Transfer case ONLY swap does not require Engine out.....
How do I support this ? My Transfer case was swapped, in an afternoon at PFAFF, large P dealer.

There is of course no mention of engine OUT on the report.

Just wanted to alert everyone. My Macan GTS has been with the Dealership since 8/27. Apparently between ordering parts, getting approvals and finding technicians who know how to install a Transfer Case, my car remains with Porsche Service. I find this highly unusual and feel a sense of need to sell my vehicle once it is returned. I was very lucky that an Indy shop found the oil leak 2 weeks before my warranty expired. Although the Transfer Case will be under a new service warranty for 7 yrs I am suspect on what the rest of the car holds in surprise maintenance costs. I checked to see about extended warranties and estimates are $6-$7K for an additional 50K miles. Not worth it as that money could be placed on a new vehicle or CPO vehicle. Wanted the thoughts, experience, of others and thought I would share my dilemma with you.

I have a newly acquired 2017 macan S. New car warranty expired end of June. With 38,000 miles, I had the full monty of a transfer case replacement, and then an oil leak in the front end, plus some minor electrical glitches involving the three, cigarette lighter power ports. Replaced fuses, etc. Took about three weeks in June. Local dealership (in Tucson, AZ) did all of the work at no charge. Delays caused by needing to get parts from Germany. I got an after market warranty from Car Shield. for up to 125,000 miles. Cost me about $4400. Was quoted as high as $7000. Shop carefully. I previously owned a 1983 911 SC and a 1988 Carrera. I love the Macan S. Worth the risk at this point. I'm keeping it. With recent cut-backs on travel, this my be my last car. I'm old.

FWIW, there is no recall for the transfer case - nor is there one for the timing chain cover.
NHTSA issues recalls for safety issues - only.

CORRECTION: The Macan has has its transfer case warranty extended to 7 years/unlimited miles
from the vehicle's in-service date.

If your Macan is still under warranty, the coverage for the transfer case has been extended.
If your warranty has already expired (as of when the extension went into effect) then you're likely
on your own.
I am not exactly sure if I understand you correctly but the transfer case warranty was extended to 7 years regardless of when the factory warranty ran out. I had mine replaced 14,000 miles after my factory warranty expired and I do not think anyone has reached 7 years of ownership yet.

How does that work?
This. Timing cover and transfer case have as much in common as bacon and eggs. Totally different animals, unrelated except for where they live.

These cars (and many other half way modern Porsches like Boxsters and Cayennes) are intended for the entire drive train (and front suspension) to drop out from underneath precisely because it makes access easier. The job of dropping the drivetrain is a standard procedure and not anywhere near as big a deal as people think. And yes, I've done the job on my Boxster.

A week? I could do it in my own garage in that amount of time. It is completely plausible that a trained Porsche mechanic with a lift and the tools on his bench can do a round trip in/out of the drivetrain in a single day. If the job of doing the timing chain cover takes a week it is because they drop the drivetrain and wait for parts from the fatherland.

And there is zero reason to drop the drivetrain for a transfer case. It's back behind the transmission and access is not bad at all.

The following is a list of replaced, per the author, transfer cases. Given that probably few owners frequent auto forums compared to the full number of owners, this warrants documentation. Please add any new replacements to the thread and I will update the first post or correct it if I got it wrong. Thanks

Non-scientific chart. Not everyone gave mileage. At least one mistake in here. Some people have had multiple transfer cases done. I doubt I caught everything and I'm sure I made mistakes. Expect this chart to not be totally accurate but its what I could figure out. Chart to be updated.

Please add me to the list. I replaced my transfer case on my 2015 Macan S in 2018 and it is starting to fail again. Porsche extended the warranty by seven years but we will still own cars with defective drivetrains and be subject to continuously be burdened by their poor engineering. Reach out if more info needed 2wiegman@gmail.com

From what I understand, you either get a good one or bad one and the bad ones normally fail before 20,000 miles. Mine failed at 19,000 miles and four months out of warranty. My local Porsche dealership replaced the transfer case under warranty and free of charge. I was hoping they would do that but I did not expect it because you know it was technically out of warranty. I dropped my macan off at 9o’clock and picked it up at 3o’clock and they gave me a turbo Panamera to drive during the day. It did take about two weeks for them to get the part in though. I have a 2016 turbo. That has been the only issue I have had with it. I now have about 28,000 miles on it. This is absolutely the best vehicle I have ever owned I still look forward to driving it.
I have a 16 Macan S. Transfer case shudder didn’t start until two weeks ago at 60k miles. It’s in the shop now for that repair. I’m happy Porsche stepped up and did the right thing by covering these repairs. Good for us.

That Riverside poster is very confused and I hope no one believes what he/she is saying. My transfer case was replaced under warranty at 19K miles. 2018 GTS. Car was dropped off for an oil leak on a Monday afternoon and car was done on Thursday afternoon. Oil leak was found coming from passenger side valve cover, not timing chain cover and transfer case was deemed to exhibit symptoms that justified replacement. Neither required engine out.

No one is confused . I have the documents posted to prove Porsche is aware of the Timing Chain and Transfer case issue. Porsche stepped up and increased the warranty to 7 yrs on the Timing Chain and paid for all work associated with this.
Porsche USA is aware as my car was in for the service for 7 weeks. German made oem parts and COVID had impacted the ability to service in a timely manner.
My point was to make others aware of my dilemma share thoughts and receive advise from the community. Cheers.

You are jumbling the two issues. Repeating it over and over doesn't make it true.

Warranty has been extended to 7 years on the TRANSFER CASE.
Nothing official has been announced for owners (at least none that I'm aware of as of today) regarding TIMING COVER leaks but dealerships are aware of it and have a procedure for what to look for and what to repair.

TRANSFER CASE does NOT require engine out. With the underbelly cover off, you can see the transfer case unit under the car and it's obvious it does not require engine removal.
TIMING COVER leaks is what requires engine removal.

The notes you got from your dealer is a service bulletin for repairing the oil leak under warranty with hand written notes saying you have an issue with transfer case and timing chain cover but the two are not mutually exclusive. They are completely unrelated components.

The gift that keeps on giving
For those who might be confused I have attached itemized repair of TC/Timing Chain and transfer case issue. PCNA and my dealership stepped up and repaired under Warranty. Next Q- Do I get extended warranty now that warranty is expired?Do I not worry about warranty, Do I keep car or trade it? :) Cheers

Riverside - You have been informed several times by forum members that the TCC (timing chain cover) issue
is not, repeat not, the same issue as the transfer case. While the TCC issues may be resolved without removing the
engine, Porsche corporate insists that an engine out procedure be used in order to provide warranty coverage.

The timing chain (and its cover) is located on the FRONT of the engine.

PLEASE stop insisting that a transfer case (on the opposite end from the TCC) replacement requires an engine
out procedure. Other forum members have repeatedly demonstrated this fact.

The transfer case is at the rear of the transmission.

You're winning no points by insisting your misunderstanding of the facts is correct. I'm reminded of the Flat Earth
people...

As for extended warranty, you should read the threads discussing the Porsche Extended Warranty (assuming you
bought the vehicle CPO) and/or your own copy of the CPO warranty and/or talk to you local dealer and/or PCNA.

Keep or trade? YOUR call. Realize you now have a new transfer case and a corrected TCC situation. Buying another
Macan may expose you to other issues. There are no guarantees in this life!

Hopefully this is now put to rest...

Good luck!

These cars (and many other half way modern Porsches like Boxsters and Cayennes) are intended for the entire drive train (and front suspension) to drop out from underneath precisely because it makes access easier.
Who told you this? Understand that‘s the case for the sports cars due to engine access issues, but have never heard the same for the Macan. In fact it looks very typical for a front engine - rear drive car.

The shop manuals. Not a new thing. My 2004 Cayenne had the engine, transmission front suspension all on a sub frame that drops out the bottom.

You can also walk into your Porsche dealer and peek into the service bays. Depending on the job being done (for example timing chain cover but not transfer case), out it comes. No big deal
