Hello,

This not really a complaint, My turbo started to shudder when I was backing up and when I put it drive it would shudder in 1st, 2nd and a little in 3rd. The car has 14k miles. I brought to the dealer and it turns out that the transfer case has gone out. The dealer was great.
We are awaiting new cv joints that Porsche recommended to be replaced also.

The car has been a great car, this is more of a heads up to all on this forum.

Transfer Case Issues

I have read a few posts regarding Transfer Case issues but they are very general. What are they?

I have a 2016 S and notice when doing a normal launch, there appears to be about 15 seconds when I hear what sounds like driving over bumps.

Could this be the Transfer Case or the Transmission?

Thoughts?

#107 ·
I had a funny, stuttering, grinding noise & feeling when I'd start from a dead stop. More a feeling than a sound. Not sure if that's what you're experiencing, but you'll want to have it checked if you have any doubt. I ended up needed a new transfer case & front drive shaft. I was off line for 7 weeks, waiting for the parts, but I'm good as new now.

#110 ·
Just curious, of those who had transfer case replaced, how many - if any - have had to have the transfer case replaced a second time? I hope very few. If not, I wonder if this will be an ongoing issue for all Macan owners.

#112 ·
Actually there have been several dozen transfer case replacements reported just by forum members here, and the number of members here are just a small percentage of all owners, and of course most of us don't have many miles on our Macans yet.

Of course it's not an epidemic, but it's certainly worth keeping an eye on because it seems to be the most widespread potentially long-term problem the owners are reporting.

The good news is that it's not that widespread, at least not yet. Hopefully it's not the type of thing where a few early problems turn out to be an indication of longevity issues with the transfer case.

But at this point it seems to be more than isolated incidents because several forum members have reported that their dealers have immediately recognized the symptoms because they have diagnosed the same problem on other units previously.

#114 ·
I realize that this forum is just a snapshot of the real world, But several dozen on this forum? Would love to see the list in one place so we can keep an eye in it.

It does seem to be something that occurs relatively early in the car's life. So I suspect if you make it to 15k miles or so without an issue, you are probably fine.

Yeah, there's at least a couple existing threads on this.

Again, other than the early leaky rear washer and exhaust pipe issues, this may be the worst "major" issue with the Macan, and since only a small % of owners are seeing it (so long as the % does not radically increase as our cars age), I don't think it's horrible news (unless you are one of the owners that needs a new transfer case). Overall it seems like the Macan is doing well in terms of frequency of needed repairs.

My 15 Turbo is giving me a thud if I accelerate hard. If I launch the car I feel it through the floorboard. I don't know if it is cardan shaft, transfer case or what but Porsche says the car is fine.......

#117 ·
Took my 16 Macan S into dealer yesterday. They and I drove it five minutes and the tech says yup, we need to replace the Transfer Case. Turn the wheel slow and it sounds like gears gringing. In addition, start off slow and it sounds like going over small bumps. Transfer Case is trying to go between two wheel drive and all wheel drive..

He told me that they have replaced at least 5 in Macans and 50 in Cayannes.

#118 ·
Hmmm, this transfer case issue is getting epidemic.

#120 ·
The failure rate may be somewhat higher than we thought. Was that at Leith? They did 5 just there? And they are not a high volume dealer at all.

#121 ·
Yes, it was at Leith. They have been great. I was concerned that my trip would be like going to the Doctor only to not have the symptom that day. Fortunately, these guys are good and verified my problem with me in the car in less than five minutes. Transfer Case coming in from Canada.

I highly recommend Leith. For months I had a squeak in the front that I could not pinpoint. Took it in and the same tech, says "that's the hood and we need to adjust the spacer" problem fixed!

#123 ·
I suppose it's both a good and bad sign that the dealers have become adept at identifying bad transfer cases. You are not the first forum member to report that their dealer immediately and correctly identified the problem.

#125 ·
Did you notice the response to the forum post link you provided? Sounds like he/she works at a dealer and has quite a bit of insight.

Anyone know how similar the transfer cases on the Cayennes are to the Macan? Are they from the same supplier?

#126 ·
The transfer case failed on our Cayenne S at 35k miles, but once replaced the new transfer case was solid for the next 40k miles that we owned it. Thankfully was under warranty, $5k if it was out of warranty. Not sure how similar the Cayenne part is to the Macan part.

#128 ·
Of course just about all of us are still under warranty, but if anyone is curious, the list price on a replacement transfer case (part number 95B 341 010) is $3829, but there are dealers offering them on the internet at a 20 to 30% discount.

Interesting that it appears all Macans use the identical unit, from base models up to the PP.

Based on parts diagrams it looks like the Cayenne (92A) transfer case is substantially different, even though the parts numbers are similar. And it also looks like appears the Cayenne uses different model transfer cases depending on the engine.

#129 ·
Yes, very interesting response at that Pelican Parts link.

If the transfer case is truly identical for all models, that's probably good for those of us with lower torque, such as the S, compared to a Turbo? It's also probably good for those of us who won't be towing at anywhere near the limit?

I wonder if this particular design doesn't even belong to Porsche? After all the Macan inherits quite a lot from Audi, I wonder if this is one of those things?

Does anyone know offhand if the Audi Q5 is also having transfer case problems?

#131 ·
The following is a list of replaced, per the author, transfer cases. Given that probably few owners frequent auto forums compared to the full number of owners, this warrants documentation. Please add any new replacements to the thread and I will update the first post or correct it if I got it wrong. Thanks

Non-scientific chart. Not everyone gave mileage. At least one mistake in here. Some people have had multiple transfer cases done. I doubt I caught everything and I'm sure I made mistakes. Expect this chart to not be totally accurate but its what I could figure out. Chart to be updated.

.. Please add any new replacements to the thread and I will update the first post ..
2015, 17k miles. Transfer case just got done by dealership. I received car from dealership a couple of days ago. Read on if you want to know why this could be my first and last service experience at this joint. I need to find good indy in my area.

I noticed that trim piece in trunk was not clipped back in, just loose and placed there. What first caught my eye was the un-evenness of the trim. Does the transfer case replacement require working in this area? I also asked that they upgrade PCM to 4.7.6. Maybe this requires work in this area? Anyway, read on for why I'm thoroughly unimpressed with the sloppy job the tech did.
 Continuing...

A rear seat passenger noticed last night she was sitting on something... it was actually the clip that covers the baby seat anchor. And another one of those clips was missing that wasn't missing before. How did that happen?? Again, just sloppy lazy job completion.

I noticed the leather steering wheel has a 1/8 in nick in the leather that wasn't there before. Like someone had something sharp in their hands. CARELESS!:mad:

And to top this off, I didn't notice till I got home but I see a 3 in ding in the body, right outside the area in the rear, inside the trunk where the trim piece wasn't secured. It looks like something was dragged across or dropped there. It's not severe but it definitely wasn't there before and it's noticeable. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over?

I'll be notifying the Service Manager tomorrow. I want to know who worked on my car, and I never want him touching it again.

In general I avoid having any work done by a dealership. Prior cars to Macan are 4 older MBs.

If I have pre-paid Porsche maintenance, I can take it to a certified independent, right??

I'm in Northern VA and will go anywhere within 30-40 mins of Dulles airport. I have a GREAT Mercedes indy who I have no problem driving 45 mins to get to, because he is THAT good. Fairly priced, and a maestro.

I guess I shouldn't be shocked but I am REALLY disappointed in my first service experience at this Porsche dealership shop.

I seem to have the same problem, or at least the symptoms are very similar, although I have not noticed any issues when reversing. When I first noticed something was not quite right was when exiting an intersection and it felt like gravel under the wheels causing a jerkiness in take off, as if the gravel was letting the wheels spin and preventing forward motion. I then noticed that at low speeds in traffic when I accelerated there would be a lumpiness, stuttering or hesitation that felt like clutch slip or a misfiring engine. This became more apparent when the engine oil was greater than 70C when it could turn into a series of shudders during acceleration. As this was felt more than heard I did wonder if it may be the unevenness and ridges in the road surface, so then tried to reproduce in a smooth road. There was no mistaking it was some kind of transmission problem and I contacted the dealership to arrange to take it in for the techs to check it out. The service guy said "it sounds like a transfer case problem" which is how I have found myself on this thread.

My 2015 Macan has not been raced or hammered, though it has seen some occasional spirited driving, but most of the time the wife is with me, so fast drives are not possible!

I am due to take it in for the guys to have a look tomorrow and will update the forum when I know more.

#136 ·
Took the Macan to the guys at Porsche Parramatta and they diagnosed the transfer case as the culprit. It was easy to demonstrate to the techs as Parramatta is 85km from home, so it was warmed up nicely and juddering like a good un. They said it could be repaired next week and would only take a day to replace so I guess there must be stock in country. They said they don't repair them here in Australia, just replace and send the old unit back to Germany. The tech I spoke to said he had replaced a few, but wasn't specific on actual numbers. Will update the forum once replacement is complete and I get to drive it again.
