What makes the Macan interior look 'cheap'?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently speccing my Macan S in Australia.

What are some standard features in the interior that make the Macan feel cheap? I personally don't like the plastic that wraps around the bottom of the front seats (where the buttons are). Thoughts? I know these can be made leather but this is $3900!!!!!

Any other parts worth upgrading to get rid of any cheap feeling?

Actually I disagree. I got the standard interior with partial leather and I find nothing cheap looking about it. All the guests in my car have gushed about the interior. What other interiors are you comparing it to?

Plastic dash and doors trim is a bit disappointing at this price range considering some other brands at least stitch these areas with "leatherette" (I'm thinking some of the merc models). Full leather interior fixes this but the Australian price is $$$ and then some!($7610.00AUD)

The lack of a vanity mirror light, is a bit cheap. You'll need to buy comfort lighting! ($720.00AUD)

Other than this I think the numerous blank/empty buttons makes the interior feel "cheap", but we all know this is done to make us purchase more options!

Macan interior does not look cheap. Not even with the 'basic' non-leather upgrade interior.

The area where you're concerned about (where the seat control panel is) is plastic, even with the $8k full leather (I'm 90% sure it is).

For me, partial leather ($4k) gives enough leather in all the right places.

BMW, Audi and Mercedes SUV's don't have leather dash or consoles at the Macan price point either.

Range Rover Evoque/Sport are the only ones that have leather everything inside if you choose the correct spec.

The two key things that were obvious oversights were the 3-zone HVAC (which was added as standard in MY16) and the comport lighting. For the MSRP increase in 2016, the comfort lighting should have been added. The lack of vanity lights and ugly yellow lighting should not even be offered IMHO. Not expensive either...

The empty buttons are a trade-off. You can't have physical buttons for all these optional features without the space for them. For me, that was a differentiator. I HATE menus for car options (i.e. BMW) when a nice button can handle it easily. For others, they don't like the blank space. There are some cool mods to fill those blank spaces on other vehicles, so maybe they will come out for the Macan too.

without comfort lighting (which is LED), there are no interior lights except the overhead console and rear passenger. In other words, no footwell, bottom of the doors and trunk lighting, all the reflectors are simply unwired. To me, that's cheap ... cheap.

I am driving a dealer loaner (today) of a 2015 base Cayenne and even this has halogen interior lights on the doors and trunk. Go figure.

The interior with the black 14 ways ,wood option, comfort lighting on my S has been complimented by everyone who sees it.

I cannot speak from ownership since I'm still waiting on the arrival my S. However, in test driving both S and Turbo models I never felt the interiors were cheap. Only thing that really felt cheap were the blinker and wiper stalks beside the steering wheel. These did feel like they were straight out of a VW Lupo or a SEAT Ibiza... Embarrassingly cheap at this price point.

I don't feel I can use the word cheap for anything in my Macan other than the already commented above blinker and wiper stalks which are just a joke in my opinion. It looks like Porsche found a bunch of them in a car dumpster. However, I can use the words "outdated" for couple details and options which I would not expect to see in a brand new model that was launched in 2015. Here is my list:
- PCM: The high resolution offered in other cars is just not there. It feels like old technology and the touchscreen is very cumbersome and not intuitive
- Rearview camera: Well, nothing more I can tell about how bad it is.
- Speedometer on the far left side of the dashboard: It just feels kind of out of place there since you have the digital speedometer in the center. It also feels dated.
- Piano black trim: I know many people like it but for me it feels like cheap plastic. I am so glad I ordered mine with CF trim

I've seen more than one complaint about these and I just don't get it.

What would you change about the blinker/wiper stalks to make them better?

I think you all need a reality check on what constitutes "cheap" in regards to a $50,000 car. Get into a Bentley or Rolls, there is plenty of switchgear that comes from their parent company parts bins that feels "cheap" considering the price of the car. As far as all of you bitching about plastic quality, all you need to do is open your checkbook and cover it all in leather, wood, whatever. Most of you a bitching about things that you had the option to upgrade so I take the position that it is the owners that are cheap.

Agreed. Porsches offers a myriad of options to "lux" out your interior. They are all under the "Interior Leather" section in the configurator. Just check all the boxes on there and your interior should be pretty baller without any "cheapo" feeling, problem solved:D

Edit: Just checked on the configurator and it'll only cost about ~$15,000. Pocket change for Porsche buyers.

Agree. And I would buy the Macan again and again if it comes coming with the same blinker stalks. I guess the point of this thread is name very few things that if Porsche dedicated more time in reading to customer's responses would make the car even more amazing. There are no huge issues with the car but small details that could be easily improved. For example, we all know the CarPlay integration is coming in the near future. That means Porsche understood that the days of PCM are over.

I guess I've never driven a car that had wiper/blinker stalks that were "works of art". They feel just fine to me. Ignorance is bliss I guess.

I think the standard interior dash top has that cheap American car dimpled look I went with the partial leather which covers the entire dash top and adds a nice stitched ledge to the front of the dash and gives it a premium look I had not intended to order this for the additional $1700 but my wife insisted after seeing it in the turbo on the showroom floor and I'm really happy I spent the money because the dash top is one of those things that's right in your face 100% of the time.

When I put my windshield wipers on they go on when I put my turn signals on they go on and as long as the stalks don't fall off in my hand I'm good but hey that's just how I roll :)

@Tayden10 @ceedee @santastico You guys talking about weak stalks reminds me of a friend with a "Road Rage" issue one time. He was cut off multiple time by a car who kept switching lanes with no signal. He was riding his Yamaha R1. He finally was able to pull up next to the driver, reached in, broke off the signal stalk, yelled "You're not using this anyway, so you don't need it", and rode off...

I don't know 100% if it's true, but he swore it was. To my mind, even if he broke the plastic, the wires would make it difficult to pull off. He did offer to "demonstrate" on one of our cars, but nobody took him up on it.

Kinda getting OT but after this thread I went to my car and looked at the stalks closely and felt how the operate. Having examined more closely, it does seem like there is a quality feel there - I can't really fault any particular aspect. Possibly they are less chunky than you would get on a BMW for example, which might make them seem flimsy? But they don't flex and the mechanism is nice and fluid with good feedback.

(taking the troll bait) I like judging interiors at their core. The bare plastics, etc. Anything can be leather wrapped (that offer it) and even then, someone like myself with almost too detailed for my own good senses, can sense the underlying quality.

In that respect, I find the Macan's interior to be of utmost quality. Feeling, touching, looking at various plastics, in even detailed areas, show a higher regard for quality than any similarly price BMW's, MB's or Audi's (not counting upcoming Q5 as I haven't seen that yet). It's better than my E Class and even probably slightly better than my 5 Series, and the latter I find to have on of my favorite interiors. The switches, buttons, etc. I find to tell a purposeful story of being noticeably more strong and refined in most areas than said M-B's and BMW as well.

And my interior is completely bare spec. I like the strong and tactile quality the various elements of it exude. With leather wrapped surfaces it only looks and feels richer.

The true essence of the Macan interior is minimalism and simple, understated, functional, serious (Germanic) quality. It's not mean to dazzle you with techno gimmicks (the opposite). Just meant to be a luxurious (in the following explained ways), functioning, sporty and teutonically high quality environment with a calming sense of nothing superfluous and everything smartly where it should be, a'la classic P charm yet modernized appropriately. Which is Porsche's entire M.O. It'll age very well.

I've driven or been driven in a few fancy and pricy cars.

I find the Macan quality to be super. Even like the quality finish on the control stocks! Quality matte finish, clear text and no molding marks. And the holes to the steering column are perfectly sealed. Nice to avoid wrought iron and shinny cheap plastic.

I had to go to my garage to check I wasn't imagining things - no -nice switches too.
