Hello,

This not really a complaint, My turbo started to shudder when I was backing up and when I put it drive it would shudder in 1st, 2nd and a little in 3rd. The car has 14k miles. I brought to the dealer and it turns out that the transfer case has gone out. The dealer was great.
We are awaiting new cv joints that Porsche recommended to be replaced also.

The car has been a great car, this is more of a heads up to all on this forum.

That sounds like the "Ackermann effect" to me. I have a '16 Turbo that's being doing that on occasion since it was new. And that's exactly when it tends to happen...cold weather, summer tires, backing up with wheels turned. Curious what your dealer says.

Nearly all the time it's when I'm reversing. Rarely when going forward, and like you, not as pronounced.

How many miles you got on your macan Shark ?

My official answer from Porsche is that this thing is normal with summer tires.
I have few other 4 wheel drive cars, none which do this thing on summer tires in cold weather.

I will just drive it as it is since I got 3 more years of transfer case warranty.
Then ask for a replacement when it gets worse.

print out that warranty extension and leave it in your glove box.

Summer tires do weird stuff, especially on the Macan. I can feel a lot of things that I never felt before in my other cars on summer tires. Granted the Macan is my first Porsche, it still takes some time to get used to.

The other day I was driving along a familiar road and felt lots of different tire/drivetrain noises that weren't there before. My wife said it was because I drove slowly that day due to 2 bikes in the trunk. I doubted it. But later I drove again on that road without the bikes and it all came out normal. I didn't realize speed alone could have made that big a difference.

Double trouble: went in for 70k service and had oil all over engine. Had timing case cover and transfer case replaced this week. 2017 Macan S; 69,000miles. TCC good willed; TC under extended warranty.
Picking up tomorrow.
How long did the work take?

I think PCNA paid 100% for his Timing Cover, engine out repair, with his car out of warranty (Good Will)

As they should for every Macan owner with this known issue.

Just like the TC issue.

TCC = Timing Chain Cover

TC = Transfer Case

There is no timing cover. What is a "timing", anyway?

Adding to the confusion are posts mixing both issues in the same thread!

Are forum members, in general, unfamiliar with what a timing chain is and how it works?
How about timing belt - a lower cost and quieter alternative, requiring periodic replacement?

Thanks for the clarification. I meant the TCC repair should be covered by Porsche even out of warranty just like the TC repair. LOL

Hopefully, Porsche will step up on the TCC (Timing chain cover) leak as they did on the TC (Transfer case) issue.

@grim -- Would you be willing to update me on the list of transfer case replacements? I'm getting my second replacement done today (previous replacement was early 2017).

It took a while for the symptoms show up on one of the rare occasions when a tech was behind the wheel, but it finally happened today, and the dealership has a new transfer case in stock, so -- yeah. Might as well get it done.

FWIW, the symptoms this time around were more gradual in their onset and more subtle in their presentation as compared to the original 2015 TC. This time, it was a hesitation while shifting more so than a jerk or a grinding, and much harder to replicate with the Off Road > Full Lock > Reverse in a Circle dance (or whatever it was that a lot of us were doing four years ago).

Still love this car, and the repair is covered by Porsche, so no complaints. The Macan remains a joy to drive, especially on the long road trips I dream of resuming once the pandemic is under better control. We've done Lake Michigan to the Pacific Ocean four times now, plus Mexico to Canada, and with lots of twisty roads in the east calling our name for future exploration once travel is safe enough.

Maybe this transfer case will last? After the joyful surprise of winning a regional TrackSprint season championship in 2019 with the Macan, I figure the SUV earned a comfortable retirement from competition. The 2020 season saw another jacket in a different class, this time in a two-door with more camber adjustments and cheaper consumables, but MAN, I sure do miss the Macan's creature comforts on the way to and from events.

I thought Porsche had made some changes/improvements to the transfer case to fix this issue?

Does the replacement TC have a different part# vs. the original P#?

#874 ·
Anyone knows the new part# for the revised breather? One should be able to order it from the dealer and install it when changing the TC fluid.

I was told by my dealership in Atlanta that yes it is ok to drive it, but use common sense. For example it may not be smart to do any launch control take offs, or towing. My turbo ( 2015 with 56 K miles) is at the service center now for a replacement. They did have to order some parts so it has been there approx 2 weeks. I have a 2020 base Macan as a loaner and it is better than I thought it would be. I did not like the communication center as much as the 2015...for me it is too distracting as it has too many features and the large screen means you have to reach further. I do like the led lights for the color change and aesthetics’ And the 4 cyl does have more usable power than I thought it would around town...on the interstate I do miss my turbo.
I do wonder what it is inside the transfer case that is failing?

So took my Macan in to my preferred Indy shop because of a chirping noise almost like a belt chirp at slow accell and decel/braking under 2k rpm. He couldn't isolate the noise but we both agree it's coming from the front right side, what he did notice was a little vibration from the transfer case (I've noticed it before too but wasn't sure) and recommended I have a Porsche dealer take a look at it. My question is could the chirping be caused by transfer case?

Unfortunately, you don't state the year of your Macan nor the number of miles on it.

Are you aware there are already at least 10 threads on the issue?

Be sure to visit the following link and read its content:

I am merging this thread with the 23 page, 460 post thread on the topic.

Without driving your Macan in person, it is next to impossible for forum members to diagnose the issue
you are having with your Macan.

Good luck getting it resolved!
