Hello,

This not really a complaint, My turbo started to shudder when I was backing up and when I put it drive it would shudder in 1st, 2nd and a little in 3rd. The car has 14k miles. I brought to the dealer and it turns out that the transfer case has gone out. The dealer was great.
We are awaiting new cv joints that Porsche recommended to be replaced also.

The car has been a great car, this is more of a heads up to all on this forum.

I also had my transfer case replaced last August 2019 (54K miles) on my 2015 S CPO, I purchase in May 2015 with 2300 miles on it. The problem existed since I purchased the car. It took until last August to get a Service Tech to test drive and they finally confirmed. CPO will be expiring in May 2020 so very happy. Since the replacement the car is running smooth. Had the vibration acceleration around 25-30 miles was not all the time. Should have been a recall because they can disconnect and test.

What did your dealer say when you had the replacement for the 2nd one?
Did they say the case itself was defective? Or did something cause the replacement case to fail?

I assume you were surprised when the 1st replacement case failed & even though it was covered under warranty, it took up your time so you wanted to know why.

I have not had a TC failure & I want to know why yours has failed 3 times.

It has failed twice. The third case will be installed this week. The first time was at 11K miles this second at 60K miles. We were told at 11K that the case was defective. I gather that there are different models of this case, two at least and that the later is apparently more reliable than the first. Such being the situation, and that my first replacement was in 2016, my guess is that the replacement was with the same model that failed in the first place. In any event, this is my last Porsche product. Should have stuck with Lexus. If you own one count on it. One day and at any mileage, it will just start to happen.

OK
Your 2nd TC (1st replacement under warranty) was the original defective part #. Now, after warranty, it has again failed. There is a new replacement TC model with a new model #, correct?

You have a good argument for PCNA that they used a known defective part to replace your TC under warranty & PCNA KNOWS this since they have a new, improved TC with a new part # that they use on all TC replacements currently.

PCNA should replace your TC @ N/C to you with the new improved part.

After they do this, you can sell your Porsche & buy Lexus or whatever you wish that will, I am certain, have absolutely 0 issues.

;)

In the last 12 years my family went through 4 Lexuses, we still own 2. My Macan S is my first Porsche. If cars were like women I would compare Porsche to a gorgeous sexy blond you wanna hang out with. Your friends envy you and she is a lot of fun.

But as you start thinking about marriage and starting a family, you understand that you want to end up with Lexus. Not as pretty, a little less sexy, but far more reliable and not nearly as high maintenance as the former.

Had my transfer case replaced by local Porsche dealer. 2016 Macan S with approximately 25,800 miles. I knew something was wrong with how it was driving, just not how wrong until I picked it up and drove off! What a difference. Smooth precise shifts make it a pleasure to drive again.
I give both Hoehn Porsche in Carlsbad, CA and Porsche a lot of credit for stepping up and doing the work under warranty even though the vehicle was out of warranty!!! Turnaround was quick once Porsche signed off on warranty repair. Happy Macan owner again.

I brought my 2016 Macan S to dealer when under warranty asking about the little discontinuous acceleration in lower gears in 2018. They told me that it was normal at that time. Now i am experiencing some more noticeable vibrations when accelerating in 1,2,3 gears. Some people on asian forum think that it could be differential problem. The way to test it is full right turn with off load mode when idling. If vibrations kick in, the differential is the issue.

Has anyone else experienced the same thing? I worry that my problem may develop further in the future causing differential failure or something. Should i talk to the dealer and ask for a diagnosis? Since i brought it up during the warranty, is it possible that they will fix it for free?

Thank you so much

You may want to read through some of the threads about transfer case issues. If that's what it is, there's a good chance Porsche will cover most or all the replacement cost as good will.

Tranfer case

Transfer Cases

Add me to this list 2017 Macan S about 15,800 miles. Transfer Case is being replaced as we speak. It should be done hopefully by early next week. I had a rattling noise when reversing since I purchased the vehicle. I didn't know this was not normal until I saw a friend's base Macan (2018) and it doesn't make a rattling noise when reversing. I noticed that in the lower gears 1-3 there was a lot of lag and sputtering when shifting. Also, I could feel the transfer case shifting back and forth when in sport or sport plus mode, almost like a pendulum.

I asked them to check on the transfer case while test driving the car after the the TCC repair. I have no idea if they did or didn't. They said car is operating normally.
If Sunset said, "the car is operating normally" after having been requested to "check on the transfer case", it sounds
as though they did perform the check.

If you have any question whether they did, or not, you would be advised to specifically ask whether they did perform the
TC check for you.

Then, you would have "an idea".

You need documentation and assurance. It cannot be a guessing game...

Test it yourself. This process is from an earlier post in this thread and I did it to diagnose my transfer case which was replaced. Porsche accepted that test over the phone and arranged the replacement no questions asked:

"Turn the car on, turn OFF-ROAD on, reverse slowly with steering wheel fully turned one way. Then go forward with the steering wheel fully turned the other way. Repeat a couple of times. OFF-ROAD switch on magnifies the clunking, grabbing etc. like 10X".

Note also that there are a number of reports from owners (mainly UK) that have had the replacement of further failures!

Hello-
Been looking here for a while and considering an S.
All the information I have about the Macan I learned here.
Visited my brother in Houston, he has a 17 turbo - I really liked the car.
Is the transfer case issue limited to particular model years.
I'm considering 17-19 model years, but I'm on the fence about the non-Porsche
sourced engine on the 19 (indicated on this board) and also on the fence about the 19 tail light.
Considering brand new to an extent but not sure I want to spent north of 60K.
I would like full leather seats, sunroof and would also like 20 or 21 inch wheels.

Thanks

I will be changing the TC fluid when I reach 30K. Strickly preventative maintenance.

#704 ·
I just replaced my TC fluid at 30K on the dot. I also replaced the rubber bleeder valve (part #958-341-393-00) that is causing the TC's to fail in the first place. I bought a handful of those at the dealer for about $7 each. I plan to replace the TC fluid, drain plugs and bleeder valve every 20K miles going forward. Cheap insurance... and I enjoy tinkering.

Good morning everyone. We have a 2015 turbo here with just over 25k miles that just started the slight shudder on 1-2 shift and 2-3 shifts (mainly when cold). Once warm no more shudder, but still have the "bump" feeling just before 2k rpms in 2nd and 3rd gear under light acceleration.

Will be doing a drain/fill procedure tomorrow using Ravenol tf-0870. Also adding a differential vent relocation to the engine bay.
Still cant believe they haven't corrected this water contamination issue since the 2008+ cayenne.

Still have a bottle of redline 80301 Limited slip friction modifier on the shelf if needed for the clutches.

PSA: Friend at my work, who owns a transmission and engine rebuild shop, was telling me that when water invades a differential you get 2 side effects.
Rust on your steel parts (causes the shuddering/chattering feeling), and it also eats at the glue bonding your clutches to their backing plates.
This would be why some have pulled the pieces of clutch material out of their drain holes.

Drain/fill went great overall.
Shudder on initial takeoff in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd if gone.
Slipping (bump in the road feeling) at 2k is gone now too.
No redline additive was used either.

Fitted the t/c nipple with a 5 ft. Section of 3/8 rubber hose and a traditional differential vent valve I picked up from local parts store (these have been used for decades, and work great at venting heat/vapors out of the case).

I routed it on top of the transmission up under the engine cover and secured it there.
  • Will be able to fill from here in the future.
