Replacing & Registering the Battery

Hopefully I will not need to do this for 3-4 years but I’m curious. Manual p. 314 says only have done by Porsche dealer & you cannot tell what type of (aftermarket) battery will replace the genuine Porsche battery by the markings on the battery. WTF?!

I like Interstate brand. Often better quality than OEM but, that is for lead acid, not sure for AGM.

So, has anyone here had to replace their battery & did you have Porsche do it & what did it cost you?

I finally took a look at my battery which is under the trunk floor in front of the Bose SubW (After lift the cargo floor, must lift carpet & then lift another cover to view & if need to access/change it--would need to remove collapsible spare tire!)

I see mine is 92Ah.

I searched & found Gaudin Porsche offers two; a 92Ah & a more powerful 105 Ah.

958-611-105-21
BATTERY 105 AMP HOUR MSRP $543.76, online price $351.05
Replaces:958-611-105-20

958-611-092-21
BATTERY 92 AMP HOUR MSRP $439.44, online price $283.70
Replaces: 7PP-915-105, 955-611-085-00, 955-611-092-00, 958-611-092-20

So, if you wanted the same battery you have now you’d get the 92Ah for $283.70.
My guess is that to have Porsche replace it for you you’d pay MSRP $439.44 + ½ hr. Labor! ~$500 to replace a @#$!!** battery?!

For Lead Acid batteries, you just need the dimensions to fit the space & the correct Ah & then it is reliability, price, warranty & specs such as CCA. How can it be that much different for AGM types? If, for example, Interstate made one to fit Macan that was the same size with more Ah for ~ $150 it would be tempting. For now, until I learn that aftermarket brands are available & work well, I’d probably upgrade to the genuine Porsche 105 AH & DIY.

Once we have a reasonably priced tool to register replacement batteries, here's another source for the battery itself:

I'm convinced we will soon see the Icarsoft, Foxwell, lower priced Autel, or something similar have the battery registration capability.

Hey All,

My 2017 S started to show some signs of a weak battery after 3.5 years. Even though I used to change batteries in my previous cars, after reading some threads here and on Rennlist, I decided not to deal with the process myself. It seems like a hassle to get the right model and get it registered in ECU. But the dealer closer to my home provide a quote of $885 total, which doesn't sound right to me. This dealer is owned by Autonation. Strangely even though they're not specialized in luxury brands, their quote seems always higher than the other 2 Porsche dealers in my area that owned by a group only sells luxury & ultra-luxury brands. I'll try to call the other 2 dealers later. But I wanted to know what a reasonable price would be to get this done? Thanks!

#289 ·
A 'reasonable' price would be a hundred and fifty bucks maximum. What you are facing is what Autonation thinks is 'reasonable'. Face it, this forum ought to find a decent registration tool and we will all kick in some money to buy it and pass it around. Then we can go out and buy a proper battery and register it ourselves. $885 for a mundane dealer installed battery is a rip off.

Looks like it cost $789.00

Expensive but may be worth it.

If you can use to replace a battery for $200 instead of $700 & DIY oil change a couple of times...that alone may pay for it. Future oil changes & other uses are extra $$$ in your pocket.

As usual, caveat emptor...

...and, who the heck knows who the poster really is over in the other forum. He could be someone
who markets or is otherwise associated with manufacturing/selling/etc. these units to people. The
poster may not even be using the device, simply making screenshot and posting them to a forum
likely to generate sales.

Nice find! As you can see in the comments section of the video I've asked them to confirm this will work on a Macan.

At 7:45 in this video
it does seem to show this works with Porsche. Looks like it also works with the parking brake service too.

My bad everyone. I have the md808 and thought everyone knew it did battery, oil, intermediate service reset, e-brake and more. It’s a slow processor for data log display but I don’t really care about that. Everything else is real and it works well. I picked it up for 167 at that online river store, so keep an eye out for the price fluctuations.

Let me know if you need a picture or test of something.

Now, my big question is if we can use a battery number from new macan to reset the system with the interstate battery or one like it...assuming the battery doesn’t have one on it.

So Amazon sellers have the MD808 Pro "from" $245 & there is a note:
"There is a newer model of this item"

Link to:
Autel MP808 OBD2 Scanner Professional OE-Level Diagnostics with Bi-Directional Control, Active Tests, Key Programming, SAS, EPB, BMS, DPF, Oil, TPMS Reset, ABS Bleeding

$749.00
Quite a big price difference.

Is the $249 price on the older model bc it is discontinued?

Not sure how accurate the Amazon comment about the newer model is.

The MK series is an totally different line of diagnostic tools that have Bi-Directional Control, and the MD series does not have this advanced feature.

Difficult to imagine Autel would discontinue the MD808 without replacing it with something at least as capable. And if you look at the long term history of diagnostic tools, like with most tech each successive generation is less expensive and more capable.

If I needed a battery replacement today I would just get a correctly sized AGM battery (available for under $200 from numerous stores including Autozone, Advanced Auto, Costco, Walmart, Sam's, BJ's) and either buy an MD808 or just have my indy code the new battery. He did it on my X5 for $50, and it appears the process for the Macan is similar if not more or less identical. And I would buy one of the tools that allows you to keep power to the memory in the car while the battery is disconnected.

I'll likely buy an MD808 or similar given that we now have 3 vehicles that need their batteries coded when being replaced.

Thought it was interesting one of the videos mentioned it’s now common for AGM batteries charged using battery management software (like what we have on our Macans) to last 8 or 9 years.

#319 ·
@iconoclast the MD808 shows on the Autel web site as a currently available product. Not sure why Amazon would state there is a newer model. As far as maintaining voltage on the car while doing a battery change out I use my tender set at supply voltage when I disconnected my battery in the past.

@Wolverine +1 on grim reply. I guess I should have put the model number but I use the Ctek unit as well No battery required to provide voltage.

I have an iCarsoft POR V2.0 that I have used for diagnostic purposes as well as performing service resets following oil changes. Although I'm not in a position to need a battery registration I explored the BMS section and find it looks like the battery registration is available for our Macans. I have a 2017 S and have attached a couple of screen shots to show what I have seen. (ensure you're at the latest software level)

Great pictures, thank you. An Interstate battery from Costco, size H8 for our cars IIRC, doesn't have a serial number, does it? If the software requires a serial number, what would you put in? This question has already been pondered, changing one digit off the original Varta battery number, but has someone successfully done it? Also does the software include an option for Interstate brand?
Does the Autel MD808 require the same information, brand, size, and serial number?
And my two cents regarding maintaining power to the car while changing the battery.... the service manager at my dealership recommended using jumper cables from another car to assure you have good voltage. He told me to stay away from using a battery charger.

I can add that I updated the software on my iCarsoft POR II yesterday.

Remove micro SD, etc, PIA.....
On reboot, It does not have the Battery maintenance option on the screen.....at least while not connected to the Macan.....I would not expect any change though connected
, it seems it is a feature of the V2.O unit ONLY.

Will the Icarsoft also do Battery registration on BMW's? Besides the Macan I also have two BMW's that require battery registration when the batteries are being replaced. I'm thinking perhaps the Autel might be a better choice for me as it will do both brands?

The iCarsoft POR V2.0 is for Porsche only. iCarsoft does sell devices for other brand of cars. Not sure if they have anything that works on Porsche and other brands. Best to check their web site to see what they offer.
