Trim:
S
Year:
2015-16
This is my latest experiment…. This one will be uninstalled and returned as I got another one that seems to have better integration and much cleaner look with better trim details…. I was able to secure digital quality audio end to end and the sound is as good as PCM3.1 digital. No loss of audio quality…

Trims are not all the way in, as I’m going to be swapping all this next week, but I wrapped one of them in brushed aluminum to match the rest of my trims which were already wrapped.

Overall impressions are good. I lost intersection light (which I was expecting and not a big deal), and map/audio screens in MFD which I just unselected and now they don’t even show up (I never used that). Other than that, good integration.

Steering wheel controls worked with android radio, but only volume, mute and “call hang up” works for CarPlay, which is the exact same behavior of OEM CarPlay in my 718.

I’m pleasantly surprised at how good this looks in person.

Installation and details video coming soon in my channel (https://youtube.com/@porscheDIY?sub_confirmation=1), after I receive the other unit.

If you have seen my videos on PCM3.1 CarPlay upgrade, you know that I started with Joye CP module, then moved to Isudar, then to Mr12Volt. Mr12Volt audio quality and connection reliability were the best, but fall short with video quality. This is yet the latest adventure with my head unit.

Did anyone ever find an matte/anti-glare screen protector that fits?

My TOSLINK to MOST converter is on the way and then I'll be ready to install. The currently available version from Aliexpress is 8-pin with a metal case FWIW. Hopefully the pinout matches up.

Anyone else using themes?

From this menu:

And a stupid question by me...do I need to factory reset to go back to stock? I don't think I will do it because I like the ability to customize the buttons on Theme40, but wasn't sure if there was some other non-obvious way...

@drawz are you familiar with this theme system from the XDA forums? Do you know where I can locate others or at least understand if I can modify these? Theme 40 I can't get anything to appear in the middle frame or change what's in the top 3 windows...can't even change km/h to mi/h..

No haven't looked into theming at all and I'm mostly interested in Carplay. Still need to install mine actually. The TOSLINK to MOST box finally came in, so now I just need a little free time.

I hear ya. I originally was going to just use Android auto, but ran into a few problems that impacted me:
1) Couldn't stream YouTube TV..
2) Couldn't stream Youtube

Why would I want to? Well my wife may want to watch while I drive, but more importantly for me was the ability to hear sports games from our local channels / feeds / network when traveling. I have a VPN set up on the radio to connect back to my house so all my streams look "local" to the bay area allowing me to hear them when we're traveling on the road. I hate trying to find games when they are not broadcasted nationally..or more importantly for us, we like to hear our local radio or tv personalities.. I couldn't do it with android auto.. but figured out I can do it with the native radio...

in any case, that's why I was looking into a better interface..

Maybe the Android Auto limitations I have don't occur with Carplay (assuming they impact you at all)..

I'm sure my usage is an edge case.

Is that through Android Auto? I'll check mine later today, but I don't recall seeing any quality issues with ANdroid. However, I usually don't use the satellite view when I'm in maps. I've been using the native google maps on the headunit mostly as well, but I'll check what it looks like in my Android Auto.

Hey guys, I just got one of these headunits.

Hooked it ip but for some reason the touchscreen is not working. The buttons under the screen "HOME" "NAVI" and "PHONE" work but the main screen is not able to be operated.

The unit turns on and I can see the interface and everything however I can't press anything on the screen.

Have I hooked this up incorrectly or is this a defective screen? I have already contacted the aliexpress supplier and am waiting for their reply but just seeing if anyone else has had the same issue.

I managed to get this working. If anyone has the issue in the future, you just need to connect the touchscreen panel to the main board first before connecting it to the porsche quad connector.

If you connect the quad connector to the main board first (like I did) and then the screen to the mainboard, the screen is not recognised. I did this order as I wanted to connect the main board then mount the board then connect and mount the screen after. It is a bit more tricky to do it all at once (connecting the screen and board together and mounting it all at once).

Bit fidgety but had to work through it with the vendor.

I am not aware of any way to disable the touchscreen. Sounds like you are all connected. Have a picture ? Did you contact the vendor........I hope its not
DAINAV......
Thanks. Yeah can see all different screens. Can change modes with the joker button on the steering wheel.

Just nothing on the touch screen working.

Waiting to hear back from vendor.

This is the one I bought. Not sure which brand ?

Just found this amazing item on AliExpress. Check it out!

Probably a loose connection. In the link you provided, they show pictures where the screen is separate from the main board with a cable connecting the two. That is similar to the first model @Santirx installed. That cable could be loose or something inside the screen module. If your unit is like the second model Santirx installed (Dainav) with an integrated screen and main board, the screen ribbon cables are all internal but still could be loose. These are fairly easy to take apart if you don’t want to deal with the vendor to resolve this.

I am planning to de-pin and transfer wires from the included MOST box 8 pin Molex connector to the TOSLINK 6-pin Molex connector. Ordered this tool to help with that. This will save a small amount of space from a solder joint or splice connector.

Of course, this led my down a rabbit hole where I decided to de-pin and remove the wiring for all the unused connectors in an effort to minimize the amount of crap that needs to be jammed behind the unit. I then discovered that the 20 pin connector with all the audio/video in/out cables is a standard used on most Android radios. This whole cable can be omitted if you are using a TOSLINK to MOST adapter and don't need the Aux In, Mic in, or amp trigger.

This is only relevant because that then led me to find some information about separate front and rear RCA outputs, which is of course the first thing needed to get the fader working. It would still need a 4 channel RCA to MOST solution for Bose systems, but I haven't come across one. I'm just throwing it out there in case anyone manages to track such a beast down. It would also work if you have an aftermarket amp with 4 channel RCA inputs.

Oh and my mic popped out again just sitting in the box. Definitely getting hot glued before install.

And maybe one day I'll finally get this thing installed...

Finally got my unit installed! I ended up putting the quad lock and MOST converter behind the vent elbows, which I think freed up a bit of space. Also did not bother with the 20-pin connector to save space. No idea how you get all this back there any other way. So far, the kids are thrilled that they can see the map on the big screen and constantly ask to hear their favorite songs.

@Rossy - glad you got it all working. I was thinking you could probably install the base unit and screen in any order you want, then pull the radio fuse to force it to power up with the touchscreen attached. In case you run into it again. But I also have a question for you - does your steering wheel diamond button (aka joker button) always skip to the next input and/or can it be programmed? The Dainav unit always skips to the next input and can't be programmed, which has been a sore spot here. Curious if this newer model is any different.
