Trim:

Year:
2015-16
This is my latest experiment…. This one will be uninstalled and returned as I got another one that seems to have better integration and much cleaner look with better trim details…. I was able to secure digital quality audio end to end and the sound is as good as PCM3.1 digital. No loss of audio quality…

Trims are not all the way in, as I’m going to be swapping all this next week, but I wrapped one of them in brushed aluminum to match the rest of my trims which were already wrapped.

Overall impressions are good. I lost intersection light (which I was expecting and not a big deal), and map/audio screens in MFD which I just unselected and now they don’t even show up (I never used that). Other than that, good integration.

Steering wheel controls worked with android radio, but only volume, mute and “call hang up” works for CarPlay, which is the exact same behavior of OEM CarPlay in my 718.

I’m pleasantly surprised at how good this looks in person.

Installation and details video coming soon in my channel (https://youtube.com/@porscheDIY?sub_confirmation=1), after I receive the other unit.

If you have seen my videos on PCM3.1 CarPlay upgrade, you know that I started with Joye CP module, then moved to Isudar, then to Mr12Volt. Mr12Volt audio quality and connection reliability were the best, but fall short with video quality. This is yet the latest adventure with my head unit.

I think this option is better:

+ Built-in 4G LTE Sim card slot, DSP, Works DAB+, OBD2

@Santirx -- how do you like the unit you are using since you've had more time to play with it? Anything stand out as something you didn't realize you missed when you did the review? Or something that maybe doesn't work as good as you originally thought it did? I'm still thinking of going that route, but not encouraged by the 0 communication from the vendor when I asked some questions. I've tried following up with them twice over several weeks. That's quite a different experience from what you documented as them being very responsive. Perhaps I am looking at a different vendor from who you used?

These were the folks I looked at: 979.65US $ 30% OFF|12.3 Inch Car Radio For Porsche Macan 2013-2017 Android Auto Multimedia Player Gps Navigation Wifi Carplay Head Unit - Car Multimedia Player - AliExpress

All is going well for how I use the unit. I’ll do a long term review video at some point, but there are some annoyances that I believe I discussed in my review video. A few issues with new unit are, for example, I the OEM GPS antenna would not work with the adapter… so I had to install the provided GOS antenna which is spotty. Audio is very good after I installed the Toslink board…. Everything still fine.

I followed OP's video and installed the same unit. One thing learned: if you don't have Bose/aftermarket audio, make sure to connect the 'amp control' wire in the main plug to the corresponding wire in the audio plug (next to the RCA 'out' ones). Otherwise there won't be any sound. It looks like the car's amp needs the signal from the head unit to turn on. (Also make sure 'Amp On' is enabled in Settings).

One question: @Santirx the diamond/customizable button on the steering wheel still works for the function I set in MFD (in my case toggle Sport mode), but it simultaneously triggers some action on the head unit (which appears to be switching audio source between music, radio, and something else). Do you happen to know how to have the head unit ignore the button press? I tried the 'Control' app but couldn't figure out.

Looks like there's some experience with these smaller Android head units over here:

I'm not sure if I want to deal with finding & applying vinyl wrap to match my existing wood trim. Unless somebody already knows a source...

Looks like the feedback at Planet9 on the Erisin/Belsee unit is not so great. Gain is too high requiring attenuators and some background static. The one I linked earlier appears to be quite similar to the one 2nd unit Santirx installed, only with an 8.4" screen and half the price. Compared to the PCM, it's higher resolution, bigger (8.4 vs 7 inches), and capacitive touch (which is better for multitouch and swiping vs resistive used on PCM). Decisions decisions....

I’ve watched the review videos and think the unit looks great. I’m at the point of debating an updated board, etc to enable CarPlay in the PCM 3.1 and one of these. Does this unit have the same dimensions as the latest gen 2/3 Macan or is it slightly larger? Reason I’m asking this, is that I have the OE carbon inlay trim which is difficult to match with an aftermarket equivalent due to the smaller weave Porsche tend to use. I wondered if the unit is the same size as the latest OE unit, it might be an option to order the latest OE inlay trim on the passenger side dash and everything will match.

It seems that units discussed here are all FYT UIS7862 based Android devices. If so, there's an active XDA community around these devices here. Maybe you can get some help there with some of the issues you had with customization. I also came across a link to this app on Rennlist that might give you more control over steering wheel and hardware buttons.

I purchased this model but as I mounted it I realized that the connectors (internal to the quadlock) are not suitable because I have PCM 4.0. How can I solve it in your opinion?

Are you able to post a screenshot from the system info screen? Including the CPU and MCU info?
Also, do you have any more info about the rear camera upgrade that you mentioned in the 2nd video? Is this an AHD camera? Were you able to use stock wiring?

#155 ·
I’ll get you the photo soon.

As far as camera upgrade, I just went from my old generation camera to a newer generation (same wiring and connections, just newer). I had to code it using PIWIS and the image is improved 1000% from what I had (it went from fuzziness to very well defined image). I’m preparing a video on this, but since I haven’t calibrated the camera yet, I’m just waiting to do that. Not sure if the calibration will actually do anything as the camera, once I coded it, is working perfectly… hence why I’m taking my time.

That sounds great. Was it from a later year Macan? Do you happen to have the part number? It might even work on the stock PCM 3.1 in that case.

Thank you for your willingness to provide the screen shots as well.

Keep in mind that I have aftermarket amplifier with different means of connection. With the Android unit direct toslink output, it is basically the same audio quality as Mr12Volt. With a Bose system, you will either need a Toslink to MOST25 converter or a quality RCA to MOST25 converter. Before installing the Toslink adapter in my unit, the audio with a high quality RCA to MOST25 converter which I bought separate from the unit, was very comparable to Mr12Volt, also virtually the same. But with the RCA to MOST25 converter provided with the unit, it was not good.

I explain all that in the video.

Is never going to be the same as original, but is good enough. Watch my video on the second unit (DaiNav). I intercepted the air duct at the rear and they come down with bigger ducts. Vents are large too. As I said, good enough.

@Santirx Thank you for the additional pics.
Wow that backup camera upgrade is dramatic! Will definitely have to do that one. Too bad that wasn't known when I had the bumper off for my tow hitch...
Also, the screenshots show that this is an FYT based system. From what I can tell, there are a handful of platforms available for these Android head units, one of which is FYT and that is quite popular. There is a whole XDA community for these with some potential for custom firmware and other mods. The CPU is also a Unisoc UIS7862, which is probably the best currently available in any of these head units.

You lost me there with Android and FYT… not my expertise… 😊…. I’ll have to follow your lead on this one, on whatever you find. I’ll check XDA to see if I can learn anything on this.
There is one thread that immediately caught my attention. Steering wheel button mapping. Do you think it would be possible to remap steering wheel controls and actually make them work? In example, remapping the diamond button to skip songs?

The native steering control app in the system would not remap the controls. They seem to be hard coded.
The information out there is all somewhat cryptic, but I believe FYT is a manufacturer of mainboards for these head units. There are a few others, but FYT seems to be popular and well supported in the modding community. They offer different CPUs, radio tuners, amps, DSPs, etc. It seems that these mainboards are then assembled with model-specific screens/frames, often made by other companies. Same goes for the wiring harnesses, CANBUS decoders, MOST converters, etc., which is why none of this stuff is really fully integrated. The 8.4" model I originally linked to appears to have the same hardware and software as your 12.3" model (with the exception of the screen/vents of course).

With regard to the steering controls, there is this app made specifically for FYT units that should allow you to reprogram the steering wheel buttons (EDIT sorry this is for reprogramming the buttons on the unit). I am no expert, but there is a user on Rennlist MattDevoCustoms that has made a custom firmware for FYT models used in some of the 987/997 Android head units. I bet he could help you figure it out or you could try XDA forums. I sent him a PM about these units and he thought his firmware would work on it as well.

Fantastic, thank you sir
I have the Helix V Twelve. That small box (Helix SDMI25) on top in the photo used to convert my Most25 to TOSLINK when I had PCM3.1 with Mr12Volt. Now I’m bypassing that box. That saves you about $500 which is the cost of the SDMI25 box.
