Trim:
S
Year:
2015-16
This is my latest experiment…. This one will be uninstalled and returned as I got another one that seems to have better integration and much cleaner look with better trim details…. I was able to secure digital quality audio end to end and the sound is as good as PCM3.1 digital. No loss of audio quality…

Trims are not all the way in, as I’m going to be swapping all this next week, but I wrapped one of them in brushed aluminum to match the rest of my trims which were already wrapped.

Overall impressions are good. I lost intersection light (which I was expecting and not a big deal), and map/audio screens in MFD which I just unselected and now they don’t even show up (I never used that). Other than that, good integration.

Steering wheel controls worked with android radio, but only volume, mute and “call hang up” works for CarPlay, which is the exact same behavior of OEM CarPlay in my 718.

I’m pleasantly surprised at how good this looks in person.

Installation and details video coming soon in my channel (https://youtube.com/@porscheDIY?sub_confirmation=1), after I receive the other unit.

If you have seen my videos on PCM3.1 CarPlay upgrade, you know that I started with Joye CP module, then moved to Isudar, then to Mr12Volt. Mr12Volt audio quality and connection reliability were the best, but fall short with video quality. This is yet the latest adventure with my head unit.

You can download XM Radio from android store, but I’m assuming is still an app and uses cell streaming service instead of the car antenna. Furthermore, if you decide to install as part of android radio, you may need a SIM card.

I’m not sure if there is a module that could be connected to the antena and then to the AUX input of the unit.

Check the 12.3” Android radio installation video on my 2015 Porsche Macan S here, and subscribe to the channel for the full story on this…

Installing another 12.3" Android Radio unit in my 2015 Porsche Macan...

thanks for the video. covering up that silly sticker with a wrap doesn't look horrible. this unit does look more appealing visually and the vent ducts seems much improved. that bounce back knob seems really dumb though, ugh. what is it with these terrible design decisions?

installation looks like it was quite challenging to route all those wires around the ducts.

it is quite disappointing given the cost of these units that it came with a subpar MOST converter. so the real cost is now $1120 instead of $990.

i was excited to maybe buy one of these but i'm not so hot on that idea anymore.

A few updates... Thanks to @Don16, who had been asking questions to vendor as well…. This is hot off the press…

(1) The vendor confirms that the manufacturer built 1500 units with the infamous red dot, but going forward, they will manufacture without the dot.

(2) Since I got the unit, they have upgraded it to add a TOSLINK Optical output as well as a Digital Coaxial output.

Eventhough the unit audio is great (digital quality) with the new box, I have initiated a return (within my return window) as I want to get a unit with digital output and without the red dot. Not sure when that’s going to be, but willing to wait…

Thanks @Don16 for following up on this…

I could overlook the right knob, but will wait for the unit without the red dot. I presume the diamond button on the steering wheel is still a no go. Plus my trim is chocolate / luxor beige with wood lol. This trim is black.

But to tell you something guys, if enough of us signed a digital petition to Porsche, they'd do an OEM unit like they did for other older models. Check this out:

Can I get Apple CarPlay in a classic Porsche? Apple CarPlay isn’t just limited to current models – more and more classic Porsche cars now have the ability to access Apple CarPlay. Porsche Classic Communication Management (PCCM) and Porsche Classic Communication Management Plus (PCCM Plus) are official infotainment systems that allow you to get Apple CarPlay in specific earlier Porsche cars. These include almost all classic cars, every 911 generation (up to type 997.1), Boxster and Cayman vehicles until 2008 (up to type 987) and the first-generation Cayenne (models up until 2008). Alongside CarPlay, PCCM and PCCM Plus also have USB connectivity, digital radio, and Bluetooth functions. PCCM Plus systems are also Android Auto-ready.

If Porsche do this, most likely it will be a PCM3.1-like unit with the 4:3 screen ratio. But, only time will tell.

Thanks man! I do really appreciate and value this community. I had been a member since 2014, so I can tell you I have seen a lot of people come and go, some that I miss talking with very much, but all very good people. Since I enjoy it so much, I like to give back as much as possible. Great group here…

So, I decided to try a return of my unit because I wanted the digital Toslink optical output. The story is a bit long… so, bear with me…

I initiated a return within my 15-day return period to DaiNav.

The vendor contacted me and he was going ballistic… asking me why I had initiated a dispute. To which I told him that I didn’t. I just initiated a return within my 15-day grace period…

The guy was all over… like accusing me of being a professional returner…😂…. First time I hear this….

I have written proof about he telling me that I could return the unit if it wasn’t satisfactory, when I told him that not having the optical output was a deal breaker before they shipped. And that on those grounds I would accept shipment… I forwarded that to him while we were discussing the return, which he wasn’t willing to accept.

In any case, after a lot of back and forth, I asked him if he could send me the electronic board with the optical output, and I would install it.

After an hour or so, he came back stating that he could send me the optical board for me to install, only if I drop the dispute and send him $1 for logistics…

So, we ended up in an amicable place again…😂.

They are going to send me this…

To install in location…. I’ll have to open the unit.

Honestly, I don’t think I’ll be using this optical output, as the converter box I got from Amazon is so good. Quality of audio had been phenomenal so far.

I also told the DaiNav guy that I had to buy a new converter box in order to improve audio. He asked me for a photo, which I forwarded. Hopefully he incorporate this box/design into future units.

In order for unit optical output (Toslink) to work, they will need to provide a box like the one in the photos below:

Interesting update. Sure sounds like a lot of hassle.

Do you have a link to that toslink to MOST adapter?

I can only find the version that does analog RCA to MOST.

Oddly, it seemingly has the same part number.
I’m providing all this information for anyone who would order, that they can negotiate the right box with the vendor.

The box in the last photo is also from Amazon, from a vendor called Plejbona. In the photo it looks like RCA to MOST, but is really Toslink to MOST.

i meant the vendor sounds like a lot of hassle - some questionable customer service there. i appreciate all the info you've provided.

google and amazon search are failing me. i cannot find that MOST converter, even when searching by "Plejbona".

this is the most similar one i see listed but it has a different model number:

That’s the one… I don’t remember it being this expensive… I actually got it at $136.

Is the toslink to MOST adapter what is needed on the Macan's with the [9VL] Bose Surround Sound System or is that used with your aftermarket amplifier?

I recently started following you on youtube as well. I had been debating how to add android auto to my Macan and this type of system is what I was looking for.

Had some questions on functionality:
Does this newer system allow music from an SD card or USB stick as well?
Does it have standard AM/FM functionality?
Does it have the ability to show some of the info from the stock system such as elevation?
I'm assuming it doesn't have offline/native NAV, but wanted to confirm. I occasionally use that in areas with poor cell service when I haven't pre-downloaded offline maps.
Do the buttons on the steering wheel still work to answer and hang up phone?

I'm not sure if this is all covered in your next review video or not. If it's in the review video you have planned I can wait for that rather than have you repeat answers here.

Thanks

I can answer questions here, no issues (as long as you watch the video when it comes out…. Just kidding…😊).

1. Not SD, it doesn’t have SD slot, but I believe it would from USB. I have to test that.

2. Yes, it does have normal AM/FM radio working out of the car’s antenna.

3. No. You can probably obtain information on things like elevation from an Android app.

4. It doesn’t, but it can be installed. The first unit I installed came with iGo, with a downloaded offline US map. You would access iGo by setting the NAV button to the app. In this unit I have now, it has Google Maps and I downloaded offline maps, but haven’t been able to figure out how to make it work offline for directions. I can see the map offline, but it doesn’t seem to be working with the GPS antenna. I downloaded iGo, and in this case, I’ll have to pay a one-time fee to download the north american map. I may just do that to have Navi in those cases I need to navigate offline. In this new unit, you can program the Navi icon to open the Navigation app of your choice.

5. The buttons on the steering wheel work as follows: (1) Call pick up button: only works to pick up active calls, it doesn’t work to initiate calls; (2) diamond/joker button: changes mode, like going from radio to video to Bluetooth audio, etc… (on this one, I wish you could use it to skip music, but honestly the skip button is close enough in the unit to be OK); (3) volume rotary knob works as intended, increasing and decreasing volume when rotated and muting when pressed; (4) the call end button on the right side, works as intended to end active call.

Let me know if you have any questions. I’ll be sure to cover these questions in the review video. Thanks for the support to the channel.

Plejbona is the vendor for the prior unit I installed (with all buttons) which I got from Amazon, not the one I have installed now (vendor is DaiNav for that one). Plejbona is the only unit I found that provided a box with Toslink to MOST converter.

So, I decided to keep the DaiNav unit, as they are providing the optical output for me to install. Given that, I decided to stay with the unit, even with the red dot.

Just covered the red dot with a NFC button that looks the part. I think it covers it very well and is not very apparent…. And it has a purpose (which I haven’t defined) but it is an NFC chip.

What do you think?

Unrelated, what conditioner and\or cleaner are you using on your seats? The leather looks great, I want to press my face against it lol.

#116 ·
Well, I took the hit for everyone else… :)

Now you we all know is a permanent red dot… new units will have digital output (thanks to my original feedback to the vendor) and new units (after they sell the 1500 they already manufactured) will not have the dot thanks to my and many other’s feedback. But someone had to be the Guinea Pig…. 😆

I use Griot’s leather cleaner and conditioner. And I do almost exactly as @djbooya states… apply often (try to do it every 2 months and I apply enough, sometimes 2 passes per cleaning). I mostly do front seats, because rear seats are rarely used, but try to do rear seats once or twice per year.

One of the things I like the most is that it preserves the matte color of the leather.

Griot's Garage 11019 3-in-1 Leather Cleaner 16oz https://a.co/d/hP78Ecl

Not bad for a 9-year old car with 130K miles…😊.
