This is my latest experiment…. This one will be uninstalled and returned as I got another one that seems to have better integration and much cleaner look with better trim details…. I was able to secure digital quality audio end to end and the sound is as good as PCM3.1 digital. No loss of audio quality…

Trims are not all the way in, as I’m going to be swapping all this next week, but I wrapped one of them in brushed aluminum to match the rest of my trims which were already wrapped.

Overall impressions are good. I lost intersection light (which I was expecting and not a big deal), and map/audio screens in MFD which I just unselected and now they don’t even show up (I never used that). Other than that, good integration.

Steering wheel controls worked with android radio, but only volume, mute and “call hang up” works for CarPlay, which is the exact same behavior of OEM CarPlay in my 718.

I’m pleasantly surprised at how good this looks in person.

Installation and details video coming soon in my channel (https://youtube.com/@porscheDIY?sub_confirmation=1), after I receive the other unit.

If you have seen my videos on PCM3.1 CarPlay upgrade, you know that I started with Joye CP module, then moved to Isudar, then to Mr12Volt. Mr12Volt audio quality and connection reliability were the best, but fall short with video quality. This is yet the latest adventure with my head unit.

I think the Macan screen size PCM5 is 10.9” and the new Cayenne PCM6 is 12.3”. But even the Cayenne screen is skinnier and longer than the 12.3” screen in this unit. I know because I bought a Cayenne 12.3” screen protector and it didn’t fit my unit. Too skinny and too long.

Having said this, the trims will have to accommodate for a very different screen size, regardless if it is 10.9” or 12.3” in Porsche screen size, which is different than the 12.3” aftermarket unit size.

It wont fit, unfortunately.

See below. If you are going to order one, you should wait until I release video with review. There are some quirks that I think you should be aware of. Nothing biggie, unless you find that one of the issues is a deal breaker…

I purchased Gen3 OEM knobs, and although they would not fit as the hole is smaller than the knobs this unit had, I was able to carefully drill some material out with the right drill bit… and pushed them in…. The result, magnificent. It does look more OEM now….

No significant difference. Works well, in terms of audio quality and performance. But it seem more like an afterthought from the physical installation perspective. The vents are gloss, which do not go well with the rest of the center console. The vents are open, and very small, with significant restriction to air flow. The side trims are not as polished and look somewhat different from the rest of the trims in the car.

On the other hand, this unit, even without physical buttons, looks more OEM and built for purpose. Vents are same or similar material as center console. They are bigger and actually have dials to close them independently, just like with the side vents. The side trims look OEM. There are details on the top of the unit and the bottom of the unit that cover gaps better. The only minor issue for me if the permanent red sticker, but I'm looking at options on how to address.

Overall, there are more positives to the second unit, even though both have their own quirks.

Some side by side...

This photo shows first unit, you can see how it doesn't cover the part where the AC vent was before...
Image

This is the second unit, and it covers everything, leaving no gaps exposed...
Image

The first unit, the vents are glossy, smaller and don't have any way to close them, but if you see below the vents, there is no trim cover and that leaves a hole where you can see the all the way in when light hits...
Image

The second unit has vents that are matte and combine better with center console material. Vents are bigger and can be closed. And lastly, it does have a trim cover that covers the gap between center console and vents.

Agree. No perfect unit out there... this one would had been close to perfect without that permanent red dot... I ordered a black NFC sticker that I'm going to place over it, at least gives that cover a purpose. Not sure how am I going to program the NFC yet, but I'll come up with something. I'll post photos tomorrow after I receive and install...

after seeing the fitment and the inability to close the center vents, that first unit is a hard pass for me.

on the second unit, that red warning is so obnoxious. what an utterly stupid thing to do. it looks like the material there is a glossy surface with those buttons on either side being capacitive, so sanding and painting isn't really an option. covering it up seems to be the only solution?

my interior is also agate gray, which in non metallic is pretty much brown. i know the pcm unit is already black but i think it might look janky to have an entire black center there.

I just overlaid a piece of vinyl wrap over the buttons, and they still work. If I can print the buttons on a vinyl label, maybe that will work. Then cut it in place…

The only issue is at night, these buttons light up… you won’t be able to see them at night if you overlay a cover.

Here you go…. I got with DaiNav, but there are some additional vendors now…

There are some quirks that you need to know about. I will release video on that, but to give you a preview:

1. Right knob do not rotate infinitely. Just rotates partially either way and then spring back to center… this is a different behavior than with PCM and the first unit.

2. The Home Screen is not very customizable… at least I haven’t found a way…

3. Steering wheel controls, the joker button change modes and can’t be programmed to do anything else on the unit. I like to use to skip music, maybe it can be programmed by vendor by updating MCU.
