This is my latest experiment…. This one will be uninstalled and returned as I got another one that seems to have better integration and much cleaner look with better trim details…. I was able to secure digital quality audio end to end and the sound is as good as PCM3.1 digital. No loss of audio quality…

Trims are not all the way in, as I’m going to be swapping all this next week, but I wrapped one of them in brushed aluminum to match the rest of my trims which were already wrapped.

Overall impressions are good. I lost intersection light (which I was expecting and not a big deal), and map/audio screens in MFD which I just unselected and now they don’t even show up (I never used that). Other than that, good integration.

Steering wheel controls worked with android radio, but only volume, mute and “call hang up” works for CarPlay, which is the exact same behavior of OEM CarPlay in my 718.

I’m pleasantly surprised at how good this looks in person.

Installation and details video coming soon in my channel (https://youtube.com/@porscheDIY?sub_confirmation=1), after I receive the other unit.

If you have seen my videos on PCM3.1 CarPlay upgrade, you know that I started with Joye CP module, then moved to Isudar, then to Mr12Volt. Mr12Volt audio quality and connection reliability were the best, but fall short with video quality. This is yet the latest adventure with my head unit.

It looks like a newer version of our unit. Screenshot from an Aliexpress review.

Different resolution screen and processor.

This thread does make reference to newer FYT units using the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor which is what the you linked to appears to be. Doing a little more research it may be a Qualcomm Clone processor -- the description from here seems to indicate it is "Exceptional system performance based on Qualcomm 64-bit octa-core ARM Kryo 260 processors"

It sounds to me like it's a clone, but does it matter? Not really, I don't think it matters for what you/we are using these for. Just an information tidbit since I couldn't find any official Qualcomm SC668S processor specs.

Okay thanks, this is coming back to me. The blue box is for analog RCA to MOST.

I'm also now recalling that because these units only output two channel audio, you lose the ability to fade front to rear with the stock system as well. Not a big deal for me - the NAV-TV analog to MOST converter in my 997 is the same way.

I'm aware a majority of the aftermarket car audio industry still relies on analog RCA for signal path. I'm mostly just trying to reduce the number of conversions if possible.

Short of pictures from either of these vendors coming back with something missing, it sounds like I need to decide between the known FYT Android 12 unit everyone here is using with close-able vents, integrated mic, and hackable joker button for track advance vs. the less known Android 13 unit with non close-able vents, programmable joker button, and no integrated mic. I'm guessing between the two there likely other quirks.

FYT does make Qualcomm based systems running Android 13, but the software is all new and not compatible with the older FYT units based on Android 10 and Unisoc 7862 processors. There hasn’t been much, if any, software development for the newer units, so personally I think the tried and true system with support here and at XDA is a better choice for now.

@signde , Ping this vendor......they have been very ressponsive to development, @Santirx and I communicate with them currently and may be very good for support. They respond on WA like immed. And NOT sold on aliexpress. thats huge.

If I was gonna buy a replacement....it would probably be here. But get details in the unit.

Thanks. I couldn't find a WhatsApp contact but I sent them a message using the chat feature.

One thing I noticed right away is the unit pictured does not have adjustments for the vents, so that is a negative.

The price is also a little high, unless it comes with the fiber optic converter, which I asked about.

Ask the seller for actual pictures of the front and back of the unit as well as of the about screen. If the ports look the same as the other FYT units here, you’ll be in the same boat as the rest of us. You’ll also want to see how the vents connect to make sure it’s like the FYT unit the rest of us have purchased. The newer Android versions may be a negative in terms of aftermarket (user) development and support, if it is even actually newer version and not just a modified label in the software.

I suppose it’s possible there are better units out there, but based on the feedback at XDA, the best units are FYT 7862 Android 10 (often sold as Android 12). The newer Qualcomm 6125 models are more locked down, but do have a newer version of Android (13 I believe). Unless you’re using straight Android (as opposed to Android Auto or CarPlay), there’s no advantage to a newer Android version.

As someone who hasn't installed one of these yet, I beg to differ that they are in no shape or form similar.

The front of the updated Topway units look almost identical to your FYT unit now minus different labels around the knobs and slightly different markings on the knobs.

The back of course is a different story. Now that I know what to look for there I'm having a very hard time finding a listing that doesn't look like a Topway.

I've messaged about ten different sellers asking for pictures, only one of which looks like they have the FYT unit based on the listings.

I don’t know what to tell you then. It looks somewhat similar on the surface, but they are not. As I said before, they added the vent closure mechanism and deleted the buttons, but that’s about it. You’ll be very disappointed with the fitment and trims.

The vent ducts are still severely restricted, so almost no air will come out of those vents. The trims will not cover parts of the dashboard and you will be left with some holes and depressions that are there to make sure PCM3.1 and original vents fit, but that this unit will not hide...

Look at my FYT unit review video. I compare both units there. And then you’ll see the night and day difference.

But, if you want to get the topway unit, be my guest. Don’t tell me I didn’t warn you though…☺

I wouldn’t trust the pictures in the listing. Ask the vendor for actual pictures of the product they’re selling. Then you have some recourse if it’s different on arrival. I’ve seen many listings that use pictures of multiple clearly different units.

You could be a pioneer and go for one of the Qualcomm FYT units with the better vent routing. If this works well out of the box, the aftermarket support from XDA or here becomes significantly less important. Especially if relying on CarPlay/AA, the base Android system is less important. An example of an issue that might not have an easy solution in this case would be the steering wheel controls.

Yeah I touched on this earlier, the listings are dumpster fires, often with pictures of multiple different units. Asking for actual pictures is what I have been doing. I've copy pasta'd the same question to a dozen sellers now.

I don't care about the base Android system, 99% of the time I will be in CarPlay.

I feel like I have a clear handle on the original FYT unit versus the two versions of the Topway now. Can you ELI5 to me how I can differentiate the newer Qualcomm FYT unit from the older one? Does this require a picture from the Android about device screen?

I do care about the steering controls working and the joker button doing track advance as well.

Many of these sellers I reached out to have replied. Some of them with as much nonsense as the listings, which I expected. I made a spreadsheet to keep track.

General takeaways -
  • The Topwell units are the cheapest with a floor of around $675 shipped for the lowest storage option. I have no interest in these, even at the lower price.
  • The newer FYT units are in the middle, around $730 shipped but the inability to close the vents and the unknowns around XDA support are turnoffs to me. I also read a pretty scathing review in one of the comments about crashing and lockups which does not inspire much confidence.
  • The original FYT units are still the most expensive. I've not found any under $950 shipped which doesn't even include a Toslink converter.
The thought of getting one of these for $750 including a Toslink box was somewhat appealing until I realized that is the inferior unit.

At over $1000 when you factor in a Toslink box for the tried and true FYT unit, I'm having a hard time justifying.

I was able to connect with Milo from ACARDASH on WhatsApp. Here are the pictures of their unit that are not also on the product listing:

Questions and replies:

Q: does it have optical toslink output?
A: Yes, have optical output

Q: is the board for this unit made by FYT? or Topwell? or another manufacturer?
A: MTK Another manufactuer

Q: do you know the resolution of the screen
A: 1920*720

Q: do you know which mediatek CPU it has?
A: mtk8667

Q: i have the bose system. do you provide the fiber box for pure digital passthrough or does the box you provide receive analog RCA which is converted to digital MOST?
A: Yes have optical fiber box

Q: and that is included automatically or do i have to purchase that separately?
A: Included

Q: do you know if the porsche steering wheel joker button can be programmed to skip tracks? this is a problem area for the FYT units.
A: Our unit steering wheel control works no problem

Q: will there be future firmware updates? if so who will provide those? is there a manufacturer website for them?
A: yes, we provide firmware upgrade

----

This person could put on a clinic on how to answer a question without answering a question lol. Some quite unspecific answers but maybe that is the language barrier. At least they were responsive.

I am not convinced it comes with a straight digital to digital output chain. "have optical output" could refer to the MOST box pictured above, which could take analog RCA then sends as optical to the MOST system, particularly since I see a converter box with RCA outs as well. It could be the angle but I also don't see Toslink optical output on the back of the unit.
EDIT: The box pictured says digital coaxial input, so maybe it is pure digital.

Also a very non direct answer on the joker button.

I am guessing since this has a MediaTek processor it is not FYT or Topwell. Some poking around on XDA shows mentions of MTK8667 and FF_866X in this thread Junsun V1 8667Q. The rear of the unit looks similar to others there but not quite the same.

Anyone have any ideas on what this box is and/or if it has much aftermarket support?

My initial reaction is a lot of unknowns and I probably don't want to be the canary in the coal mine.

#471 ·
There are two different MOST adapters shown. One says MOST150 (ie for PCM 4) and the other says for PCM 3.1. The first one shows stereo analog RCA inputs. The second appears to be a single RCA in and says “coaxial digital” so that is probably digital to digital.

You would be a pioneer going with this unit. Limited support here or at XDA. Mediatek seems to be a less popular choice in this space. I also wouldn’t trust the answer about steering wheel controls - I bet every vendor says they work perfectly. And honestly, the FYT works almost perfectly out of the box in that regard (just the joker button is off, which nobody outside of the Porsche world has heard of).

Remember, the vendors are just resellers, so not really experts. It’s like asking the salesman at Best Buy 😂.

#472 · (Edited)
Well, you need to hack the FYT to enable the real BT, and other areas to make it work awesome. If these work out of the box, or with direct support from ACAR, I would be very intersted in trying it. They do a lot of Porsche modles its seems. If you are using Bose.....a direct fiber connection may not provide noticebale sound difference......but maybe the rear fader will work ??

Inquire again with Joker button, with example, or ask for a video of it being activated......without effect on 12.3.

#473 ·
Yeah I know they are just resellers, which is why I tried to pin them down on who actually makes it or supplies firmware updates.

Yes I edited my comment right after posting when I saw the "coaxial digital" part on the one box. That does make it slightly more appealing given the price. I'm still turned off by the inability to close the vents though. I also don't really want to be a pioneer - if the unit is really buggy I know I could return it but my time is more valuable than the hassle.

Regarding the joker button, my understanding is earlier in this thread there is a solution to get it working for the 1st gen FYT units? IIRC there is some Android activity swapping back and forth because a second app takes the foreground maybe? But it works, I thought.

#476 ·
I settled on FYT if I decide to pull the trigger but I'm having a hard time justifying given my total cost with the pure digital MOST box will be well over 1k.

I thought the price on all these had come down to the 600-700 mark, not realizing those units are not the same.

The spreadsheet I posted earlier is up to date if anyone else goes down this road right now.

On a side note, a side effect of messaging all these sellers is that they will not leave me alone. I wake daily to messages from the sellers who seem irritated I have not bought from them. I tell them I will be purchasing from another vendor and yet they aggressively argue with me and keep replying even when I ask them to stop. Many ask me why I am not buying so I told them. One Topwell seller told me "FYT is bad", another said "FYT is so expensive". The cultural mindset is very strange.

Hello,

I am really hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Recently bought a 2017 Porsche Macan Turbo and immediately upgraded it with a INAV 12.3 inch screen from 4x4.

I spend the weekend installing it. It went pretty well, got about 85% of everything working. Really happy with it so far. A few issues I have not been able to resolve yet

360 camera is black. I see the guide markers and the radar works. No camera image. It was all working fine with the oem. I am assuming it has to be reading it to give me the radar signals but the input must be incorrect. Any ideas how to change this?

Steering wheel controls are all messed up. The right side of the steering wheel is now controlling audio which also makes the right gauge on the cluster start changing. I tried using the SWC to make changes and can't figure out how to do it.

USB doesn't seem to be working. From the videos Santirx posted it looks like the yellow pin is the USB. I have multiple colors (see attached photo) and no clue which one is the USB.

I bought an adapter to use the OEM gps. Is there an app people are using for aftermarket radios that utilize the gps? The default one on mine is google maps, which I would just use with android auto and have offline maps downloaded around my area anyways. Just trying to figure out how to actually utilize the onboard gps.

Otherwise everything seems to work with no loss of audio quality. Please see my pictures and let me know if you see anything obviously wrong. I have reached out to tech support as well so hoping they have some answers as well.

You need to verify your settings in the menu that requires a passcode 3368. Make sure you select the appropriate camera system you have (either rear only or 360). There should be a few options are there (like 360 switch or single 360). Play with those settings. Also there a “switch backup camera” with two options… check that too.

For example, I have rear camera only and the 360 switch is off, also single 360 if off, and the switch backup camera is set to default (not the 360).

If that doesn’t work, I will suspect a bad connection.

I appreciate the replies. Fixed the camera and steering wheel issue. Pass code for mine was 8888 - had to change the video source. The steering wheel was set to the PCM 3.1. Had to hold the phone button for 15 seconds and it switched it to the other one, fixing that issue as well. Apparently the OEM USB isn't supported, so I just got a low-profile high-powered 12v charger. With wireless Android auto no need to connect to the head unit.

Hmmm.. so your unit isn’t FYT then? And by looking at your unit’s rear connections, they don’t look anything like mine. Can you post a photo of your unit, how it looks installed?

In any case, I’m glad that this worked for you.
