Shopping for a Macan has been exciting but also a little overwhelming at times. There are so many options and trims. I want a dependable German engineered car at that day that will last my family a long time. Did I mention I hate the car buying process lol.

Whatever the engine flavor and besides different design and performance bits, any Macan will be a great DD.

I am one of those in the it is not a Porsche engine camp.

Its role is only to make the Macan more fuel efficient across the range of variants.

It is reasonably quick for a 2.0 SUV but it is detuned compared to what it is in the VAG models it powers.

You have to work the 2.0 hard to get it moving where in an S you simply press the gas and it flies.

Get an S with a proper V6 engine.

Those with a 2.0 will now come back and argue in favour of the 2.0 they have but ask the question of if they are seeking to upgrade the power, if they are honest some will say yes, which begs the question as to why the did not buy the more powerful S to start off with.

Its a two tonne SUV after all and it needs a decent power output to move it with ease

Honestly, the Base is quick enough for me. And, honestly, having more power is not a top priority if the smaller engine has the torque and power sufficient for my needs. Plenty of torque get around.

If the 2.0 was tuned like its VAG cousins, would you then care if was not a Porsche engine? I think you would care just the same. Be honest.

I drove a GTS, an S and the Base. Came down to the S and Base. Tough decision and I took my time. I was honest and I am a happy owner.

Agree that the 2.0 is here because of efficiency but it’s power is good enough for many. Obviously, you don’t care for it so why not give solid advice — have a prospective buyer drive all the trims within budget and then make an educated decision based on the specific need.

Honestly, anyone lurking ‘round these parts ain’t no dummy.

the 2.0 did its job, it brought in lots of prospective buyers into the dealership due to its attractive low price tag. I saw one in the mall and I went to the dealership to start my search. I ended up with the S. for $6-7k more, you get about 100 more HP, better exhaust sound, better trim and upgrades all around the car, 19" wheels, bigger brakes, twin turbo vs one, quad exhaust tips. And yes, I got an original Porsche engine, not something from VW/Audi, which is really what defines a car in my opinion.

I drove the 2.0 on a 5 day trip from NYC to Montreal, 9-10 hours drive there and back and driving while I was there. The engine is fine once you're up to speed. But if you enjoy spirited driving at all (like most Porsche owners should) the 2.0 will be lacking. It felt like my MIL's 2015 Q3 with around 200-220HP in a smaller SUV. The base just did have the guts when accelerating/city driving.

For me - I was in the same place as you are; Base or S ? .. the large brakes on front made my decision to go with the S. Had a 2.0 in my Q5 and was enough power for me but the brakes were weak. So now I have the large brakes and extra power . Life Is Good!
What ever you chose you'll be happy with for sure . Macans are great cars

again it boils down to personal preference. I drove both base and S and felt base was good, but went with S just because it has Porsche engine.. Didn't want to get VW/Audi engine.

I had four VWs prior to the Macan. Last two were Audi engines (V8 FSI and V6 TDI diesel) so I certainly understand power and torque. It's all one company to me but I can see where it might matter to those who care. The 2.0 is a solid, proven engine -- that's what matters to me.

As you have had the V6 TDi engine if you imagine it in a Macan with similar power to the base 2.0 litre you have but with a huge amount torque then that is the Macan SD that we have in other countries.

It is a way, way better engine in a Macan than the 4 pot 2.0 with its diesel V6 the huge torque that gives effortless acceleration, and quick initial pick up. No drama, no screaming engine, it just goes, much like a Macan with a V6 petrol engine.

The V6 TDI sure is a better engine than the 2.0. I joined this forum since the diesel was slated to come here. I was on a list for pre-orders. The 2.0 is still good enough for many.

Many on here will say "It's not a real Porsche engine".
Many would say the Macan is not a real Porsche either, as it is mostly Audi, just like many would say anything not a 911 is not a Porsche.
Bottom line: if it comes from a Porsche factory, it is a Porsche, as is everything inside it.

No point in plugging us in North America with how way way better the carcinogenic diesel engine is. The fact is, we do not get it here, and probably never ever will. Good riddance, IMHO. For the real max torque from zero rpm, the rumoured Macan EV, if it ever sees the light of production, will provide it in spades without any dirty diesel strings attached. In the meantime, my Turbo has all the torque that I ever really need or even fully use, and instead I lately find a tendency to pick up the keys to the wife's base Macan for ad hoc errands as it's not only almost twice as fuel efficient in practical driving on the highway at 80 mph (at which speed my Turbo sucks that premium fuel faster than any 911 with more power I've ever owned), but is an amazing value in terms of "tossability" too because of its more svelte mass. The diesel engine is appreciably heavier than the gas engine too.

Had the base for a loaner. It was ok but I noticed a bit of lag in acceleration. I was happy to get back in my S which was of course faster with 340 hp.

I’ve driven the Macan S a few times and loved it. Power, handling, sound... everything. Would I be disappointed with the Macan Base and 2.0 engine. How much different is the power, acceleration and even the handling and sound. Thanks

I havent watched Nick's video but after test driving both, S was a winner for me.
If you loved the S, a base will feel lackluster in power but handling and everything is the same if not better.

I believe Nick Murray said it best in his Macan video commentary:

Just watched the video. As I thought I’d prob feel it doesn’t measure up. Prob good I haven’t driven a GTS or Turbo. Thx
