You would be surprised that they are all almost the same, you'll see trucks of different brands fill up in the same refinery. The companies state that then they add their own detergents and additives before selling at the pump, to be honest I don't know if this is true or not.

 

I use Kirkland brand from Costco Their 92 octane gas is consistently $0.25 to $0.30 cheaper than any other gas station in my area and it is located less than 1 mile from my house.

It is the cheapest. But I use 76 and Valero gas only....

For the SF Bay Area only, of those two choices, the 76 brand is marginally the better quality gasoline. The 76/Phillips66 refinery located in Rodeo CA is one of the few west coast refineries which does not have a Fluid Catalytic Cracker (FCC). Thus, there will be less sulfur and less olefins in their product. And while there is no guarantee that the Bay Area 76 stations will always have product from that specific refinery, it is highly likely that most of the time they will. To be fair, the quality difference compared to other brands is quite small, so I would still recommend you make your selection based on price and convenience among the Top Tier brands.

I would pay more attention to the Ethanol content of the gasoline than the brand. 92 octane 10% Ethanol gasoline is as close to a commodity as you can come. I don't think there is any measurable difference between one brand or another. However, remove the 10% Ethanol, or change the octane to 93, and now you have a different product. If you want to baby your engine, finding gasoline without the incredibly corrosive Ethanol is something you should consider.

 

I'm somewhat skeptical about the whole process but I stick with the Top Tier brands, Shell, Exxon, Mobil, Chevron, Conoco, Phillips 66 and some others. These Top Tier brands are endorsed by those oil/gas companies and several auto manufactures including Toyota, BMW, VW and Audi. Supposedly. the big difference is these brands contain appropriate amounts of deposit fighting detergents. I'm not sure whether it really makes a difference but figure I'll play it safe.

 

For the U.S. market, the reformulated gasoline standards have largely homogenized the gasoline pool quality among the different refiners. The current standards have already removed most of the sulfur and nitrogen, which are precursors to sludge formation; and further sulfur reductions are mandated for 2017 to bring the rest of the U.S. inline with the current California standards. Thus, any Top Tier gasoline will do. This includes the major brands listed above, and Costco as well. Among the Top Tier brands, I would recommend that you buy the premium grade based on price and convenience.

Some gas is listed as "top tier". Whether this is fact or junk science i don't know. Top Tier Gasoline

Either way one thing i do care about is using a gas where the station and the pumps are new and clean .

 

Actually, you want to care about how fast gas is turned around. Gasoline Expiration - Ethanol Blend Fuels Have a Short Shelf Life

E10 has a shelf life of 3 months. If your gas station doesn't sell enough gas to refresh the tanks every 3 months, and then it sits for how long in your tank? It could be be bad gas. Although a self fulfilled prophecy, its better to wait in line at a high volume station than zip in and out as that lonely station.

Will it really gum things up? Stick the E10 in a home generator without Stable for 6 months and see what happens. Not good.

 

Another reason why I like to go to Costco for gas. It is amazing how much gas they sell there and it is very common to see the gas truck filling up their tanks all the time.

 

Another thing I care about is not refueling while a tanker truck is filling the tanks at the gas station. Perhaps this is old school and no longer necessary but I still follow it.

 

E0 (ethanol free) most important, and then top tier @ at least 91 octane.

 

Shell. No corn industry subsidy fuel in their 91 gas here.

 

She'll Nitro+. I never cared much but I'm getting better mileage and the engine runs smoother than when I was using other brands around here. The info in other posts about using a busy gas station is true. Fresh is always better than stale!

 

I pay more attention to octane I'm pretty skeptical on how proprietary the gas actually is.

 

The premium I get from my local BJs warehouse store gets me better fuel economy than any other brand I've tried. Never had a fuel issue with a vehicle in 8 years of using it.

 

Both our Porsche and Lexus service people recommend Chevron for our cars.

 

Chevron is more expensive and I think the difference is it has more cleaner additives. Its fuel injector cleaner is sold everywhere, at Costco too.

 

I use that Shell station too and the 76 one at Camden and Bascom. I am sure we have met at those stations during gasing up.

 

Shell if I can but 99% of the time, it's Sunoco (located near my area). I stick with name brands (Shell, EM, Sunoco, BP, etc.).

Any nationally-owned fuel seller who sells 93 octane...Shell, Marathon, BP...whatever is convenient. As long as they sell enough volume to keep the fuel in their tanks fresh, gas is gas...
