Hello,

This not really a complaint, My turbo started to shudder when I was backing up and when I put it drive it would shudder in 1st, 2nd and a little in 3rd. The car has 14k miles. I brought to the dealer and it turns out that the transfer case has gone out. The dealer was great.
We are awaiting new cv joints that Porsche recommended to be replaced also.

The car has been a great car, this is more of a heads up to all on this forum.

As I stated in another thread, my SM said he has an appointment line for Macan TC's only. Said he had a big pile in the rear of the shop he wanted to show me. I declined.

Seriously, ask to go for a ride with the shop lead technician! Show him. Let him feel it. Then let him drive it and see if he lies to your face. If that fails, ask to speak with the GM. If that doesn't work, drive to another agency.

If you have another dealership within a reasonable driving distance, consider getting a second opinion.

You can also contact Porsche NA and open a complaint ticket with them.

There have been a few reports of members changing the transfer case oil, and having their issues resolved.....at least for the time being.

Best of luck with your path forward.

Feel your pain. Had a 2016 CPO S. TC failed right after I got it (Oct 2018). Failed again (Jan 2020). Dealer giving run around like yours on second replacement - did not want to do it. Car was coming off CPO and traded it. Do I miss it? Not really. I think CPO is a bit of a game with some dealers. They certify a car that has problems and when the car is brought back for repairs - $$ for repairs..... I will never buy another one.

My dealer caught mine when I brought her in for the 20K service. The service manager called me about 30 minutes after I dropped the car off and he told me that he had bad news and good news. Bad news was that I had a bad transfer case, and the good news was that it was covered under warranty (I wanted to say no kidding but didn't). He said that he noticed it right off the bat when he was pulling it out of the welcome bay to take it to the garage.

Having my transfer case replaced as I write this. I posted something about it a couple of weeks ago here: Does your front end hop and skip on tight turns?
(my thread was apparently moved to this) People suggested that the shuddering I was feeling at low speed with the wheel turned sharply was likely Ackerman. SA said the same thing when I emailed him but said bring it in and he would check it out. I wasn't planning on it but as "luck" would have it I got a flat and needed tires anyway (the dealer actually has really good deals on tires). So I said to check out the TC while I was there and sure enough, having it replaced under CPO warranty. 2017 S I bought 9 months ago with 50K mi, now has 77K miles.

You were absolutely right - transfer case. Also a drive shaft. Does a bad transfer case hurt the drive shaft ? Or unrelated ? And recently when the steering wheel moves up upon a start it would make a grinding noise. The fix was a new steering column. All warranty work. It makes me feel better about my $750 2nd year oil change from the dealer.

I have started noticing that the car does not shift smoothly from 2nd to 3rd gear about 2 months ago.. The dealer wasn't able to duplicate the concern. Ever since, the following symptoms are present:

1) Light acceleration at gear 2 and 3 slight judder (feels like small bumps on the road but road is smooth), and sometimes it makes a grinding noise during shifts in the middle at the bottom of the vehicle
2) Decelerate when downshift from gear 3 to 2, hesitation (feels like pulling from the back) before coming to a full stop
3) Slight hesitation when reversing slowly
4) Highway speed – if release gas pedal, and press gas pedal again, car vibrates (feel it on the gas pedal and steering wheel)
5) When the car is slowing down to almost 20-30 km/h at gear 2/3, and when I accelerate again, the car judders/hesitates a little with grinding noises.

All of the above are more pronounced when on an incline.

I am wondering if the transfer case is failing. Will be bringing the car to the dealership next week to take care of an ongoing oil leak issue (4th visit in 2 months), and hopefully they can fix both issues once and for all.

I am interested to read this....
that the problem can start early

My '16S came to me 18 mos ago w/ 4,300 miles--- now has 8500

I feel a shudder from a dead start... shifting is fine at higher RPM's
I mentioned this to my service rep- he immediately booked me for a 2 day appt
Happens most times - not always
One day it shuddered in all gears - just one day, confuses me

Aug 4th is my appt ... we'll see...

I had been worried that w/ such low mileage the problem would pop up after warranty (Sept '21)

Sooo, if you can call it lucky.... here we go.... new transfer case

Putting in a defective part to replace the same defective part. Think back to GM with their ignition switch issue. A contractor discovered the issue. The CEO was called up on the Hill to get her butt reamed. The correct part was manufactured and distributed. GM's oh-oh moment? They used the same part number for the replacement switch as the original....

So I too have the “Macan Stumble”.....went to the dealer and they said they start with changing out the transfer case fluid and adding a ”friction modifier” which may fix the situation......all to the tune of 450 bucks.........but guess what.......it is still doing it.....the “Macan Stumble” is a little more subdued after the change....but still there and definitely still noticeable........will be taking it back in.....any suggestions.....beside asking for a refund for the “fluid change” which did not remedy the situation.....should I at this point push for the replacement.....was surprised they decided to go this route and not just change it out since it seems to be a widespread issue.....

So here is my “quick” take...

Mine is still there as well. I believe it to be a ECU and/or PDK programming issue. If I reset the ECU via my Cobb, many times, the stumble seems to “disappear”for awhile... then, it (slowly) comes back. I think there is a programming issue somewhere in one of those two items... and when the right driving patterns emerge, the problem rears its head.

...again... just my conclusion after dealing with it for two years and reading about “Porsche stumbles” across the Internet in that time.

I had the same problem on my 2015 Macan S. I had a mechanic change the transfer case fluid ($120) but still had the problem. Brought it in to the local Porsche dealer and told him about the TSB / design flaw issue on the transfer case. The guy didn't blink, immediately changed the transfer case at no cost, problem has disappeared. If they give you trouble just mention that Porsche North America covers this 100% as it's a design flaw (I believe they changed the transfer case for 2017+ models, precisely because of this - from what I've read, condensation builds up in the transfer case and this causes the hiccups when accelerating). I don't have any extended warranty. Be aware that there are a couple of other recalls as well, which they should address, and on top of that, there's an issue with the steering column (middle?) shaft which makes the steering wheel creak when you move it side to side, which they should replace but my guy refused to do it, saying that all they can do is lubricate it. Make sure they actually remove the shaft when they lubricate it, and they do it with the shaft standing up, not laying down, otherwise you'll be back there in no time... Good luck.

Recently purchased a 2017 Macan S and took it to the dealership for some software update (they couldn't even tell me what it was for but they performed it for free out of warranty) - when there I had them print out the service records and noticed the previous owner had it in for the transfer case looks like they charged him $341 for a friction additive and it stated that it would likely need to be replaced. When I asked my SA about it she said they had recently extended the warranty on transfer cases and not to worry, they ended up dropping of a new 2020 cayenne taking the Macan in swapping it for free and dropping it back off the next day.

I also had the bolts replaced on the timing cover but I will post that info in the oil leak thread that still appears to be active.

Yup I know...bolts replaced is accurate. I posted the info in the below thread...

"What is the issue?
On Model Year 2014 to 2018 Porsche Macan the Transfer Case long term durability may be below Porsche’s high quality standards.

Chalk up another transfer case replacement.
The work was done on Wednesday, but after playing phone-tag with service, I just picked it up this morning (Friday).
Runs like a champ. Part number ends with "AX" -- I have just under 23k miles on my 2017
(Edit to report that I had a 2020 Cayenne loaner: felt like I was driving the Queen Mary--waaaay to big for my purposes, but the interior was quite comfy)

Just wanted to alert everyone. My Macan GTS has been with the Dealership since 8/27. Apparently between ordering parts, getting approvals and finding technicians who know how to install a Transfer Case, my car remains with Porsche Service. I find this highly unusual and feel a sense of need to sell my vehicle once it is returned. I was very lucky that an Indy shop found the oil leak 2 weeks before my warranty expired. Although the Transfer Case will be under a new service warranty for 7 yrs I am suspect on what the rest of the car holds in surprise maintenance costs. I checked to see about extended warranties and estimates are $6-$7K for an additional 50K miles. Not worth it as that money could be placed on a new vehicle or CPO vehicle. Wanted the thoughts, experience, of others and thought I would share my dilemma with you.

I have a newly acquired 2017 macan S. New car warranty expired end of June. With 38,000 miles, I had the full monty of a transfer case replacement, and then an oil leak in the front end, plus some minor electrical glitches involving the three, cigarette lighter power ports. Replaced fuses, etc. Took about three weeks in June. Local dealership (in Tucson, AZ) did all of the work at no charge. Delays caused by needing to get parts from Germany. I got an after market warranty from Car Shield. for up to 125,000 miles. Cost me about $4400. Was quoted as high as $7000. Shop carefully. I previously owned a 1983 911 SC and a 1988 Carrera. I love the Macan S. Worth the risk at this point. I'm keeping it. With recent cut-backs on travel, this my be my last car. I'm old.

I had my transfer case replaced before the recall and out of warranty and Porsche picked up the bill. Also, it took maybe 3 hours for my dealer to get the job done. I guess you need to find another dealer and not another car.

As for extended warranty, those prices seems way too high. Even my Porsche dealer quoted me warranties way cheaper than that although I decided to keep my Geico MBI.

Thanks for the reply and your thoughts. FYI Porsche cannot provide extended warranties on cars that are already out of warranty. Second it is impossible to replace transfer case in 3hours as it entails removing the entire engine block. Geico does not provide extended warranties on these car models in my State any way. Carshield, Carchex, Liberty Bell are top contenders. But thanks any way. Best
