Speedometer Display

Today I test drove the Macan S; it was the first time I had ever driven a Porsche. I was terribly disappointed that the largest central gage is the most useless for everyday driving and that the most important gage, the speedometer, is virtually useless with its tiny scaled analog gage off to the left....I couldn't tell my speed at all...can anyone please help me out and let me know if I am missing something here.

Mine reads 2 mph higher at 75 mph. I tested it with an accurate GPS. That's 2.7% higher.

There are very very few inaccurate GPS's :)

I recall on older cars, one could (and actually had to) change the gears when one changed tire sizes. One would rationally think that there is an electronic equivalent in the car where Porsche can adjust the speedometer to match the tires. The 18,19,20,21 tires all have a different circumference (even though the sidewall gets smaller on the larger rims) so the "default" would inherently cause speedometer error on all the other sized tires.

Is this adjustable by the Porsche dealer, even if it's not by us mere mortals.

I like the concept of the Tachometer in the middle....when stopped by the police, I can say "oh, I just realized that the dial in the middle that said 45 is showing me the engine speed....not the car speed. Darn those Germans"

Yes, as someone mentioned before, Porsche's history. Most recently, they have added a digital display for speed within the tach...

I'm attaching an annotated photo for your convenience. Everything you need is conveniently located in that central tachometer.

As far as I'm aware all cars I've owned have read high on the speedometer, this includes non German cars too. I'm pretty certain it's so manufacturers can't be blamed for speeding tickets!
I've driven to GPS speed for a long time now because of this and can pull away from other traffic, even when being followed by police using this instead of the speedometer.

Speedometer? why do you have to look at it when driving a Porsche? Eyes on the road please - for the safety of others and you.

I couldn't care less for the speedometer in a Porsche. I LOVE the tachometer in the center since it screams sport car all over it. BTW, that is how the Ferrari is. On my Macan I set the 2 speed limits to 65mph and 75mph. That is 5 mph above most of the highways I drive here. When the alarm beeps I know I am 5mph above the limit and then I pay attention on the digital speedometer. That is more than enough for me.

We are all idiots here but no one would date to admit. :(

So when was the last time you viewed this dial ?

Reading the analogue speed-o-meter ? It's been a while for me ...

Perhaps it should just be made another multi function screen with a virtual analogue speed-o-meter as one of the options ?

Could not agree with you more.

I like to drive with the steering wheel fully lowered in my lap and not telescoped at all (as far away from me as possible), and I can't see the analog speedometer needle.

So yes at least in my case they could do something better with that piece of real estate on the instrument panel.

Now what I would REALLY like is to have the instrument panel move up and down with the steering wheel, a la 928! Of course the chances of that are less than getting an HUD. And I would not complain if they gave us the Porsche version of the Audi virtual cockpit.

I agree with what others have said here about the speedometer on the left being useless and rarely ever looked at by any Porsche drivers -- given the large digital speed read-out on the bottom of the tachometer. And I agree what others have said about the real need for Porsche to nix the speedometer gauge and put a useful display there that the driver can optionally build. The speedometer gauge is one of the biggest head-scratchers in all Porsches...

So the key/fob is on the left hand side of the steering column as homage to racing heritage of Le Mans. What other homage is there in the macan line?

porsche shield on center caps point faces the valve stem

any others?

Hope this is the correct threat. The "home screen: on my 2017 Macan displays the photograph below. I figured out that the 88 degrees (yellow arrow) displays the degrees from North. (example 180 degrees from north would be south) Not sure under what conditions that information would be helpful to me. (smile).
What I don't understand is the "100 ft." display (white arrow). It seems to fluctuate to various distances as I drive. I am sure its probably useless but I am curious as to its meaning. Any help appreciated. Thanks

Looks like there is a graphic of mountains next to it, so my guess is elevation.

I've just upgraded from a 2015 S to a 2021 GTS. In the S, anytime I was on a main road, it displayed the speed limit on the multi-purpose display. On the GTS, I've gone through every menu but I'm stumped. I can't find any way to activate this. I found an old thread on here saying to activate this under Settings > Display > PCM Display, but.. there is no option for speed limit there. I've already traded in the S so I can't compare side by side. Please tell me this great feature is still available on the newer cars?

Not sure if it's the same for the Macan & Cayenne, but my 2016 Macan had the speed limit on the multi-function display. The Cayenne requires some additional option for the speed limit to show. My Cayenne does not have that feature, so no option for that on the dash.

I just realized I have a speedometer. Perhaps the most useless gauge/function of the Macan. I really only notice or monitor speed with the digital indicator in the bottom of the tach. That entire left gauge pot is really only to display current kilometers and trip miles. Seems like a massive waste of space.

This has been covered before. There is another discussion on the dashboard design and the useless speedometer.
As I have said before. The most important dial on a race vehicle is the tachometer. The most important dial on a street vehicle is the speedometer.
The Macan is a street vehicle.
I could live with the tachometer in its present position if Porsche at least had the foresight to make the digital speedometer larger and place it at the top of the tachometer instead of the bottom.
