Thule Hyper XL on AeroBlade cross-bars. The rear hatch opens fully with the box biased fully rearward.

I took my family of 4 including two 6' boys in the back seat skiing for a few days. This included a 4 hour drive with skis, snowboards, and luggage for 3 nights in a hotel. The Macan was a perfect transport vehicle with just enough cargo space including the box. I would not want anything bigger!

Nice set up! Have a similar set up on ours with Thule Aeroblades and Hyper XL box I transferred over from our Audi and then added a Podium fit kit. The size of box is great for longer boards and duffel bags. I positioned the box as far back a possible to clear the hatch when opened in an attempt to minimize wind noise - which isn't bad.

Road tripping in the morning up to BC for a cat ski trip next week in the Red Sled and looking forward to the drive almost as much as the skiing.

Already thinking ahead for our December trip to Breckenridge, and looking through these posts. So far, my conclusion is that Thule Aeroblade Edge cross-bar will work with the factory rails. Now, the box I am leaning toward is the Porsche Box 520, and taking a closer look, they look exactly like Thule Hyper XL, anybody can confirm if they're indeed the same box? We will need to transport 3 sets of skis and one snowboard, preferably with spaces left over to cram boots, helmets and other small stuff. Any suggestions or comments?

You just wax the car prior to taking those pictures? Nice job, nice wax.

I can't even imagine the wind noise and drag that thing creates while driving...oh well, to each their own.
Sometimes you just need the extra room.

I have a Thule box and crossbars for my Camry. We used it a couple of times, driving from NY to the NC shore, to carry beach and cooking and reading ... supplies for a week in a beachfront house, with kids. Sure, that even bigger box is not aerodynamic, etc., but renting a mini-van or a trailer is even more expensive.

As you imply, not for everyone, and as I said, we use it rarely, but sometimes, for some trips, those top boxes seem -- to me -- to be an optimum solution. Certainly the cat's meow for a passel of skis on a weekend family jaunt (I used to ski, in younger days).

I got the roof rails when ordering our Macan, and also included the official Porsche cross-bars with that order. When the time comes that a box will be appropriate for some trip, I'll buy one of those, too, either from Porsche or Thule.

Thats why i didn't order the roof rails and ordered the trailer hitch. Thats where I stow skis, etc. Back in the day when i had a Yukon with rails and racks it was so noisy and cumbersome getting stuff on/off the rack that I decided that a trailer hitch with box/rack was far superior then a roof rack/box

I was exactly looking for this. I am expecting my 2019 Macan (also with OEM bars) in 2 weeks and looking to buy either a Thule Motion XL or Thule Force XL. Can I ask you one favor, no one seems to know;

Did you need to buy T-Track adapters from Thule to fix the box? Some sites seem to say so.

Can you still open the rear lid fully?

Many thanks!

Thule Motion XT L sitting on OEM Porsche crossbars. I de-badged all the Thule stickers. It's looks great and I think the size is perfect for the Macan (IMO).

Don't think so. Thule uses an extra wide "PowerClick" quick-mount system that clamps around the cross bar. Inside the box are are 4 knobs with integrated torque indicator that “clicks” when it’s properly tightened. Looks like the Motion & Force use the same quick mount system as the Hyper XL.

The Hyper XL is 90" L and I have the bars mounted as far back as possible to minimize wind noise and am able to fully open the hatch.

Anyone have the Yakima Skybox? Just bought OEM crossbars and looking for a roof cargo box to carry skis/snowboards for winter and camping gears for Spring/Summer. What’s the longest length we can fit on our Macans while minimizing noise and opening the rear hatch?

You will find that the ski boxes will slide to fit the hatch opening need. The most important need is to size your box to what your real needs are. If you get too big of a box, like I did, the mileage suffers big time. Throw a chunk of carpet inside for the gear to rest on. The other consideration about the choice of your ski box is the quality of it, especially the locks. Pack a small blow torch to unfreeze the locks. On the other hand they are so much better than ski racks that all of them are great.

Thule Motion XT Large on Thule Aeroblade Edge bars - awesome setup

Perfect size for the Macan although I know some people have done the XL and been just fine

I did a short write up with more pics if you do a quick search

i’d like to be able to carry more than one passenger. On the last few ski and camping trips since January, I couldn’t carry more than one with the gear. Figured I could put some stuff on the roof and have the rear seats up. Don’t need to carry more than 4 pairs of skis/boards and just stuff like backpacks and such on any given trip. Hence I wasn’t sure if the Thule Motion XL is too big or if the Yakima SkyBox 16 is too small (maybe 21?). Wanted to get some thoughts from folks on here.
