Anyone have a definitive answer regarding the potential complications caused by replacing the Macan battery yourself and not keeping the car powered up while doing so?

Does a replacement battery for a Macan need to be “registered” as is required in many recent BMW products?

Yes. I have been told that, unless the new battery is exactly the same as the one being replaced, it needs to be "sync'd" or "registered" to the vehicle. Keeping another battery in parallel (e.g., a 9v battery connected via a power outlet) will just allow the various personal settings like radio stations, etc. to be saved.

Maybe a 95 AH or even a 105 Ah if it is the right size.

I wonder if I hooked up my CTEK battery charger to the 12 V power supply & then swapped old with new battery... if that would be the way to "trick the car" into not "knowing" that the battery had been changed.

Hopefully, by the time I need a new battery, others here will have DIY procedures & tips.

Yes, I know there are many who just take it to the dealer for every single thing. Luckily, there are some knowledgable members here.

I'm hoping I can get at least 4 years from my battery.

If your described CTEK Extracorporeal Electrical System Life Support maneuver works for the battery swap, you are officially my new hero. Im going to call it CEESLS for short. :nerd:

CTEK 7002 has battery preserve mode so you don't lose your settings

BTW, of course the alternator charges the battery. It cannot charge a dead battery but it will, over time, "top off" a battery. This is why you don't go drive for 20 mins in the winter and expect the battery to be charged. You got to drive the car every day for some distance or put it on a tender some of the time. If the alternator didn't charge the battery a little, then it would continuously discharge until dead.

Beware that AGM charges at 14.7 not 14.3V. PIWIS must be hooked up. The days of DIY are long gone. Energy mgmt system is complicated. At least for the 911, and I presume all AGM Porsches with start/stop, Maps needs to be reset to tell the condition of the battery. They want to know the details of the battery. It also does some regenerative braking, besides the alternator. They recoup energy when braking (not the same thing as KERS in racing but sounds similar).

Sounds suspiciously like what BMW terms "registering" a new battery.

With BMW it wants to know whenever you replace the battery, what AH rating the battery is, and if it's AGM or not...because the charging strategy varies depending on the age, the capacity and the type of battery.

At least with BMW the cost for the equipment/software to register a new battery is nominal. Wonder if my Durametric has the capability to do this on my Macan?

When I replaced the battery in the 996 a couple of years ago, I used the same procedure as I would have on any car 30 years ago...disconnect, remove, install and reconnect the replacement :) Grim, any idea if I missed something, or is the 996 old enough that none of this applies? :)

I doubt it but don't know for a fact.

Yes, I believe 996 is not relevant to this. Tech trickles down from the 911 to the other models. Notice how the 911 change comes first, then the other models? For examples, LED headlight were in the 991 first, then 981 later. Much of this might be attributed to the start/stop tech requiring AGM batteries. It wants to know stuff like who makes it, capacity, and more detailed info. I doubt the 996/986 models needed this.

Varta also looks like a good option.......but I don’t know if that is easy to buy in the USA or Canada.

I hadn't thought of that! I had just taken pix of my battery last year, & discovered it was a VARTA brand & found their website & saw that they had equivalent batteries for future replacement & didn't bother checking to see WHERE I could eventually purchase one, LOL.

So, now 2 future issues: what batteries are available for me to purchase in the USA to replace my Varta, & can I DIY w/o screwing up my car?

There is no way it s/b difficult to replace this battery! Unless it is designed that way to force a visit to the dealer.

Most people will not (or cannot) ship batteries due to the safety risk.
