Replacing & Registering the Battery

Hopefully I will not need to do this for 3-4 years but I’m curious. Manual p. 314 says only have done by Porsche dealer & you cannot tell what type of (aftermarket) battery will replace the genuine Porsche battery by the markings on the battery. WTF?!

I like Interstate brand. Often better quality than OEM but, that is for lead acid, not sure for AGM.

So, has anyone here had to replace their battery & did you have Porsche do it & what did it cost you?

I finally took a look at my battery which is under the trunk floor in front of the Bose SubW (After lift the cargo floor, must lift carpet & then lift another cover to view & if need to access/change it--would need to remove collapsible spare tire!)

I see mine is 92Ah.

I searched & found Gaudin Porsche offers two; a 92Ah & a more powerful 105 Ah.

958-611-105-21
BATTERY 105 AMP HOUR MSRP $543.76, online price $351.05
Replaces:958-611-105-20

958-611-092-21
BATTERY 92 AMP HOUR MSRP $439.44, online price $283.70
Replaces: 7PP-915-105, 955-611-085-00, 955-611-092-00, 958-611-092-20

So, if you wanted the same battery you have now you’d get the 92Ah for $283.70.
My guess is that to have Porsche replace it for you you’d pay MSRP $439.44 + ½ hr. Labor! ~$500 to replace a @#$!!** battery?!

For Lead Acid batteries, you just need the dimensions to fit the space & the correct Ah & then it is reliability, price, warranty & specs such as CCA. How can it be that much different for AGM types? If, for example, Interstate made one to fit Macan that was the same size with more Ah for ~ $150 it would be tempting. For now, until I learn that aftermarket brands are available & work well, I’d probably upgrade to the genuine Porsche 105 AH & DIY.

Iconoclast, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Here is a screen shot. Seems the number you need for the serial number is the last one you mention starting with 205 - respect the spacing and ALL LETTERS ARE IN CAPITALS. I hope that helps

Thanks! Hard to see with that screen shot.

If I leave spaces:
2 ∅5 JCB 2F71179 ∅

Seems to now be 18 digits.

2 ∅5 JCB 2F71179 ∅
14 digits + 4 spaces.

I have read discussions in various forums about what the iCarsoft POR V2.0 device is able to do on a Macan and what not. I can provide concrete answers to two points:

1) BMS (Battery Management System): registration of a new battery. In the delivery state of the iCarsoft device, BMS did not work on my Macan S (Diesel, 2014). After the German vendor played dumb, I wrote directly to the manufacturer in the US. After more than a month of email exchange and five software versions I had to test, the latest version (11.23) finally worked. Important in this context: the device must be operated in English language! If the menu is changed to other languages (e.g. German), BMS does not work.

2) DPF (diesel particle filter) regeneration. Original language of the manufacturer: "I'm sorry to tell you that POR V2.0 can't support DPF on Macan yet. We are still working on it."

I hope that this will help all those who are interested in this device. If you have other, additional or contradictory experiences with the iCaroft POR V2.0 device, please feel free to add to this thread.

Cheers from Austria,
Andi

Thank you Andi. Regarding the BMS battery registration, did you actually register a new battery? If so, was it a Porsche battery or from another manufacturer with a label providing the serial # etc. needed for registration.

Thanks

I can understand that the Serial Number tells the Techs (if they didn't already know by looking at it) what battery it is and perhaps other info like year of build etc. As far as I was able to determine through my Porsche contacts the Part number is derived by VIN (and I assume ergo year) and when I had my system shutdown due to battery failure in January, I was told by Porsche Gold Tech to enter Porsche Part Number: 958-611-092-21.

I don't know what year your Macan is and if this is a new twist for the 2020's. So whilst I can readily accept a nonsensical serial number (why would it need two positions - 11 and 15) for number of battery changes, I'm not sure about what impact the Part Number has. My only guess is that since we can't get Varta batteries in the US it provides a method of acceptance of other manufacturers. Just a thought,

My 2017 Macan S needs battery replacement.
I am doing myself and if I change it out and reconnect the battery will I get errors or have any
Problems? Please facts from those DIYers.
You truly need to start from the beginning and read every post. This is not as simple as it should be like heading to Costco. This battery replacement has to be REGISTERED using the PIWIS gizmo that only Porsche dealers and really good independants can afford to have. So this boxes you in for choices on what to do. Trying to use another gizmo for registration seems to be iffy.

Just go to Costco and get a $140 Interstate H8 battery. Swap it in and be done with it. If battery prematurely fails, get a replacement one from Costco with no questions asked.

I personally had a free replacement battery from Costco for my Lexus within 2 or 3 years of the initial purchase.

@Caseymacan,
You may want to maintain 12V power during the battery swap. So the Macan computer "does not know" you changed the battery.

Some battery tenders can do this such as CTEK 7002 which has a supply setting.
I plan to use a portable jump starter (JNC 770)
If you have a spare car battery laying around, you can use that.
I've seen small devices, using a 9V battery, plugged into a 12V outlet but have read about mixed results.

IDK what happens if the Macan is w/o power for several minutes. I'm guessing it is not ideal.

I think out of power doesn’t automatically mean a battery change. Battery can be disconnected for any reason.

Why do Porsche Techs maintain 12V supply when THEY swap out the Macan battery?

I didn't abuse it and I have never abused such policies at any store.

My point was I don't believe battery would die prematurely without registration. It's a pain in the butt to replace a heavy battery even it is free.

My battery is toast and needs to replaced. Also, my front passanger headlight has a small crack I noticed the other day. It works fine just has a crack. I sent my car to Porsche dealership and they wanted to charge $2,600 to replace the passanger light and $950 to replace battery. I was shocked on the battery.. I mean what the ****.

I looked at NTB, Pepboys, Autozone etc and none have a 2015 Macan S battery. Any suggestions to replace myself.... am I missing something.. it is a batery in the trunk... take out tire and unplug battery and replace, put back tire and seal up... right? Where can I get a battery?

I am looking on ebay for a replacement passenger light. How hard is that to replace? If complicated I may just file an insurance claim to get it replaced because new ones cost a fortune and if hard to install I will let insurance company handle it.

Any help is appreciated.

What you want to do is read through this 31-page thread on replacing the battery -- whether any battery will do, whether you have to register it, why the whole process costs so much -- and you will then be as up in the air as the rest of us (but you will learn about the various intricacies involved -- you will become well-educated in the matter -- even if no clear consensus has emerged):

Besides replacing the battery, you need to have a computer to program the battery to work with the car.

So can more than two of us agree, that as of today, the Autel MD808 Pro is the "best buy" scanner to purchase? Have two P-cars that are flashing"Oil Change now," but want battery, and service, and brakes capability.
I'm ready to pull the trigger! Thanks!!

PS BTW since I also work on my RS5 (until I can sell it), a couple of Touaregs, the Macan and a friend's Q7 this analyzer covers them all. Plus it's wireless so I don't have to drag a cable between a PC and the OBD2 connector. Your first trip to the dealer will tell you what a bargain this is.
