MY 17+ Apple CarPlay retrofit

Last Thursday evening I left my tiger at the dealership I bought it from to have Apple CarPlay and S+ retrofitted, now that both upgrades have officially been released.

Yesterday I picked it up in the afternoon, and it all works nicely. We had a brief scare when my phone would not bring CarPlay up on the PCM display, but we finally figured out that it was an issue with my (non-Apple) cable. We used a Porsche lightning cable (which I had also bought during my visit at the dealership) and it worked wonderfully, for anyone interested. Just be aware that this retrofit is just adding the Apple CarPlay functionality; it's not (or in my case it has not been) a full Connect retrofit. The Sport Plus button also does what it's supposed to do, and the retrofit also adds the SC screens on the main display and on the MFD. At the same time they also updated the PCM software to the newest release; very nice of them.

Whereas CarPlay is very nice and useful, the S+ button just transforms the car. I think I have mentioned a couple of times that in my GTS I was missing that kick in the back I had experienced when testing the turbo back in the day before buying the GTS sight unseen, and I thought it was down to the additional displacement, horsepower and torque, but now with S+ I also feel that kick on acceleration when PDK shifts gears, and even if the car may not be much faster, it definitely feels faster; totally another beast. I start to understand those who say that once you try S+, Sport becomes the new "normal".

For the sake of completeness of my report, I had a pretty well optioned Macan S as a loaner (full black leather, SC, pano roof, PSE...), and my salesman is such a nice person that he left me a little note with a chocolate to "sweeten up my pitstop", as he wrote. Talk about customer service!

Pics or it didn't happen? Of course it did happen :)

In the other thread some have it said it makes the PSE louder. On the Porsche website it makes no mention of this, and it wouldnt make much sense it if did (bypass is open or closed). Though maybe the more agressive throttle response makes it seem louder...

I do hear a noticeable PSE sound difference in S+ under full acceleration, not on idle.

BTW, I see that you too opted for the Aluminum Sports PDK shifter. I think it is really nice and love mine :D

To get CarPlay from Porsche on a MY16 you have to replace the PCM with the MY17 PCM. The upgrade is available from Suncoast but it ain't cheep.

I was under the impression that CarPlay can only be added when ordering the vehicle with Connect or Connect Plus.

What does the retrofit involve? Is it just a (paid) software update, or is there any additional hardware installed by the dealer?

Does anyone know if this retrofit is available in the US and what the approximate cost is?

OK, the definitive answer from PCNA is that there is no ability to upgrade the PCM from 3.1 to 4.0. In addition, there is currently no way to retrofit voice control.
I don't know what I saw before, but I apologize for the misinformation.

I just looked and couldn't find it either. I'm pretty sure I had seen it a few months ago, but I could be mistaken. I would give them a call tomorrow.

I see the sports + upgrade...but like others see no upgrade to add connect or replace an older pcm with pcm 4
The dealer didn't add Connect; just CarPlay. When I get the invoice I'll be able to tell the part# (if shown on the bill). According to the dealer, CarPlay as a retrofit is officially available since December, so if someone having a car with PCM 4 is interested, I'd just give a call to the Porsche dealership.

Siri activated directions and navigation a lot. If I get a text message, Siri reads it for me and asks me to reply, which I mostly do. Of course, cell phone calling and answering. When calling I invoke my iPhone contact list using Siri. If there is more than one phone number for a contact, Siri asks and you chose by answering.

The stalk and the button were already there; my car has voice control since the beginning. Now the button calls up Siri when the phone is connected.

I won't see the part price since I won't be paying for it; it will appear as a zero-value line on the invoice (which I didn't receive yet).

so your car already had navigation with feature QH1......and Porsche allowed you to upgrade it to add carplay. If it's a n/c upgrade then anyone with navigation and voice should be able to get it...at N/C, I would think.

This is getting very interesting....although you are in Geneva and we are in the US.

Need part number....when you get it.

I am also interested in this as well since I only have Navigation on my GTS but would be interested in adding just Carplay (and S+ at the same time), since I don't need nor want the other Connect + features!

The more I read about it the more I come to realize its just better if you are in Auto mode. If you drive in manual mode, I guess nothing changes.

My S4 has a "sport" auto mode which downshifted for you at high revs, kept gears longer, etc. I never used it period. If im driving spirited, I'm in manual. If I'm being lazy then auto. There is no intersection between spirited and auto mode for me.

I was on the fence about SC but after driving between Sport and Sport Plus on the test drive I felt the same way you do.

It really does make a difference overall, and to buy the sportiest SUV on the market and not get it doesn't make sense, luckily you were able to get it after delivery!!

I also decided to go PTV+ for the quicker steering response. That was a last minute call and the SA told me it was pretty much the last day I had to change my build!

Please be a little careful (if you are in considering adding this to a US car)

it's not clear that this includes SIRI activation from the voice control button because you don't have a voice control button if you don't have feature QH1 on your car...and it's not standard with nav in the US. The description on suncoast asks if you have nav or not...and if you don't there's an additional $95 charge. That may be for the button to activate SIRI. You aren't charged that $95 if you have nav....so the assumption might be that you have the button already (which you don't). It's also not clear that even if you get the button, it still may not work if you don't also have QH1 voice. I'd ask a lot of questions before ordering...or wait for someone to install the kit and then ask them lots of questions about what they had installed prior to adding the kit.

Also interesting to note...there is still no way to add voice to a car with nav built without QH1.....however perversely, if you don't have nav, you can now order the add on kit which seems to include QH1 Voice!!!

It's all very confusing.....
