License Plate Frames

I thought I'd start a thread on license plate frame options. I think one or two people have pictures of their Macans with license frames installed. But, I don't know if they got a genuine Porsche, or aftermarket, or which one. For example I can't find one on the Porsche site that is specifically listed for the Macan. Will one of Porsche's generic frames that just says "Porsche" work? Do people know of good quality frames that say nothing? Maybe just a simple chrome or black frame will do. I just want to move beyond the bare license plate screwed to the car and am wondering what others have found.

I would not pick up a generic Porsche plate that says Porsche. You know what you bought.

Simple but elegant

Weathertech makes a gorgeous but expensive one. $150 a piece

Griot sells several kinds, one is CF

I bought Camisca concours collection Stainless Steel and Carbon Fiber License Plate Frames

Different states are touchy about plate frames. Some require nothing touching the front of the plate, like plastic. Some do not want that thick bottom but a simple but elegant thin frame.

Yes, I researched this quite a bit. Here is one of the more recent RL threads on this http://rennlist.com/forums/991/806394-license-plate-frame-recommendation.html

I could not justify $300 for two weathertech frames which are really nice but the Camisca ones are fine.

Thanks.

One thing I've noticed is that the plain slimline plates on the Porsche site that say nothing (my preference too) come up with no picture and a price of zero. That makes me wonder if Porsche doesn't sell theirs any more.

I'll go check out Griots. I'm about to order a couple of things from them and didn't realize they had license plate frames. I'm checking out Camisca right now.

Actually, I just ordered the Camisca frames. Thanks again.

Are there any places that do high quality custom engraved frames? I'd like a nicer version of this:

I live in Texas and I have the Porsche Stainless frame. Says "Porsche" on the bottom edge. Looks good with the brush stainless tail pipes. Macan S Black metallic with black leather interior, 19" Macan turbo wheels.

@whoosh , what are you running for a front plate? I am still going plate-less in the front until I find a good solution to mounting it.

What are you guys running for the license plates? Naked - nothing but the State plate or a nice license plate frame? Would love to see some ideas for both the front and rear plates. I am thinking either a black Macan plate or perhaps carbon fiber to match the side blades.

Thanks!

shaunmed- what is that?

Sometimes i see people drive around (CA) with a really thin and wide plate, and then on top of it is the regular CA plate.

What does that mean? Are those cars that were purchased with some sort of european delivery option and the person didnt take the european plates off or something?

The ones you see are most likely a BMW/AUDI driver who took European delivery. Then left the German plates on the car with the Ca license on top.
Often they dont put the Ca plate in front and will be running German in front and Ca on top of German in the back.

At least that is what I run into here in the Bay Area.

Not that I really get it though..

I am liking those ones that go on top to protect the plate and keep it nice and clean. I think they are advertised as photo radar plates ;)

Unfortunately, those are now illegal in California.

I just don't run with the front plate even though it's required down here. It just takes away from the nice front end. I keep it in the rear cargo area and will just tell them it was loose so I had to take it off. If I did put the plate on I would have a nice thin chrome metal frame to go with the window trim and wheels. I just kept the frame from my local P dealership on the rear...for now.

I didn't run with a front plate on any of my Corvettes too!

Currently, Indiana has suspended its vanity plate program. Found places on google where I can order a European front plate with custom letters. Have to go for "SPIELZEUG"...

On the rear, it'll probably be a plain black border, to go with agate grey/black trim on the car.

I've yet to find a plate frame I like for me yet. So for now I just mounted a black plate frame upside down behind the plate. The sides of the frame cover the edge of the plate all around and I think it finishes the edge of the plate nicely to match the black part of the bumper.

Found this while searching for folks' views on vanity plates. Are you guys generally for or against?

#20 ·
Generally against, if only so that the car is less prone to be remembered. For example, someone complaining about a white/black car driving aggressively could be anyone. Someone complaining about a car driving aggressively with "I LUV LA" is a little more difficult to explain away.

I'm generally against, but have one. Note mine is less obvious but it is meaningful and relates to my alma mater. Plate is the alma mater plate and first three characters are month alpha and year numeric (MYY) that started school and the last three are MYY of when I finished. For example S05 J09 (for Sep 2005 to June 2009) - not mine but an example.

Ambivalent, and opposed.

Ambivalent when it's '85 - 911, or 77VETTE.

But opposed when it's HOTLPS, SXYVGN, REDNCK, etc.

Was even thinking about MY - CAHN for a bit and then my wife rolled her eyes at me.

I took my Euro plates off at the factory and will run with them for a couple of months for the fun of it and then put the CA plates on. Seems exceedingly lame to have two plates, Euro and State, but each to his own!

I run my Cayman S with no front plate and when driving that car I cannot park in places like Beverly Hills on the street bcuz I always get a fine. For my daily driver Macan I don't want the hassle of no front plate. Front plate does not look as bad on a Macan than a Cayman. For the Cayman it really takes away from the front end for me!
