Heat and noise insulating glass option - Worth it?

Do you think that this option is worth it? Especially considering it comes standard with the below. $2,500 plus LCT
"Air conditioning
Tinted heat-insulating glass all around with grey top-tint in windscreen"

Is the optioned glass Solar Attenuating Glass or something to justify.

In the US the rear glass is tinted ("privacy") whether one orders the option or not . I recall reading it might not be that way everywhere . With that in mind the confugurator makes the option look attractive because if the entire car were not tinted it would look like one off those vans where you see all the people. That confusion swath the configurator led me to put the option on my first two Macans and in hindsight I felt it was 2K (in total) thrown out those tinted windows .

I really don't understand your comment. My wife and I have been using our Macan S, with the thermal and noise reducing glass, for three and a half years now, and we haven't noticed the violet. Maybe we're just not observant, or maybe it's a polarizing sunglasses thing, or something I don't understand. In any case, no complaints from us; we got the glass for its sound-deadening properties, and that has seemed to work for us.

@studio, take a look at the first and last few pics in my gallery (link in signature block, below), to see some pics of the tinted areas.

For my second GTS I did spring for the fancy glass. For both of my cars i did have the windows tinted a little darker and the front to match the back When i had the PPF put on.

.....I wonder if anyone would know the ordering code for what the UK/EU site describes as "Acoustic Insulated Laminated Glass". This would be my preferred option because I don't want to have any tinted or "privacy glass".....
The code for the non-privacy insulated glass is VW5. You can find this by searching for the Porsche UK website, and using their configurator, and then looking at the build summary page.

Will be interesting to hear if you are able to special order that glass for your region.

Understanding that VW5 (non-privacy/non-tinted) insulation glass is not available in US/Canada (where we only get the tinted VW6 option), is it possible to do a special order with Porsche? For example, for a fee of about $500 BMW could place a special orders of items not available in the regular configuration (e.g. tinted glass, headliner colour, etc.).

....is it possible to do a special order with Porsche?....
Good question. I don't think we've seen an example of this yet for the Macan. I can recall a handful of members who tried requesting a special option, only to be told it wasn't possible.

Of course, there is a paint-to-sample program, and you can order unique interior colors through Porsche Exclusive. But things like glass might require regulatory approval for each county. If so, and if the VW5 glass has not been through the approval process for use in Canada, then it might not be possible even if Porsche was open to doing a special build.

If you don't get anywhere with your dealership contacts, you can try talking to the folks at Porsche Exclusive. Here's a link to their Porsche webpage, and a link to their brochure.....

Worth pursuing further, and seeing what (if anything) can be done. Best of luck, and let us know what you find out. (y)

Sorry, but I have another question: Given that VW6 (or VW5 in UK/EU) are options that one can choose not to select, then there is a standard non-insulated glass. Does this standard glass comes with a dark tint in the rear windows? Could anyone who has standard non-insulated glass post a picture to see the look? Thanks! :)

For the North American market, privacy glass is standard. So this is a good question for UK and European members, where the standard glass is non-tinted, and non-insulated.

You might also look through the member's gallery of the UK Macan Forum for some examples.....

Members Gallery - Porsche Macan Forums

I took a quick look through their gallery, but mostly found examples with either privacy glass, or an aftermarket tint.

So far, this is the only decent picture I've found showing the standard non-tinted glass:

If you are thinking about trying to order your car with the standard non-tinted glass, I'm sorry to report that has already been tried without success.....although it never hurts to try again. See the following thread.....

Is dark tint on rear windows mandatory?

I like reading this thread over again as it has good information on making a choice on this option so here are a few insights from someone who does not have it on a Macan but have it on the Cayenne.

  • I cannot comment on the radar detector or transponder for pay roads as I do not have them
  • I do not notice any cell reception difference but I have a sunroof on the Cayenne that has this option and I assume that cell signal comes through that way just fine since sunroof is not affected but this option
  • I can tell that driving our Macan (before tinting) , new loaner Macans, or loaner Cayenne without this option I feel totally blinded by how much light comes through front and side windows. Therefore, on the Macan we tinted front windshield believe it is 80% designed for that application in addition to the side windows to match the rears and immediately it felt comfortable.
  • I decided to add this option to the Cayenne for the purposes of call it "enhanced" reduction road noise and heat rejection because I believe that thicker double pane glass is better than standard single pane glass regardless of the dealer telling me that they do not see or can tell the difference and see it pretty much a waste.
  • I can tell that the glass is reducing noise and heat in the Cayenne but I feel that regular tint would just be as comparable. I did tint the side windows to match the rears and yes that insulation film does give off a purple hue but not overly so or noticeable at all to mess up the matched look of all side windows.
  • I can tell that rear windows do look a bit foggy but in a soft kind of way which I actually like by breaking up direct sunlight.
  • I can tell that when looking at an angle through the windshield (looking right under bright conditions) I can see that the view is a bit distorted because of the film in the middle of the glass. That catches me once on a while but the benefit that I get is that the light coming through the windshield is again best way to say it softened up so it feels more comfortable so as a result I did not have to tint the windshield.
  • The other benefit is that the glass is thicker and feels more solid when you roll up/down windows but not like a big deal.

Bottom line, I would order it again given pros/cons for my needs.

I'm in the process of finalizing my build for the next 2 months. :) My 2016 Macan S has tinted windows on the back for privacy. Is this not standard anymore?

Do I have to check the Thermally & Noise Insulated Glass option? Also, with noise insulated Glass would this reduce engine and exhaust noise?
I found it....Standard. Rear passenger, rear cargo, and rear hatch w/ privacy glass

anyone know if you can add tint without causing issues (cracking) the glass? I would only want to tint to match the front with the rear privacy glass. I ask because home window manufacturers explicitly say not to tint double pane home windows because the heat will get trapped inside the panes and potentially cause cracks.

The insulated glass option uses laminated glass, not double pane. There is no gap inside the glass to trap heat. You can safely tint the front side windows to match the rear.

@MacanAir, this does not seem like a plausible theory for the insulated glass on a car so I would defer to someone who may have done it in climates with constant sun and having their Macan constantly exposed to direct sun for days at a time (simulating stationary house window that would be blasted by sun for days or months at a time). I have insulated glass on the Cayenne and tinted fronts to match the rears but total sun exposure is minimum in case we park somewhere on our trip to Florida in direct sun. Basically, what you have is glass, then film, then glass, then tint so I do not see how heat can trap and crack the glass between tint and glass.

I recently purchased a car that came with Acoustic Glass and wanted to know more. The topic has crept into a number of discussions on this forum over the last couple years and I thought I'd share this, which I found interesting. I am putting this under the "Bodywork" sub-forum. Moderators please move/delete if misplaced or inappropriate.

does the privacy glass in the US/Canada block any heat / UV rays, or is it simply for privacy ?
Do i need to apply a ceramic tint (getting it for the front, and maybe windshield) to get the UV blocking capability.

ps. i don't have thermally and noise-insulated glass ordered from the factory.

The standard windshield is laminated, so it will block UV. However, it will not block IR....which causes most of the heat gain.

The non-insulated privacy glass does not block UV or IR, so you would need to apply an aftermarket tint if you want that protection.

I am considering optioning the Thermally and noise insulated glass incl. privacy glass over the standard Privacy glass on a Macan S.

The main reason for considering this is I am chasing better sun reduction for the little ones in the back. My 2020 Macan S had the factory privacy glass and I still needed to put a sun sock over the window.

I would prefer not to get the mechanical sunblinds as I see these will just get played with.

Does anyone know if this glass upgrade is a bit better at blocking out the sun? From the comparison image on the Porsche configurator, 2 bars out of 3 get through n privacy and only 1 bar out of 3 for the thermally noise enhanced glass.

I know this is expensive for what I am looking for but if it meets this need I get the other benefits too which will be worth it.
