I'm going to be changing out the interior trim in my car. I understand that you have to remove the vents, and then the trim essentially pops out. I found a couple of postings on removing the vents (e.g., like the one below), and I know I need to use the correct tool. But none of the posts provide the details of how to use the tool, and how exactly to get the vents out.

I'm sure I could figure it out. Anyway, if anyone has done this, could you please provide a bit more detail/photos on how to use the tool and do the job?

Thanks!

Online PIWIS system has all this info - https://techinfo2.porsche.com/PAGInfosystem/VFModuleManager?Type=GVOLogin&lk=ELSE
It's not that expensive for an hour access.

Guy in the Youtube video mentioned in the previous post does more than actually needed to remove the vents.

The tool you need - VW 3438
To remove right vent - open the flap using the wheel at the top, put vane tab to the center position, insert the hook into the upper left corner, make sure it's secure against the back of the vent and just pull - no need to remove the vent trim as shown in the video.

Edit: found the info, the 2017+ can play videos from the headunit.

Don't have a Macan yet, but was hoping someone could help confirm some functionality.

Looking to accomplish video in motion like in this thread. My other VIM mods in other cars have always just enabled the factory headunit / screen playing videos even while in motion. Can someone confirm that the Macan head unit does indeed play videos, meaning I won't need an external video player? I

In before watching videos while driving is dangerous. I only play music videos, and I've been doing it for 10+ years without any incidents.

Im sure it’s been ages
But a/c venta located next to each door, driver and passenger, (not the one on the sides of the radio)
They have broken the little plastic blades,
Does anyone know if I can remove them the same way as the middle ones? With the hook pictured in this thread... has anyone done it? Doing it at the dealership is over 700 bucks, the parts are only 200 for both

any help greatly appreciated

You don't need the hook for the side vents that are next to the doors. But you will need a plastic trim tool. You can find them online, and some auto parts stores have them too. Have a look at this video to see how to remove the side vents......

Guys really need your help on this.
I want to replace the whole pcm n radio unit with Android unit.
It's a very nice 10" vertical screen.

I have used the spring puller tool but I have pulled so hard that the hook broke and I broke bunch of the vents fins.

How hard can those clips hold this vent?!

Make sure you're using the correct pull tool. It's possible you might got one that's too short, or you're not hooking into the correct area of the vent, or both. I'll be pulling the vents shortly to fix something so I can take some pics for you.

This is the clearest video I've seen showing how to remove the vents on both sides of the PCM:

He removes both of them in 1:14. I spent an hour in my garage last night cursing and sweating and still have not fully succeeded in removing the right side vent in my 2015 Macan. Maybe as the car ages this becomes more difficult?

I had to pull with all my might with the VW trim tool to get the clips to pop. When it released, it did so with such force that the tool popped off and broke a fin in the vent. On the right side, same deal... I basically had to pull as hard as I could, and when it popped, it sounded like something broke inside. The bottom left most clip is still in, and despite all my efforts, I can't get it to pop.

Needless to say this has been a fairly traumatizing project so far. I feel like I need to persevere at this point and get the thing out to assess the damage. I'm on step 1 of like 200 towards installing an aftermarket CarPlay kit. Hopefully the next 199 steps are easier than this one.

Any tips out there? What am I doing wrong?

Yes, the first time you take this off...it is difficult.....but will you be good once its out. I put lube on all points, and can take it on/off quite easily now.
You need to get the hook, back and around the long tube...and pull...it will come off. @Santrix is the master of this removal :)
Which CP are you adding ?

#64 ·
For the right side piece....I hooked into the left vent...upper right corner, and yank. for the passenger side right vent. Top left corner, yank. Make sure you are anchored correctly...or you will destroy the vents on a miss pull. Back light the hole.........look for good anchor....

Let me see if i have a pic of the pice sitting on the dash....so you can see it......

@Santrix...has a video of him live doing this.......ping him maybe........ :)
Hang in there....the iSudar CP board I added is one of the BEST mods you can do...it totally updates the car. You will see graphics on your PCM , and colours that will BLOW you away. audio quality is great......and you still have BT option, at any time :) with CP playing, waze etc, :)

Thanks for the info @Teddis ! I bought the NM Automotive CarPlay Kit.

I just can't believe how hard that one clip is fighting me. I can see in your picture, is the bottom left one. That's the only clip still engaged.

I'm wondering if I maybe warmed up the car the plastic would get a bit more pliable or something? I'm almost pulling as hard as I can with a good anchor. Should I just pull as hard as I can and hope for the best?

What type of lube did you put on the clips?

@Santirx I'd love to see that video!

The hook goes on top corner. I marked my hook so I know when is properly hooked. Use that measurement to mark yours.

Then, I found it best once you have the hook in place, to pull with one hand and put the other on top of the trim. This will provide you with a controlled movement when it actually pops out.

Use some grease on those pins afterwards… it worked for @Teddis.

Well, that was a miserable experience.

For the passenger side vents, the bottom left clip was totally stuck. @Teddis was awesome enough let me text him the play by play and offered a ton of tips. I must have sent him 100 texts. Thanks Teddy!

I had to pull with all my might several times before it popped. Inspecting the clip, one of the metal pieces had completely folded over. I'm not sure if it was installed wrong, but I basically had to use enough force to bend the metal to pull it out. Here is my moment of triumph:

Amazingly by vent wasn't more damaged... a single fin broke.

OK, on to the left vent. It's got to be easier, right? Nope, it was even worse.

I pulled as hard as I could and the thing wouldn't budge. I'm by no means a jacked guy, but I'd say I have pretty typical strength. This thing was totally stuck.

There are four clips on the left side vent. Eventually I used a trim tool to pull up the two clips leftmost clips. This is the opposite of what most people do. But now I had two clips out.

I then tried to get that top right one. Instead of coming out, the force of me pulling the vent back cracked the plastic between the vent and the rest of the housing and messed up the internal fins. Excuse my language.

Figuring I'm going to have to replace this part and I had nothing to lose, I just went to town pulling and prying any way I could. I ended up getting the bottom right clip out by pulling as hard as I could while also prying the left side at the same time. The metal clip was mangled from that.

To get the top left out, I just pulled and pulled until eventually the plastic pin broke off inside the metal clip.

I wish there was a moral to this story. I'm not sure what I could have done differently. I don't understand why mine were so much harder to get off. I'm going to put some serious grease on these pins when this goes back in.

After the vents, everything else was smooth sailing. PCM out. Enough for tonight.

Thanks again @Teddis and @Santirx for all your help!
