For those ones that are on the fence of getting Connect ($830 Option) or Connect Plus ($1300 Option) because of CarPlay, Engadget just released a review of it.

CarPlay Review

I heard it from 2 reps on different occasions. As far as when they had no idea, I think the bigger question is if it will be available to those who already have CarPlay...wish I knew more. I find myself not using it much because it's plug in...

That's what I was afraid of.

In Aus. we don't appear to have any Wifi implementation in the car - no slot for a sim card. So I'm guessing retrofitting wireless carplay will require more than just a software upgrade:(

On the new Q7 the have both Android auto and Carplay with their multimedia. I tried that Android auto and it's horrible. Can't figure it out within 5 minutes so I've given up. My phone goes blank and only the non touch screen is activated. If I want to use that stupid dial I'd just use the standard nav on the Audi.

Apple carplay is so much better and user friendly. If using maps I would rather leave it plugged in. Wifi would probably drain the battery.

Ahhh!!

@mertoun , your comment prompted me to look at my phone (6+ ios9.3.1).
My Macan shows up under the carplay settings.

If I then turn BT off it says: "Bluetooth is Off. Carplay only available over USB, turn BT on to enable wireless carplay"

This is fairly strong evidence that wireless carplay is going to be via BT, rather than Wifi:)

That;s no sort of evidence actually. Today, you must connect the phone to the usb port for CarPlay, with a cable.

CarPlay is supported under WiFi but this mode isn't enabled at the moment (in iOS). I would say it's because of battery drain- how long does your phone run if you are running a wifi hotspot?

When car hotspots are relatively ubiquitous, I think iOS 10 will enable CarPlay both Bluetooth and wifi. Or iOS 9.8 or iOS 11, I have no idea. Bluetooth seems less problematic to me, maybe that will come in 9.3.4?

. But sometime in the near future wireless will become available, and trust me, it will be Bluetooth and wifi.

According to TechRadar, iOS 10 has one notable change to Apple Maps and Apple CarPlay: "Vehicles that supports [sic] Apple CarPlay not only get suggested alternate routes based on traffic conditions, Maps' turn-by-turn directions can pop up on the instrument (if they have a screen next to the odometer)." I wonder if this means that turn by turn directions will show up on our small screen to the right of the tachometer?

I'm wondering if you'd be the one to test it out and give us the turn by turn results;)? Subscribed.

Used CarPlay (iPhone 6+ with iOS 10.0.1) to get home today. Got turn by turn instructions including rerouting when I selected an alternate route. Also got good real-time traffic information. Before we requested guidance the estimated ETA to Home was not updating correctly, but once we selected guidance it worked fine.

CarPlay Map on Dash Display?

Still waiting on my Macan, but just tried the iOS 10 update to CarPlay in my wife's 2016 M-B (which can show factory M-B nav turn-by-turn in the instrument cluster). The CarPlay display is good with maps on the big M-B nav screen, but the nav interface in the instrument cluster does NOT show the nav turn-by-turn directions -- it only shows "connected to Apple CarPlay". :-/

Although disappointed, I think there are other great display options to keep on the instrument cluster screen (for M-B or Porsche), and one can leave the maps on the PCM screen. :)

Waiting on my Macan S. I did not order Porsche Nav, but only the CarPlay option. I decided to save the $2k+ (even more if nav and Connect Plus!), because I found that after ordering factory nav on my wife's car, she doesn't use it! Only uses her iPhone because it's easier.

Reflecting on my personal "nav trends", I like to use my phone, because I can speak or click an address in Google (or Apple) maps, and it's very responsive & current. I don't know about Porsche, but the various built-in nav systems I've had previously (even the new M-B) are sometimes difficult to operate (or remember the voice commands) and take a long time to get an address correct -- the phone always seemed much faster & responsive. I imagine having it on the CarPlay display is nicer than figuring out where to prop up my phone.

If you have an Apple Watch the turn by turn map shows up in your wrist and the haptics tells you when to turn right or left without the need to see any screen. Look at the attached pic.

I've had the apple watch since it was released. A few months ago I took it off because the buzzing from the stupid thing kept breaking my focus. With the new OS, I updated it and am giving it another chance. This time I turned off every single notification and the thing never buzzes. It's basically a timepiece and something I use for tracking my heart rate and workouts...that's it. I absolutely love it for these purposes and can't stand it for anything else. Too small to look at and too distracting for messaging and notifications.

@kdr As an admittedly huge Apple fan boy, I immediately ordered the Watch (stainless) when it came out. What a disappointment. Took it back in less than a week.

When Watch OS2 came out, I decided to try it again, but only got the Sport instead in case I felt the same. It's much better, but still not really great. I also can't stand all the notifications. Plus so many of the apps are totally pointless or useless at that screen size.

When the iPhone 7 came out, ordered two on the first day for the wife and I, just as I have for every other iPhone release (well, stood in line for the first few iterations). Didn't even consider the Watch.

Didn't even bother to upgrade to Watch OS3 the first day, but certainly did ios10 on the phones while waiting for the 7s to arrive.

The new OS3 version is much better, but honestly, it has nowhere to go but up... Still a long way from caring about it.

This is the only Apple product I have ever bought and been utterly disappointed in.

Now, back to the CarPlay topic--I did try using the new Maps version, which works quite well. But the previous version worked fine for me too. However, it's still nothing compared to Waze (but what happened to the Porsche icons?). I really like the social aspect, primarily the Police markers. Neither Apple Maps nor Google Maps can touch it without that integration. I'm actually surprised Google hasn't added it, but I guess they want to keep the products differentiated.

While I previously said I really want CarPlay, until they open up 3rd party apps, it's just not that significant. My phone on my proclipusa mount does just fine.

I agree on the watch. I like the heart rate monitor a lot. It's more dependable than the straps I've used in the past. Beyond that I could take it or leave it.

I love CarPlay. I switch around between apple radio, pandora and my own music collection a lot. I wish the map app was more creative with routes like Waze but it seems to be improving. I too use Waze on my phone with a mount and toggle between Waze and CarPlay as needed.

@kdr But that's the thing, the heart rate monitor was why I bought the Apple watch to begin with. But it only monitors the heart every ~10 minutes unless you are exercising (And back on OS1 more like hourly). My FitBitHR does constant monitoring, and lasts several days before needing a charge. But unfortunately it looks like a FitBit vs a watch... Plus

I am enjoying the new Breath app though.

So at rest, every 10 minutes is enough for me since this is really just establishing a resting heart rate...good for seeing the long term benefits of exercise and the short-term impact of over-training.

During exercise is when you want it recording more often, which the Apple Watch does.

I've tried a gazillion heart rate and exercise gadgets, and while the Apple Watch isnt perfect, it's pretty darn good. My only knock on it is that it doesn't have a barometer and therefore relies on GPS for elevation data, which is notoriosly innacurate. I still prefer my Garmin bike computer for exercise since it has a barometer and can give me true climbing data, but I go redundant with the Apple Watch to see my heart rate because I'm tired of replacing broken chest straps.

I'm sure there's a lot more on the horizon with the health app on the phone and possibly incorporating the watch. Like the phones, I'm sure there wont be nearly as many wearable brands around in a few years as this stuff matures and only the strongest will prevail.

So I answered the mystery on Apple Car Play for the 2017 Macan - To get this feature CAR CONNECT must be ordered as AN OPTION except for the Turbo where it comes standard. To get CAR CONNECT+ it must be ordered as AN OPTION on all models. :nerd:

#168 ·
Connect, Nav and Connect+ are separate items. Nag does not come bundled with Connect on any trim.
So does Apple Car Play work on a 2017 Turbo without any Connect Module since they come standard with Nav?

Any 2017 Turbo owners like to chime in?

Not that I know of. I control Carplay with Siri. I activate it saying "Hey Siri!" and after the acknowledge, say "Play next".

The other day, just for fun, I just said "play me a song" and it started playing all this amazing music from my curated Music subscription account. Really cool.

I use Siri for everything related to Carplay. Almost don't touch the display at all.

#171 ·
IF you can't control carplay with SIRI, then there is no other way to control from the wheel.

Note....and I've put this in so many threads now.....you can not change the PCM options on a 2017 Macan once your car is built. That means if you don't have nav, you can't add it. If your car was built without Voice, you can't add it. You also can't add connect or connect +. What ships with the car is what you get. If you order Navigation (and/or connect plus), make sure that your SA adds feature QH1 which does not show on the configurator that you and I can use. It is a no charge feature but it must be added by the dealer. I repeat...if your dealer does not add QH1 your car will be built without PCM voice and the only way to get it added is to order a new car (sounds absurd but that's porsche's position....and what I did). No, Connect plus does not automatically include QH1. You will have a voice button but only to activate SIRI.

Yes..it's a mess.

Wireless carplay for macan?

Hi guys how are you? I wanted to know if carplay was available by bluetooth or wi fi on the macan. I have a 2017 macan gts. sometimes connecting the cable can be so frustrating or if you forget the cable.

thanks

#174 ·
No wireless CarPlay yet. Not sure if it will upgradeable. I have an extra cable I keep in center storage area...it's black. I use it when needed.

I was under the impression that there is no such thing as wireless CarPlay for any vehicle manufacturer, at least not yet.

#187 ·
Hi mate - what's the Porsche-branded tray thingy I see in your pic? I don't have that in my car. Is that a box I omitted to tick????:crying:

Also - I see in the background another cable with an adaptor for a cig lighter-type power socket. Do you have that for when you just want to charge your phone while driving, but not get into the Carplay zone? I ask, because I was thinking I'd do this - have 2 x cables plugged in and ready for both requirements.

Cheers.

Buy a cable but make sure its hot an angled plug.

With a straight plug the iPhone is very tight when it is placed in the aerial booster bracket and the angled plug give a bit more room.
