I'm getting ready for my 2020 Macan S delivery and have been shopping around for extended warranty as I plan to keep the car for a while, drove my last car for almost 10 years. Dealership is offering 10 year 100k miles protection from Zurich for $7.5 and I know there are other options like Fidelity and others but Gieco's MBI caught my attention because it doesn't require a huge payment upfront and is much much cheaper in the long run.

MBI can be added to an existing/new policy for $35 a year. It covers the vehicle for 7 years or up to 100k miles with $250 deductible. It is an exclusionary policy.. details below..

"*MBI Exclusions

Exclusions to this policy include regular maintenance services such as tune-ups, suspension alignment, wheel balancing, filters, lubrication, coolant and fluids, spark plugs, brake pads and linings, brake shoes, and tires. Also, breakdown repairs made necessary by intentional damage, corrosion, misuse, or improper maintenance are not covered. Mechanical Breakdown Insurance coverage is in excess of coverage provided by your manufacturer's warranty. Read the policy amendment for the complete terms and conditions of this coverage."

if you've opted in for Geico's MBI, what has your experience been with it? Do you recommend it over some of the other available options?

I have MBI from Geico for my Macan but have not used yet and hope to never need to use it. My car is out of warranty and I think having the MBI makes me sleep better at night. I asked my SA at the dealer if he had had any experience with customers bringing cars to service using MBI and he said he did and they never had an issue in getting things approved. Again, it is something I pay to hopefully never need to use.

This. No clue what 7.5 is. Zurich is an insurance company.

I’ve lauded the benefits of MBI here over and over. I have it and have had it for over 20 years. Ive used it many times. They’ve never given me a problem. They will call dealer or licensed repair shop to verify and then pay with their CC.

Once they supplied parts as it was considerably cheaper for them to do so and there was no delay.

If you want, I’ll give you a list of things they’ve paid for on my vehicles over the years.

I have it. I wrote that I called them and SPECIFICALLY asked them about the timing chain issue and would they cover a $9,000 bill to pull the engine once out of the 4/50. They said 'yes, they would'. Guess we'll see if that happens.

See below my real experience I posted on another thread:
There has been a lot of discussion in this Forum about the value of getting extended warranty for the Macan once warranty is over. I personally decided not to get one and added Geico’s MBI (Mechanical Breakdown Insurance) to my policy before my car hit the mark of 15 months or 15,000 miles. You can read the details here: Mechanical Breakdown Insurance | GEICO This add-on to my policy has cost me around $90 every 6 months as an addition to my policy. Many will say that you pay for a period while your car is covered by Porche’s warranty which is true but I thought I would try it and hopefuly never need to use it.

Well, today I had to use it for the first time and the experience was simply “wow”!!!!! I bit the bullet and decided to take my car to the Porsche dealer for the 40k miles service. Yes, they charge an arm and a leg for that but I did not have time to deal with an Indy shop and be without a loaner for the day and my dealer has been extremelly nice since I bought the car including replacing my transfer case after at no charge after the car was out of warranty. Couple hours after I dropped my car my SA called to say that there was an oil leak on the valve cover gasket and although not too bad I would need to keep an eye on it and fix it sooner or later. I asked how much to fix it and he said $1700 (let’s not discuss how much this would cost if I took the car to an Indy shop since I would shop around if I had to pay for it). I immediatley thought about the Geico MBI I had in my policy and asked him if he had expereince working with them. He didn’t but told me I should call them and see if they would cover it. I called the number for the MBI service and it was immediately answered by a very nice and knowleable lady. She asked for some info about me to make sure I was the owner and policy holder and then asked more specific questions about the issue. I told her all I knew was an oil leak on the valve gasket but I had no details on specific parts or service that was needed. When I told her that she asked the following which I think is very important for people that are good with DYI service: “do you have documentation of all oil changes you made during the lifetime of the vehicle?” I said they were all done at the dealer and although I kept all the copies of all services done they could provide that to her. She asked for my SA name and phone number and told me she would contact me back. In less than 10 minutes she called me back saying she had all information needed and the service was auhtorized. I had to pay $250 deductible directly to the dealer and they would take care of the rest. Right after we hang up my SA called me to confirm what she had just told me.

I just got my car back and all looks good. In sum, from all horror stories I hear from extended warranty services that when you need they find some fine print that won’t cover your issue, etc… I can say I am extremelly happy with the service I got from Geico, their customer service could not have been nicer and more professional and I am happy I have it on my policy.

I've also had Geico MBI since day 1 with my Macan. I don't currently have a transfer case problem, but if/when I do and my warranty is over in 2021, Will geico MBI cover that? What type of maintenance records are they going to ask for for that? I do a combination of DYI (easy stuff, filters) and go to an independent for oil changes.

#12 ·
I am pretty sure they would cover the transfer case. As you can see on my post above when I needed to use the MBI the service was top notch. The agent was extremely friendly and she knew what she was doing. It did not feel one of those agents that are playing by the book. When I explained her the problem my car had she immediately knew what I was talking about and said it would be definitely covered. In terms of maintenance, my problem was an oil leak on the valve cover gasket so she asked if I had proof of all oil changes. I told her all maintenance was done at the dealer and she could confirm with them. She called the dealer and 10 minutes later she called me back saying the service was approved.

Just changed over to GEICO today after being with USAA Auto for 19 years!! Our 2019 Macan S just hit 12K on our way back from Houston this past weekend, and I have to make a decision quick. (Since you can only start MBI with a car less than 15 month/15K miles). Compared to our current USAA 6 months premium for all of our cars, we ended up paying $140 less even with our Macan MIB included ($177 for 6 months) , and now I have a better peace of mind till 7yrs/100K miles. Today is a Win Win for me!

GEICO MBI

Just because the topic comes up in various contexts I thought I'd just add this here . . . . .

I had a headlight go out the other night. Called GEICO MBI this morning and they didn't even bat an eye . . "of course, it's covered".

I've no idea what the issue is . . . I've been seeing a couple examples of weird behavior about the same time I lost the light. I have the 4 LED DRL and the high beams but no low beam.

Haven't been to the dealer yet but I already have a GEICO number to set the wheels in motion if I need one of those snappy $2,795.00 PDLS units.

I like the old days when you could replace a bulb. Fascinating how the Macan seems to KNOW when it hit 50,000 miles.

Bottom line . . . I am thrilled and comforted to have the GEICO MBI.

We'll see how this goes.

Just to close this out…

As expected… The Geico MBI team was great to work with. I gave them an early heads up… When I saw the $4000 bill on the horizon.

The nice people at Porsche service, even though the car was out of warranty, agreed to pick up the $2800 in parts and the installation was only about $500. Made no sense to make a claim with $250 deductible.

But to their credit the Geico team called me a couple times just to check up on the status of the claim and see if there was anything they needed to be doing. I called them when the whole thing was over and let them know to close the claim out.

My experience has been with them that they are great to work with and pay off like a slot machine whenever you have a claim.

I have Geico MBI . My service writer says they are top notch and always have come through . I have never made a claim . I had one 911 go off warranty that I did consider keeping and MBI was a huge plus in the process . I have another 911 off warranty that is too old as MBI only goes out 7 years . As this current Macan turbo ages I may hold it awhile . Waiting a year for my new 911 somewhat calmed me from doing this again for awhile. The car market is just too much work and MBI actually sounds like less work .

There is one catch . MBI is not transferrable to a non Geco person. I dont know if it is to a Geico person . Its actually a good question that I just thought of . In contrast CPO is transferrable and extended warranty usually is as well.

I have Geico. I never looked into MBI before. I just did for a new Macan S.

I just did a quote on brand-new 2022 Macan S and the MBI for the Macan came out to be $448 for 6 months, which is $75/month.

The OP mentioned $35/year, which just seems insanely cheap to me, regardless of the quote I was just given. (I realize that the OP posted 3 years ago, but that much couldn't have changed, right?)

Any thoughts on the $75/month quote I just received for a 2022 Macan S?

Mine is ~$28/mo. But I signed up right after I took possession of my 18 Turbo.

I've had experience with GEICO MBI . . . having paid to replace 2 transmissions . . . one on a car I'd sold a month earlier . . and with a nearly $4,000 Macan headlight.

They pay promptly . . no hassle and are super helpful.

I've written, in detail, my experience several times in the past on other threads. There is a lot if info here on the forum.

I'm trying to get a quote for MBI but not having the best experience with a local Geico office where we had our policies opened. I need to send 2-3 emails and maybe they reply after a week or so.

Is there any way to get a quote for MBI "straight from Geico" or I should find a different local office?

Yes, absolutely. If you don't have your new car yet, you can go on Geico's website and do a 'replace vehicle quote' and they automatically include MBI (and roadside service) in the default quote they give. I've been running some quotes on VINs similar to the build I want. What's strange, that I've noticed, is that if you decline MBI from the quote, they remove the option to put it back on until you do another quote. Very odd.

I've also had good luck calling Geico's 1 (800) 207-7847 and getting in touch with someone right away that can answer my questions. I don't use a local office at all.

I think you are allowed to add MBI to a brand-new car within 15 months and 15,000 miles of buying it, so if you already have the car, you'll probably want to call and talk to someone.

#23 ·
Thank you. Yes, I already have a policy in place and the car is about 4 months old. I only dealt with a local office because after I got the initial quote online they started spamming me with daily phone calls.

I'll call Geico's no. and ask about adding the MBI.

Please let me me know (in a PM at least), what they say and what they quote. I wonder if the number that they gave me ($448/ 6 months) is high or just the going rate these days.

I can't keep us . . threads getting deleted, closed and merged faster than Usain Bolt.

Since someone had asked . . .

GEICO MBI is ONLY transferrable to another GEICO owner and within first 15,000 miles. (I think there is also a time limit, but forgot to ask)

My vehicle insurance costs every 6 month are: $309.60

The Porsche Macan Base and the Subaru are about the same price. They are within 1 HP of each other.
BOTTOM LINE: I am paying $5.60 per month for MBI - Talk about a steal
Insurance for the 2022 Subaru is roughly the same as the Macan Base . . Subaru 260 HP. // Macan 261 HP

Wow, $480 total from Geico for 6 months in NYC is a steal! I haven't seen this low rate living within five-boros. And I have no traffic violation or any accident in last 10 years (knock on wood) but was quoted $1300+ for a Macan and that's without MBI or care rental. Am I doing something wrong?? Or do you know someone from Geico? ;-)

I've yet to hear from more people who's gotten MBI on a Macan recently, though. The quote I got from them a few months ago (August '22) on a random Macan S on a lot (so I had a VIN to use) was somewhat expensive - $448 for 6 months, or $75 per month, which is way more than folks have been mentioning for coverage they got back in 2018-2019.

That does seem a bit on the pricey side . . . . it may be a function of where you are garaging it and if you are using it for business/pleasure.

Mine was garaged in our weekend home which is a small place in the Hudson Valley . . . . I want to say that venue you might be a factory but, as I ponder, I'm not sure venue has any correlation to "Mechanical Breakdown".

I've had two occurrences . . . both transmissions that bit the dust . . . GEICO was wonderful to work with, handled everything, including the claim for a car I'd sold a month earlier and they initiated and processed the claim and I was paid within 10 days.

When the headlight went out on the Macan . . . I called them and let them know. Told them the quote for the part was $2,875 and the dealer was talking up to $1,000 for labor. They didn't bat and eye and called a couple times to keep abreast of developments and remind me they were there to help.

They've been an absolute pleasure to wrk with whenever I've had any problem.

Yeah, it definitely feels pricey, but I was using a random 2022 Macan S that was for sale on the internet for my quote, and I don't know how "real" the quote was. But I did notice that I'm the only person in any of these threads that has gotten an MBI quote in the last year-ish, so I'm wondering if the price went up.

I quoted the Macan S as a replacement for my truck, which I drive to work ~once per week and I put ~7k miles per year on.

So I dunno. The Macan I ordered just finished being built, so I haven't done anything with the quote. i'm still looking to see what other people are getting for recent quotes for MBI for their Macans.

#33 ·
Well . . I posted that invoice so folks would have a starting place upon which to base comparisons.

It may merit, when you get your VIN, to contact GEICO and get a quote based on the particulars of you situation . . businessperson, where garaged, miles/year and so forth.

You can find detailed summaries of my experience with GEICO MBI in other threads on the topic. Short version, my experience has been wonderful. I see GEICO as my "transmission and engine" safety net.

This should be a link to one of the prior threads #91

Yeah, I totally get it. Your post and others like it made me look into MBI in the first place (since I'm already a Geico customer). You've had great experiences with that, and I'm looking to keep the Macan for a long while, so I'm definitely interested. I was just shocked at how different the pricing was for my quote. But, like you said, I'm going to wait until my situation solidifies a bit more before pressing further with it. I was just wondering if the quote I got was a current-state-of-affairs thing or if I'm being hosed.

Call them... My payments are about $24/month since I bought into it within a week of buying mine. I'm currently on their plan and fortunately I haven't had to need them yet at 66K miles on an '18 Turbo.
