Winter tires/rims in Canada

I started searching around recently for winter tires and rims. Finding decent 19" or 20" tires is relatively easy, but I can't seem to find any cheap rims. I'd like to put 19" winters on because they are cheaper and there is better selection.

I have a choice: get more expensive 20" tires and swap them on my existing rims or go with expensive mag rims for 19" tires.

Anyone find a source for 19" steel rims that fit?

I don't think it's a good idea as you want taller sidewall for winter usage (to absorb those crappy potholes). Just my 2 cents.

As for Michelin vs Nokian .... Michelin will likely be better for dry roads and braking. Nokian will be better in snow/ice condition. If you go north of GTA often and/or drive a long distance for commute, I would think the latter can be considered a bit more when narrowing down your choice.

I have the R3 SUVs on my stock 20” staggered setup. Phenomenal winter tire. Best I have had. About 6k miles and holding well. I hear they get a bit noisy deeper into the tread. I bought a set of 21s for my summer setup and moved my 20s to winter use.

ETA- it took about 4 months to source the R3s here in the states but that had to do with 1) new tire size for Nokia 2) limited US distributors and stock and 3) slow boat from Finland.

Reviving this thread. New GTS owner, I’ve been researching winter tire and rims for the car. A lot of reputable local shops sell packages in square setups but everyone in this forum seems to be against square setups. Is everyone running Staggered winters here? Where should I go to get a decent staggered set. Thanks!

Currently considering options for winter setup for the 2020 GTS.

OEM 20 Silver RS Spyders from Pfaff are $6500 + $230 (for center caps) + HST. This would be installed with TPMS.
Unknown tire that comes with the set. Sound like people in the past have gotten Dunlop or Pirelli Scorpions.

Rennsport tire has the DAI R98 or R182 with:
Option 1 with Michelin X-Ice Snow - $2,690
Option 2 with Pirelli Scorpion Winter - $2,750
Option 3 with Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 SUV - $2,950
The above prices include OEM center caps, TPMS, balanced and installed.

~4k difference is tough to swallow between OEM and aftermarket. How have the DAI rims been for people who have been using them so far?

Don't see a thread for Macan S winters... but dealer @ YEG said that Nokian's NOT Porsche approved. I was hoping to pick up Hakka's because Consumers.ca (2020) considers these the top rated winters & based on many many MF comments, they seem to be best option for brutal prairie winter driving (starting October). Thoughts? Recommendations appreciated!

@dk3what, I've had them for only 1 winter so far and I had no problems at all. I like the look, easy to clean, etc...

As for tires, you can't go wrong - I like Hakka R3 a lot but I can tell they are not winter performance tires, so if you want an alternative I'd probably consider Michelin Alpin PA5 (not X-Ice snow) or Pirellis.

I’m also starting the hunt now. I have a MY21 GTS (well, I don’t technically have it just yet - it’s in a container right now 😁) - I’ve always outfitted my vehicles with Nokian Hakkas and usually through KalTire (GTA). When I check through Kal the tire finder gives me a warning that my warranty could be impacted if I purchase non vehicle specific tires - any word/thoughts on this?

They're delivering the vehicle to my house, I'll swap them myself.

Also, I just looked and found the 295 section tires are dated 2018 and 2019...the 265's are both 2020 tires. Not impressed with these old dates on the two tires, we'll see what Rennsportire has to say, but this certainly will change my opinion of them.

@fooit, @Admiral and others that this applies to:
After having your R182 / R98 wheels and centre caps from rennsporttire for a few winters, how have they been holding up (eg road salt, wear, fading, etc)? Also, do you find 20" tires grip the snow well or would going with 19" tires be a safer bet for winter driving in Toronto? For everyone's benefit, it snows every so often here with possible accumulation of more than 10cm.

I just bought a set of 18” alloys with Michelin X-ice North 4 studded tires. I have used these tires on two other vehicles and have found them to be remarkably good in the winter. I’ve always had separate sets on all my cars, and these ones I can say really stand in a class of their own. Where we live we have to deal ice and deep snow as well as hills and poorly cleared roads. If you want maximum drivability in winter, these are the tires for you. If you want performance sporty tires for well-cleared urban streets, these are not for you.
