Winter tires/rims in Canada

I started searching around recently for winter tires and rims. Finding decent 19" or 20" tires is relatively easy, but I can't seem to find any cheap rims. I'd like to put 19" winters on because they are cheaper and there is better selection.

I have a choice: get more expensive 20" tires and swap them on my existing rims or go with expensive mag rims for 19" tires.

Anyone find a source for 19" steel rims that fit?

Got the package pricing! Go to the link @bobblehead posted earlier at RFD above for more info on how to get onto the group buy. Also mention Bobblehead and TimmyD referred you! Email allen att simplytire dot com

Always good to get brownie points ;)

I'm probably going for Option 6 package with Bridgestone Blizzak DMV1 109R XL - $2,200.00

Going to need wheel spacers in the back and maybe tire pressure monitors - you think we can go without?

I suspect not since we have live pressure monitoring in our cars and want to keep an eye on things w/ torque splits running on a square setup. Probably just answered my own question.

I'll ask for pics of the BBS' and also if there are any other lower priced options than the BBS' (I'm not as fancy as some folks around here!).

Some more info from Allen at SimplyTire's Winter Wheel & Tire packages and some other conversations I've been having regarding SimplyTire's 255-55-18 square setup:

- No spacers needed
- TPMS is extra $350 in total
- $150 less in the package for the Rial P10 (http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/Whee...8&filterBrand=All&filterSpecial=false&filterNew=All&filterWeight=All&sort=Brand)

Who's getting Winter Tires and opting to NOT put on TPMS? Any reasons why we should/shouldn't bother?

I use Jensen Tire here in Oakville for our switch overs and was curious as to what they could do. Here is what they came back with (below). Any thoughts with regards to the rims, cost?

"we don't deal in rial rims -we have two rim options from fast wheels.ca model (nemesis) & replika .ca model ( r-152) cost $200.00 per rim for either. 235/60r18 blizzak dmv1 $237.00 per-255/55r18 $240.92 per -sensors $90.00 per -all four with tax everything in $2350.08 can do either size for this price -the rims are both hub centric"

#42 ·
The 'Nemesis' only comes with 18 * 8 et 42 has a pretty high offset. In comparing to the stock set

The variance for front : 21mm less clearance for the front strut/suspension and 21mm retraction inwards of the wheel.

The variance for rear : 8mm less clearance for the rear strut/suspension and 34mm retraction inwards of the wheel.

The front variance may be a concern. As for the rear, the tire of 255 may not fit the 18 * 8 wheels properly. For this wheel size, 245 would be the max. Thus, that would be the logical choice may have to be 235/60/18 square setup.

The 'R-152' only comes with 18 * 8 et 35. Still high offset. In comparing to the stock set

The variance for front: 14mm less clearance for the front strut/suspension and 14mm retraction inwards of the wheel

The variance for rear: 1mm less clearance for the rear strut/suspension and 27mm retraction inwards of the wheel.

It would seem between these two wheels, the R-152 has a slightly better fitment due to clearance. Just my 2 cents.

#48 ·
My opinion is I don't like seeing less clearance for the front strut because when you are making a full lock to lock steering wheel turn, the chance of rubbing with such relative high variance (14mm) may be a big issue, the worst case is it may damage the tires unknowingly. In the end, it may be borderline acceptable (based on mathematical calculation). Lastly, if there is too much snow & ice built up in the suspension area, it may create steering issue in some case due to the narrower clearance of the strut/suspension. Just be careful when choosing the wheels.

Those proposed wheels are really meant for the Audi Q5 setup. But since nobody has test fitted one yet, it would be highly advisable to get the shop to mount one for test fitment before finalizing the order. just my 2 cents.

You're right. I'd probably go nuts seeing the TPMS malfunction lights.

I'm a data geek so I'll probably end up regretting not getting them. Having the car for the next 5 yrs+ should be worth it the up-front cost.

Called Allen today, going for the Blizzak DM-V1's on the 18" square setup.

Install by appointment only. Set Nov 11. He says once the snow flies / last week of Nov hits, it's game over for appointments/bookings.

Since the Macan has a rear biased setup awd, the tires are setup staggered for a bit more traction and better stance. To go staggered on winter, you can maintain this setup if you wish but not absolutely required.

There are Macan owners wanting to rotate the 4 tires as to give a longer life by doing so. Also, it really comes down to finding the right wheels (if go aftermarket) for the square setup as you are still trying to maintain to the closest OEM spec as possible.

Hey Everyone,

I ended up going with NOKIAN HAKKAPELIITTA 8 SUV - STUDDED TIRES
They will be mounted on my 21" rims from Wheeldynamics.net

I wanted to maintain the sporty looks. I got factory OE sizes.

Front
265/40-21
Rear
295/35-21

My dealer told me these are the best winter tires you can get for your Porsche.
Though without the N0 rating currently, they said there would be no problems.
I should have them mounted mid next week. I will take some pictures for you guys.

This option from Tire Rack works for 19" tires in the recommended 235/55 and 255/50 sizes (michelin, Hakka, Pirelli). I chose Hakka R2 SUV from Kal Tire to be mounted on those rims. Note the rims are the same front and rear but are within the parameters for mounting the specified tire sizes according to Tire Rack.

LET IT SNOW!

4 x 255-55-18 Bridgestone Blizzak DMV1 109R XL
4 x 18” BBS SR Wheels (Gunmetal)
4 x Plastic Tire Bags
4 x Mount, Balance and Install

TPMS sensors:

When you get in the car, it will ask you if you changed your tires, you go thru tire settings and indicate new 18" winters and you're good to go. Also, I'm definitely glad I got them. The dash light, and the MFD warning is annoying. Warning shows up in 3 places (dash, mfd, and also text warning on mfd).

Impressions: Not as nice as my 20's with AS. Definitely more floaty/squirmy. Rides softer over speed bumps. I need to slow down on on/off ramps. Stance on a square setup looks OK to me! Porsche Centre Caps fit! Pretty quiet in the cabin still! I can't say I am experiencing a noticeable db difference between the 20s and the 18' winters.

I'm excited to get some heavy snow. This thing is going to be a tank. Might be the ultimate winter setup.

Plastic tire bags for my 20s weren't really bags. They were more like 2 plastic sheets sandwiched together and tied. So air can get at my rubber. Probably b/c the wheels are too wide?

SimplyTire did a great job otherwise. Had tire shine on my new winters and they loaded the back of my Macan very well (used cardboard between the tires and rear hatch). Although I think the 'proper' way to have put my centre caps on would have had the crest point down toward the valve stem... but I'll let that slide.

Question: after you indicated 18" winters how long did it take for the warning lights to go off? And what tire pressure are you running on your Blizzaks - same for front and rear?

#68 ·
Those look amazing @TimD!!!

I can't wait till I get my car as I have the exact same setup. Not sure how the gun metal will look on Agate Grey.

I'm a little confused - did you forgo TPMS which caused the warnings or did you have them installed and the warnings came on but went away after time?

Did Simply Tire include the BBS centre caps as well?

FYI, since you and @bobblehead have your winters installed, snow will be delayed this winter.

#91 ·
For me there are three reasons for winter tires on dedicated rims.
1. I like the increased performance you get by using summer tires and winter tires in the appropriate seasons.
2. Summer 20's are $1500 per set. Winter 19's are $950 per set. I love the idea that High Performance winter tires are cheaper than standard performance all seasons, and it saves wear on the summer tires to boot.
3. Kinda like how the ladies like to put different color towels in the bathroom to change the look, I like to put different wheels on the car to change the look of it. I've got a floor jack and room in the garage to store the tire set that isn't in use, so the swap out is no big deal.

Thanks Tim. I saw your pics the other day - winter tire package looks great. I appreciated the other member who posted the photoshoped version of your Macan in agate grey as thats what my Macan is. Getting them put on Nov 28 at SimplyTire.
I was just at SimplyTire last week with my wife's BMW X5d - putting on new Bridgestone Blizzak DMV's. Very pleased with that tire and my first experience with SimplyTire. Very efficient and great price. Thanks @bobblehead and Tim for making this suggestion - good find.

So there is another Agate Grey with BBS SR's in the GTA. If you see your twin make sure to high beam me or wave!:)
