Transfer case or Cobb tune issue?

For those with Macan Turbos and Cobb, i have a quirk maybe you guys can offer an opinion on. I drive my Turbo in Sport mode 99% of time, so i only can comment on this mode. When I accelerate, and i step on gas, the Macan seems to have a slight stumble as it “searches to get the gear in place”. It’s hard to describe, but when i do it it seems like you feel Macan “lock” into a gear after pressing pedal. It’s not a smooth shift. It’s like a slight studder.

It's hard to verbalize, but for me, not so much a quick shift issue, but a stuttering at slow speed, especially from dead stop. Try driving off slowly from dead stop & see if you feel that same stutter. Good luck, hope you're not in the cursed club.

Which mode or does it matter?

Most likely transfercase issue. Welcome to the club ;).

Hello @vandit, we have a 2016 Turbo with the latest Cobb v202 OCT91 with the TC replaced (spark plugs and injectors replaced) and still no smoothness in acceleration in any mode so that makes two of us. The wife that drives it just had a 2018 Base loaner again to drive for a day and she said it again that the Base "just goes" as in smooth where the Turbo seems to overpower the PDK in a such a way as it feels like it is "searching" for the right gear instead of just going through them. For almost 4 years and counting, we have not being satisfied with the smoothness or how so much engine power feels to be out of sync with the PDK.

We started with Stock setup and there is that hesitation off the line, then going with Cobb or Flat 6 resulting in too aggressive shirts and jolts, then with the latest v202 it is smoother when going steady but it is not when you are trying to push it from the line.

Our last ditch effort would be to work with John at BGP to see if his map work will smooth it out. We do not need any more power, we just need the engine to dance in sync with the gear shifting to provide seamless acceleration without noticing PDK brain work to figure out what gear to be in as it feels confused.

I would be interested to know if anyone with an early Turbo 2015 or 2016 had a TC replaced to get that out of the way and then apply John's map to see significant difference in the smoothness.

I haven’t noticed a smoothness difference with 205, but then again could be the TC causing the sensation

My 2015 Macan Turbo has 60k on it and a Cobb tune. At 40k the TC started going and the dealer replaced it immediately. The tech drove it around the lot and within seconds knew what it was. The Cobb issue is different entirely. At times in normal mode during acceleration the turbo over boosts the engine before the car can downshift so when it does finally downshift its an abrupt event. Keeping an eye on the boost gauge and more finesse with the gas will keep the boost and transmission in sync. It happens less in sport and sport plus because the transmission is usually in a lower gear than normal mode. When I remove the Cobb for dealer services it doesn't happen. I do love the added power the tune gives the car and makes it more fun to drive. There is a bit of a learning curve to getting it right. Its like my shifter kart. You cant just mash the throttle.

So last few days I have a slight clunk when taking off from a stop, that happens not everytime but often enough. Like something is rolling in back hatch and hitting lift gate. I assume this is the transfer case.

@vandit, same symptoms we had exactly and TC replacement fixed that. However, now as @Restor8 is pointing out in Comfort mode the Cobb is over boosting resulting in abrupt shifts when pushed in a moments notice at low speeds and then at 55mph speeds when I tried to pass someone and pushed for it the boost went to 17psi or so and then suddenly dropped resulting in a jolt. Bottom line, there is no smoothness to it as in Engine/Boosters and PDK are not in sync.

Interesting. Thx for info. I wonder if Cobb can fix that; or we have to with a BgB tune solution.

@vandit, based on the forum feedback BgB is the last thing to try that makes it right. I am not exactly sure what is the point of all the Cobb map revisions that still do not deliver smooth power delivery if the ECU is out of sync with the PDK.

@Sgtdevildog, that's a good question that I did not consider since I am not an expert on tuning and with a name like Cobb with charging what they charge and posting all the amazing graphs with regular version updates, I may be in a minority they do not care about, since I want the smoothness of the power delivery for every day happiness, over the abundance of power needed on the track which I assume is the target audience. We have not driven other variants besides our Turbo and a Base loaner and find the Base to be very smooth, seamless, and always in sync when we drove them. May be this is not achievable on a Turbo by design but without trying John's map from teambgb we would never know. So John's map is our last go at it and I will certainly report back with my resident tester, the wife, for whom this was the anniversary present that never realized its promise.

I just installed the Cobb Stage 1 93 tune, and I'm having the same issue. The shifting is way off in all modes. It really only works well at slow acceleration or if I control the shift points with the paddles. I called Cobb, and they offered zero assistance, which was underwhelming. They told me to contact another company, By Design. Has anyone found a fix or the cause of the problem? I was thinking to see if there is a way to reset the PDK ECU so it can relearn the new shift points based on the increased HP. If not, the tune is coming off because it can't be good long term for the car running like this.
