Quick update: so far the problem seems to happen more often after reversing, especially with sharp left or right reverse. No issue when reversing, but happens right after the reverse.

Dealership is still trying to reproduce it.

I am impressed with how good the dealership and Porsche USA are so far, really trying hard to fix the issue.

Thanks for the suggestion!

I did a bunch of these but they were all negative. The problem happens like 2 times a week, very bad when it happens. Now that I know reversing triggers it, hopefully I can go again and try to repro with them. Thanks for the suggestion again.

When you say reversing triggers it , do you mean you experience the problem in normal drive mode mode , after reversing , and only in Ofd Road mode ??

Not a reply, but, can anyone confirm the cost for a replacement TC?
I have a 17 GTS with 77,000 and my SA tells me the TC has not been replaced. The car drives just fine, but, What to do next? am I going to have the problem eventually or did some escape whatever failure created the problem? this is a bitch...

If the car is driving fine don’t replace the TC but do replace your dealer.

Changing your TC fluid regularly (I've seen 20-40k suggested) seems to help prevent these failures. It's not part of the Porsche maintenance schedule though. Hopefully your '17 has the updated TC from the factory (I forget the date cutoff).

Well showed the tech the thumping in sharp reverse in off-road mode. They told me they can’t do the warranty work based on that because he says the car expects off road terrain, not tarmac.

Just tried off-road on gravel… tech might have a point. I don’t feel anything other than the rocks when doing the sharp reverse turns on loose ground.

On pavement it thumps, on loose ground it doesn’t. The explanation seems to be with grippy new summer tires, the off road system is expecting no grip but there’s too much grip and that’s why it’s thumping.

tech says Porsche will only approve warranty if the thumping occurs in regular mode.

So this is the A variant of the transfer case? I know the replacement refurbs end in X.

Car has 126k miles on it and it seems really new?

Probably not a good idea to take the car to the dealer if you only get grinding and thumping on reverse. There’s a TSB by Porsche that this is normal expected behavior as I found out $300 later for the diagnosis fee.

Has the weather turned colder are you are still using summer tires? If so, what you are feeling could be due to the temperature. Summer tires don’t like cold weather and do funny things when cold.

Question:
Why use the fill hole at all for fluid transfer if we need to do final fill through the breather?
