Hello,

This not really a complaint, My turbo started to shudder when I was backing up and when I put it drive it would shudder in 1st, 2nd and a little in 3rd. The car has 14k miles. I brought to the dealer and it turns out that the transfer case has gone out. The dealer was great.
We are awaiting new cv joints that Porsche recommended to be replaced also.

The car has been a great car, this is more of a heads up to all on this forum.

The transfer cases fail without regard to whether a vehicle is driven gently or aggressively. The part is just not up to Porsche standards and does not last, which is surprising given that Audi (the vehicle is basically an Audi and is full of Audi branded parts if you start looking under the hood) is an AWD pioneer). So long as you are under warranty for the TC, the dealers are great about it. They get paid by Porsche to make the repairs. I hope your replacement lasts. After my original TC lasted between 40-50k, the next two failed very, very quickly.

The transfer case in the Macan is designed and built by Magna, for Porsche. It is not used in the Torsen Quattro system used in the Gen-1 Audi Q5. (The Macan is based on the Gen-1 Q5). The newer Audi "Ultra" Quattro systems use a similar transfer case (really just a multiplate electronically adjustable-slip clutch), also built by Magna, which seems to have similar "judder" problems.
It seems Porsche and Audi are not requiring stringent enough durability testing from Magna Automotive.

2017 GTS CPO 27k miles - was on it from standstill a few weeks ago (in Sport+, manual shifting) - major hesitation and delay when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. No lights on the dash.
Then noticed regular shifts seemed louder than before (in Auto mode w Sport) and the rumbling when crawling in traffic.

Car is in w the dealer - they agreed on the TC replacement as a CPO.

Also have small amount of movement up front when descending over a speed bump at low speed (feels like loose bushing) - also covered under CPO

And to complete the trifecta - got a nice big front windscreen chip on my way to the dealer 😖

Have a base Macan to pootle around in for now. Miss my GTS...

Sounds to me that your transmission is starting to fail, I hope I am wrong. there is huge thread on rennlist about the DL501 transmission is what is in our Macan's unless you have a macan Turbo then you have a ZF PDK not a Borg Werner

2017 Macan GTS, about 61k miles. I'm currently on a road trip and about 600 miles from home. TC just started acting up. 1st & 2nd gear stuttering from a standing start etc. I'm not seeing any posts about catastrophic failures that would leave me stranded. Closest Porsche dealer is 250 miles away.

I'd normally just keep driving until I get home but I've also got my elderly in-laws riding along on this trip.

Can anyone comment on how long you can keep going once the TC starts exhibiting these failure symptoms?

Update to this earlier post. Made it home just fine. Thanks @VAGfan for responding to my question. Drove about 1000 miles before getting the TC replaced at the dealer last week under warranty. Looks like they replaced it with the exact same part number, 95B-341-010-LX. I have a few questions about the repair but haven't been able to talk with my SA since the work was done.
  1. New or rebuilt TC installed?
  2. Warranty on newly installed TC?
  3. Break-in procedure if any?

Well hunted! Do you mean it's the replacement they use for relatively new cars? My memory of this saga is that with older cars they replace failed units with a re-build [that often fails quickly] while for newer cars they use new replacements.

I don't know, though I've read that it's discretionary, with Head Office giving local branches some spending money that can be used where they think it best. At 50,000 miles I've had no trouble of any sort with my car but I did get a bit paranoid and asked my nearest Porsche dealer if they could check the TC and replace it if necessary. The answer was yes to the first bit but no to the second. I do know of one Aus. member of this forum who had the TC changed twice in 50,000km before he sold his car. Mine is on the market.

Yes, thanks, it passes the test but I do like to keep ahead of any potential problems and that's clearly one for some cars. Oddly random though. Water in the TC seems to be the likely cause so on the other side of the coin, if they're kept dry, maybe using a breather of some sort, they could last indefinitely.

My 2016 macan is waiting on a new TC part as covered by warranty. Unfortunately, parts are not as readily available and may take awhile before it can be replaced. 2 questions please:
1. Is it ok to drive the car as is given the TC issue with the jerking / stuttering behavior?
2. Is it ok to deactivate the TC by unhooking the wiring into it?

thanks for any insight

May car in normal mode, when reversing is fine on full lock, both directions When I put it in OFFROAD, reverse, and do full lock, I get the grabbing, jerking. Is this indicative of a Transfer case issue ? or Ackerman ?
I would think if Ackerman I would have the problem in normal mode ? but I do not.

I think there's a reference somewhere in this forum to Porsche introducing a shorter period between fluid changes for the TC.

Can anyone point me to the relevant posts and any more recent Porsche bulletins/standards for TC fluid changes?

My 2016 Macan S started juddering on inclines when cold so I took it in to my dealer the other week and, yeah, add me to the list too.

However, when I got it back something wasn't right at all. the steering is now super light with noticeable play at city speeds and an uncomfortable "wobble" at hightway speeds, almost like a tracking/balancing issue. The car also threw a "No all-wheel sys" error the other day which it has never done before. I suspect the "new" (LX) transfer case is faulty right out of the box which is worrying. I just took it back to the dealer, hopefully they can sort it out this week while I'm on vacation.

Took my 2015 Porsche to the dealership mid last year to get them to take a look at my transfer case. I was getting some stuttering when accelerating. They kept it for a few weeks but couldn't reproduce the problem and said it was fine. They specifically said transfer case was fine when I asked.

It's been steadily getting worse. Couple weeks ago it got to the point where I could be on a flat surface and just release the brake and could feel what seemed like gears slipping. Accelerating from a stop on an incline and it was very obvious something was wrong.

I don't drive often and when I do it's usually short trips so the issues don't happen all the time (or sometimes they are very subtle). All the symptoms seem to clearly point to a transfer case issue. I've booked another appointment with the dealership.

So far I think it's more obvious when the car is warm so I'll be sure to drive around a bit before I go in. I'm looking for any other tips on how to make the issue more apparent so they won't simply charge me for a diagnoses and say nothing is wrong.

Hi there, I have a spec’d 2015 macan s delivered 7/10/14. In all this time only the stereo has been repaired back in 2017 and a few recalls. Otherwise the car has been well maintained, flawless, in mint condition and fully serviced. Recently there’s been a vibration going uphill and once on the highway. I suspect it’s the famous transfer case issue. I’m out of the Porsche extended 7 year warranty and I have not brought the car to the stealership yet. I’ve read from others that the cost of tc repair is astronomical, hence my dilemma. I would like to trade up to a new macan gts but I’m worried of repeated transfer case failure. I tend to keep my cars till death do us part. Does anyone here know if Porsche has fixed the transfer case issue in the second gen macans? I could just keep trading up every four years but that’s no longer feasible for me. Thanks in advance.

If you've had the car maintained at a Porsche dealership rather than indie (the longer the better) perhaps bring the car in and have them check it out. While they're not obligated to do so, if it is a transfer case issue it's possible - after some encouragement from you - that may cover at least part of the expense as a matter of good will. Also, it's probably best to get the issue checked out sooner than later.
