Hello,

This not really a complaint, My turbo started to shudder when I was backing up and when I put it drive it would shudder in 1st, 2nd and a little in 3rd. The car has 14k miles. I brought to the dealer and it turns out that the transfer case has gone out. The dealer was great.
We are awaiting new cv joints that Porsche recommended to be replaced also.

The car has been a great car, this is more of a heads up to all on this forum.

60k and I've been noticing the transfer case issue for a while but could not identify it until reading the other messages in this forum. The way I described it was it felt like driving in a car where someone doesn't know how to drive stick. The lurching and hesitation felt to me like it was not getting enough fuel and/or air, or even a vacuum issue, and was about to stall out. Ironically I went before the warranty was extended on this issue, and the dealer could not replicate or identify the issue. They told me that it was not producing any codes. I had many classic and muscle cars in the past, and there are no ODC readers for those. You have to drive, listen, diagnose, and then test your hypothesis. I went to an old school mechanic who does just that, and he wasn't familiar with the car or the known issue, but said it "felt like the differential". So in 2WD world, that would be right. In Macan speak - it's a transfer case.

It went from annoying to dangerous when I almost got broadsided in an intersection.

Here's where it gets odd for me. I added a fuel system cleaner and nothing changed. I ran the tank down to as close to empty as I could, then refueled. After about 1/4 of the new tank consumed, the transfer case issue went away. I was able to sense it only on hard acceleration with a slight bit of "bucking", or after a "spirited" drive on the highway when it was nice and warmed up, then it would show its face again. I scheduled a service appointment and was told I would have to pay $300 for diagnostic if they cannot replicate it, but it would be waived if they can. I have no idea how hard they'll try or whether they'll even notice it now. I can't imagine one bottle of additive would resolve this. As an aside - the service writer said that the transfer case was the exact same that was in the original production. I asked if it were re-engineered or modified, and they said it was exactly the same.

Hi iCanMacan,

IMHO: You may indeed have a transfer case (TC) problem, but I think you also have/had a bigger problem with something in your engine. A fuel system cleaner would in no way reduce or resolve a TC problem and the more severe symptoms you were describing are not typical TC failure symptoms. Sounds to me you had some bad fuel, but I'm guessing.

See post 501 and 509 above for typical symptoms. Most people find the biggest tell is when they are in reverse, with the steering hard left or right at idle speeds, the car will jerk, slip or shudder. The worse the situation, the bigger the shudder. If you have air suspension, set it to off-road and it will make the symptoms 2X worse. You may also feel it when driving off from a standstill (subtle - feels like you are slipping on gravel) and sometimes you feel a shudder between gears 2 - 3- 4 during modest acceleration. I have not read anywhere the the TC problem will throw codes.

Paying for the diagnostic is normal but $300 seems excessive. It's about 1 hour work and I was quoted $150 USD ($200CDN). But I'm not sure that's your root problem, so I'd hold off on that till the engine problem is resolved. Few more tanks of quality fuel and if it's still there, have someone look at it.

The Service Advisor is wrong, the replacement TC is definitely modified. See post 511. Unless they are doing the replace TC fluid and add friction modifier route .... but if you are still under warranty, they should not be doing that in NA.

I just picked up. my '15 S from the dealer after having the Transfer Case replaced (I was not charged any diagnostic fee). No cost for the repair as it was entirely under warranty. I had forgotten how fun it was to drive this one. Been dealing with that issue for a while before I found the post and just wanted to thank you guys for bringing it to my attention. I was fed up and about to sell.

Question - does the TC cause any type of poor fuel economy? I've had terrible gas mileage for a while now, which coincided with the shuddering and the Engine Control Fault warning light which kept coming on for a few days then disappearing. Just wondering if that sluggishness was consuming a lot of fuel?

Again - many many thanks!

I have had my Macan S for a little over 3 years with no issues. 55k miles. 2 weeks ago I put new Continental tires on. Now, the transmission slips/stutters when shifting. When starting out cold it only does it from 1st to 2nd. After driving for a half-hour or so it starts doing it in every gear.Any idea why it's doing this?
Thx, Jim D.

Now up for my second transfer case replacement. MY16.
Original replaced by a remanufactured "X" unit at 28k (17.5k miles). Now at 50k (31k miles).
So the "X" version lasted only about 22k (13k miles). Actually less because it has been playing up for at least 5k but was rejected because their test drivers could not detect the obvious issues. I figured to just wait til there was no argument - it is now nearly undriveable.

Sorry to hear that. I assume you only have one Porsche dealer within a reasonable distance?

So I am getting some loud hard clunking sounds from the rear when under hard acceleration, especially if I accelerate hard out of corners. Is it the transfer case? I just did the off road test and I didn't feel anything strange, just felt like the tires were slipping a bit on the pavement which I assume is normal. Will try the off road test again on some smoother pavement like a parking lot or something.

I heard the clunking sound below me between my seat and feet. Can you further localize "from the rear"? Maybe just my impression, but I always felt the slipping and noise was coming from the front wheels. Maybe others have differing impressions.

Do you have Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), as it can sometimes make some clunking sounds and jerk the rear end a bit.

None describe the part or how it is different than the (older?) 95B341010X

I have a 2015 Macan S purchased new in June 2014 which had the transfer case replaced at 19k miles March 2019. Now in August 2021 at 27K miles the transfer case needs to be replaced once again. Porsche extended the warranty 7yrs so I was reimbursed $3000 for the first replacement. The 2nd replacement is 6 weeks beyond the Porsche extension period of 7 years. It is impossible to speak to anyone at Porsche about this recurring issue and to have them acknowledge they have used faulty transfer cases in their vehicles. How many others are in this same situation? Porsche should issue a recall on cars with this style transfer case.

Does anyone have any advice on how to speak to someone at Porsche executive level to discuss these recurring issues with the transfer case? The 800-porsche # is basically useless.

Hello. I would like to know what Porsche’s stance on extended warranty on the transfer case on a modded car (big turbo, ecu tune etc.).

Unfortunately my Macan started showing the symptoms of a bad transfer case and would like to know if they will cover it or not. I would like to mention that I had my dealership do the regular gearbox oil changes on a timely manner

You'll need to check your country's laws on that. In the US, The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects consumers by requiring the manufacturer to prove that the mod is responsible for the fault. I'm obviously simplifying things, but your laws should dictate how this issue is handled. I expect that the dealership will want to point fingers at your mods, so may have a fight on your hands. Good luck!

I'm in the US. I have a good relationship with my service advisor. He is well aware I have a Cobb tune on my 2018 GTS. He said nothing about my tune and he had my transfer case replaced with no issues. I did revert the ECU back to stock just in case any software updates and scans were necessary after the part replacement and flashed it back after I got the car back.

My 2017 Base (37k miles) started exhibiting the 'bumpy' feeling along with an abnormal noise under initial acceleration. My SA said one of the things they do to verify if it's the transfer case/box is to disconnect the front driveshaft and then road test the vehicle as a rear wheel drive vehicle to see if the problem remains or disappears. They confirmed that my transfer case/box was faulty, and much to my good luck, they had one in stock, so I was able to get mine diagnosed and replaced all in one day. They didn't give me any special instructions to follow for breaking it in.

Brought my 2016 Macan Turbo (64K miles) into my local German performance shop for an oil change and to have them confirm my suspicion - faulty transfer case. Scheduled for service first week of Jan at my local Porsche dealer (also having them provide a advice/quote on timing cover leak. classic).

Will update with conclusion after the scheduled service!

What were the symptoms that led you to think you had a tranfer case issue? I have a 2018 GTS with 36K miles that I have owned for about 8 months. The one thing that bothers me is a low rpm shudder when accelerating slowly from a stop or driving with light throttle in 6th or7th gear. I assumed this was just some turbo lag, but maybe it is related to the transfer case?

As for the symptoms I was experiencing- I was starting to feel a shuddering sensation at slow speeds, like when leaving from a stop. Once I got some speed going everything smoothed out. Along with the shuddering I was also getting a subtle noise, also only upon initial acceleration. My dealer diagnosed the issue as being the TC, and they fortunately had one in stock, so I was in and out on the same day; issues are all gone now.
