Suspension system fault

So, it's happened to me, which was something of a surprise. At just under 20K the front suspension has lowered, and I have a PASM fault in the dash. Was making some weird noises before hand for about 10 kms and then failed. I was about 300 Kms away from home, actually across the alps so had to drive a mountain pass with the car in this state.

I am surprised the back doesn't lower a bit too so as to make the car more balanced. The lowering button no longer functions so you can't do it manually.

The front emergency springs seem to work fine, obviously not with the same ride quality as before.

Apologies for the bad picture, and I assure you it looks worse in reality than in the picture.

Car goes into the dealer this week. I really hope it is an easy repair, and that I am not blamed or charged for some unknown reason like a punctured air spring!

This just popped up, Has any one dealt with this yet? If so what did they find? Turning car off it resets for a few miles then comes right back on. No suspension at all.... Its going into dealer in AM , just a PIA to take a new car in.... Should i be concerned? Thanks

Yeah, I bought the Porsche extended warranty primarily to protect against air suspension failures (no issues so far at 19k km). Warranty price was less than 1/4 the air bag repair cost on my wife's old ML320.

What suspension do you have? Base steel, PASM, or AS?

#41 ·
We'll ITs fixed.. Left front Electrical cable was "routed in a compromising area on a bracket" that when i went over an area in the road at speed caused the car to flex down and "pinching"
this wire. Hmmm.. Lets hope all other corners are not routed the same way... :)

Oh, yes, all under warranty. Had a chance to drive a "Macan", not a turbo, or S or GTS, but a plain one, not bad....

Weird noise when starting the car

So this morning I started my Macan in my garage as I normally do and I heard a very strong noise like something was scratching in the front of the car. It last about couple seconds and was gone. I immediately turned the car off and back on and no noise at all. I was not sure if it was coming from the engine compartment or from the air suspension. Turned the AS off and on again and it functioned normal. Drove the car about 20 minutes to my office and parked there. Used the car again around lunch time and no noise. At the end of the day I turned it on again and went to pick my kids at school. Turned it off when I got there and once I got my kids I turned it back on and the same noise came again. I again turned the car off and back on and no noise.

Any thoughts? I am not sure where it is coming from and my concern is if I take the car to the dealer I won't probably be able to replicate the problem when I am there. :(

This is probably what was happening when I posted this thread last time http://www.macanforum.com/forum/complaints/150753-weird-noise-when-starting-car.html

Tonight I parked the car in downtown and went for dinner. When I came back and started it a huge clunking noise came from the front of the car like the car was breaking apart. Noise stoped after maybe 10 seconds and it was exactly what I described on the my previous thread. Drove fine for couple miles and then the following warning came on: "Suspension System Fault: Adapted driving permitted". I noticed the button that moves the suspension up and down is red in the center console (which means the suspension is lowered) but it does not turn off when I press. Will call the dealer tomorrow morning and see what they say. They got the car there two weeks ago for the same noise and could not find any problems and returned the car without doing anything. The big issue is that they did not have any loaners available until last week when I called trying to get the car back there for the same noise and this will be a very short week or work for them. Not sure if it is safe to keep driving the car like this. Thoughts?

Wish I could help you and let you know it’s safe to drive but I don’t have AS. Good luck getting it fixed hopefully nothing serious.

#51 ·
with the short week, definitely issue in them getting to it - would ask for them to cover a rental if they are unable to provide a loaner.

I drove 400 NJ, PA and CT miles with the Macan chassis completely lowered due to a suspension fault (bad suspension control board). The ride was equivalent to a Prius I once owned. I would not worry about driving it.

#53 ·
agreed, given that it says adapted driving permitted.

Waiting for the facelifted version to come out. I won't drive this car or any German car a single mile outside the warranty.

Talked to my SA at the local dealer and he advised me to keep driving since the warning message is yellow so should not be a big deal. I have an appointment with a loaner for next Monday. Car drives fine and suspension is very smooth but it is very boring as Sport and Sport Mode is disabled. :( Will keep you posted.

Also, can Geico drop you (or raise your premiums into the stratosphere) if you have a car that needs repeated expensive repairs?

UPDATE: Dropped the car at the dealer this morning to check on the "Suspension System Fault". As a reference, I have been driving the car with this warning since last Tuesday as I was informed by my SA that it was safe to drive and I had an appointment for this Monday. The car drove fine but air suspension was disabled so was Sport and Sport Plus modes. My SA called me a few hours after I dropped the car to let me know that the air compressor that sits under the driver's seat and controls the air suspension has burned out and needs to be replaced. Apparently this was the first case in all Macans serviced at that dealer (they had several similar issues with Panamera) and he said they were surprised to see that on the Macan the compressor managed to leave the car all the way up (like off road mode) where on the Panamera when the compressor goes bad it brings the car all the way down. Anyway, a new compressor was ordered and it should be replaced by tomorrow. Will keep you posted once I get my car back. In the meantime I am enjoying a brand new Panamera as a loaner. :)

@santastico - Sorry to hear about your issue with the air suspension. I love having it, but still somewhat live in fear that mine will fail at some point. Probably the main reason why I purchased an extended warranty. Is your's still covered under the original warranty? Hope so...

#64 ·
Yes, still covered under warranty until February 2019. I also have Geico's MBI until 2021 but depending on when Porsche brings the facelifted Macan I will probably get a new one before this goes out of warranty. I also had many concerns when ordering air suspension but I would order again and again in any future Porsche. I just love the feel and how the car looks when you drop the suspension. I will ask my SA when the car is ready how much would that service cost me if I had no warranty.

Got the car back today. The repair sheet says the fuse was blown and the air suspension compressor had to be replaced. Air bellows had to be drained and filled again. Car is fine now. I asked the SA why this happened and he said usually it gets moisture inside. This happens very often on Panamera but my Macan was the first one they had to replace. Out of curiosity I asked how much would it cost me if out of warranty. Around $3k.

Happy to hear all is well after repair. My S is now two years old and I hope the AS hold until I trade it in in a couple years.

suspension faults

hey guys ..

I had a similar issue last winter, but one of the wires to the front-driver side suspension was cut, and they replace the shock (unsure if required) and the wire. Not sure what the cost may have been. Porsche Roadside Service was able to cover the flat bed costs to the dealership in that case - they advised at the time, against driving it (dealership was 400km's away).

That said, I got another suspension fault yesterday, after driving ~900km's from NB.ca to Montreal. The temperatures are quite chilly this week - down to -25c for the last couple days. My air height seems to be working - i can switch to offroad, normal and lowered height, but the shocks are in a super-stiff mode, and the ride is best described as bouncy. Not comfortable. Have a return drive (another 900kms) to do on wednesday, and hoping I can get this resolved before then. A friend is going to let me store it in his heated garage over night, to see if this is related to something being frozen up, and a warm night inside resolves it. If that doesn't help, I'll probably try to reach out to a dealer here in Montreal to see if they can take a look at it Tuesday or Wednesday morning. Driving back home for 800km's (back to NB) won't be much fun with the suspension in this state.

Has anyone on here had issues with their air suspension acting up with extremely cold temperatures, below -20c?

So I have an interesting problem.

It was really cold almost 3 weeks ago and my AS fuse blew like @jooster54 in the post above. I replaced the fuse in the trunk and everything was working perfectly until today.

It is above freezing today. I was just cruising and the ‘Suspension system fault, adaptive driving permitted’ yellow warning came up again. ~500 miles after the fuse replacement.

I can still get into normal, low, and off-road modes with the AS. I couldn’t 3 weeks ago when the fuse blew.

Now the PASM button won’t work. Car won’t go into Sport or Sport + mode either.

Ride was extremely choppy. All the damping is gone. The exact scenario described in the post below by @Dwight Spencer.

Do you guys have any ideas?

2015 Turbo with AS. Almost 70,000 miles.

TIA

I've been getting a random suspension fault. Only happens when in sport mode and the only thing that happens is that it kicks me out of sport mode. The message pops up and disappears as soon as it automatically deactivates sport mode. No messages stored or anything. Happened a handful of times right after I passed 5K miles. But this morning, it happened repeatedly within a few minutes of me turning sport mode back on so I made an appointment with the dealer for Monday. This would be dangerous/annoying if I were doing spirited driving on a curvy road.

Mine started out with random fault warning that would kick me out of sport mode. I'd drive a bit, turn sport mode back on and it would be fine. But it happened 4 times this morning and then this afternoon, compressor under my seat sounded like a garbage disposal. But no faults on the drive home.

I made an appointment for Monday but suspect a not reproducible diagnosis as I can't capture the events on video or photo since it's so random.

Dealer found random incomplete circuit in the air suspension module and repinned all the connectors. Was fine for exactly a week and then it happened again. Don't know when I have time to take it back again.
