Nokian WR SUV3 Winter Tires

With previous cars I owned, I used Nokian winter tires (Hakkapeliitta) and was very happy with the handling, the grip, the durability, etc ...

I have no experience with Porsche and was wondering if anyone would recommend or not to go with Nokian's WR SUV3 tires or any non manufacturer "approved" tires, whatsoever ...

Winter tyres / SUV / 4x4 / Nokian Tyres

What do our friends from Europe have to say, where the Nokian brand is most likely more popular than here in North America (NA user input is also welcome obviously!) ...

I know winter isn't anywhere near (actually summer hasn't even started yet), but I'm curious to know ...

Thanks,

Personally, I won't hesitate too much to use non Porsche approved winter tires as long as the load and speed ratings are appropriate for the intended purpose.

As for the WR, it's not a true winter tire. I will likely go for the Hakkapeliitta in some form as I've found them to be excellent performers previously.

Sizing for the stock 18's and 19's appear to be available in both the Hakkapeliitta R2 and Hakkapeliitta 7 (studded)......not so much luck for those who want to run 20's or 21's unfortunately. Both great tires though.

Studless might be needed for a rwd car, but the performance snows do an adequate job with awd, and a far superior job the other 95 percent if the time your driving on cold dry pavement. Speed rated to 150 mph, much better wear ratings, quieter ride. Might cost a bit more, but they work so well, some even run them in spring and fall too.

Michelin pa3, Dunlop winter sport 3ds. Both are extremely good winters for high performance vehicles. I used the dunlops on my s8, and the pa3s on the S4.....even did a track day on them. Studless would have been pulverized on the track.

Nokian winter tires are very popular in north Europe and also here in Russia where Nokian holds more than the quarter of the winter tire market.

After long years of driving in heavy winter conditions, to my experience Nokian tires are the best choice for harsh winters and I highly recommend them. Nevertheless, the right tire choice depend too much to the climatic conditions where you leave.
Tires like WR SUV3 or WR D3 (sedan) have very good if not excellent performance on dry or wet asphalt surfaces as well as on slush and snow but ice. Those are the ones that I use in Turkey during winter on my actual Honda Euro Accord.

Hakkapeliitta R2 SUV or Hakkapeliitta R2 (sedan) are more suited for harsher winters with lot of snow and some ice. I use Hakkapelitta on my Volvo S60, in Moscow during winter as I drive mainly in the city and don’t encounter too much icy situation and until now I never had any problem except once during ice storm which is in my humble opinion the worst winter condition that you may ever face.
Studded tires like Hakkapeliitta 7 SUV are excellent on snow as well as on ice including wet ice, but not so much on dry or wet asphalt.

By wet ice, I mean very slippery ice when the road surface temperature fluctuates between -5 to 3 degree Celcius (23 to 37 degree Fahrenheit). Except studded ones, all other winter tires perform poorly on wet ice. However, when the temperature is below -6 degree Celcius or 22 degree Fahrenheit, ice starts to be very sticky and studless winter tires perform relatively good.
In snow, winter tires performances are similar regardless studded or studless.

Personally, I will use WR SUV3 tires with 18” wheels during winter and OEM Michelin Latitude tires with 19” wheels during summer in Turkey.

As others also wrote, I strongly suggest to not use large winter tires with 20” or 21” wheels but to stick to the narrowest width with 18” or 19” wheels, such as 235 front and 255 rear.

I use Hakka R2s on my Cayman S and they are outstanding. Minus one fitment. They have won all major international tests and are well ahead of the usual suspects. Michelin Ice-X also does well.

I think the Hakka R2 SUV sizes may fit the Macan and would be a great choice if they do. Have not looked yet.
