MY 17+ Apple CarPlay retrofit

Last Thursday evening I left my tiger at the dealership I bought it from to have Apple CarPlay and S+ retrofitted, now that both upgrades have officially been released.

Yesterday I picked it up in the afternoon, and it all works nicely. We had a brief scare when my phone would not bring CarPlay up on the PCM display, but we finally figured out that it was an issue with my (non-Apple) cable. We used a Porsche lightning cable (which I had also bought during my visit at the dealership) and it worked wonderfully, for anyone interested. Just be aware that this retrofit is just adding the Apple CarPlay functionality; it's not (or in my case it has not been) a full Connect retrofit. The Sport Plus button also does what it's supposed to do, and the retrofit also adds the SC screens on the main display and on the MFD. At the same time they also updated the PCM software to the newest release; very nice of them.

Whereas CarPlay is very nice and useful, the S+ button just transforms the car. I think I have mentioned a couple of times that in my GTS I was missing that kick in the back I had experienced when testing the turbo back in the day before buying the GTS sight unseen, and I thought it was down to the additional displacement, horsepower and torque, but now with S+ I also feel that kick on acceleration when PDK shifts gears, and even if the car may not be much faster, it definitely feels faster; totally another beast. I start to understand those who say that once you try S+, Sport becomes the new "normal".

For the sake of completeness of my report, I had a pretty well optioned Macan S as a loaner (full black leather, SC, pano roof, PSE...), and my salesman is such a nice person that he left me a little note with a chocolate to "sweeten up my pitstop", as he wrote. Talk about customer service!

Pics or it didn't happen? Of course it did happen :)

Congrats, love mine. Bought mine in the middle of January.
Supposedly easy as having the dealer download and install the software, like adding a new program onto a computer. Buy the license key and they install it. I’m just having the issue of finding a dealer to do just that. The ones near me want to do the stalk too.

Car is at the dealership now. I told them I wanted carplay installed and that with research I found that it could be installed without the stalk. They price matched online pricing for the license key, and got a total quote for $650 Installed. No questions or upsells for the voice activation stalk. Maybe theyre making excuses because you bought your own license key? call again and see if you can get a different service person that knows what they’re talking about?

dropped my 2018 turbo at the dealer this morning for two warranty issues & asked if they could add carplay. at first, the SA told me it wasn’t possible, so i showed him the part on suncoastparts.com. he disappeared for a few minutes and when he returned, he told me they could do it.

he then asked if my vehicle had voice control & navigation, which it does, and he quoted a price that matched the suncoast price. they do have to order a part, which will add a day to the service, so i’ll pick it up tomorrow and report back.

if anyone is interested in adding carplay but has questions, let me know what they are and i’ll ask when i return to pick up my vehicle.

Went to my appointment at Porsche Norwell, Norwell MA. Service advisor was great, took the car right in as soon as I got there, took close to two hours, at first the software took, but they said there was an error that carplay wouldn’t come up every time. They updated the entire electronics something or other, and then did the software update again and it was perfect. Charged one hour of labor.
They were great.
Now loving my carplay with no additional stalk!!

Nice! Glad everything worked out. After finding a leaking timing case, they broke a vacuum line, and had to order the part. Going on 1 week without the car now ?. My loaner car does have apple carplay though and I’m definitely glad I’m installing it

got my car back today and carplay worked flawlessly. total bill, after tax, was $911. a bit pricey for something that is now standard in most new cars but glad i added it.

also had the squeaky steering wheel issue fixed and a faulty fuel door lock replaced.

Did they add the stalk with the button on the end? Seems like a lot for just carplay software and like a great deal if they added the button? Porsche Nashua quoted me upwards of $1k to add the stalk and program it if I supplied the carplay software license key. I paid $500 for the license key from Porsche Atlanta, and Porsche Norwell did the install for $179.

I'm taking my car in for CarPlay retrofit; where are you finding it for $469 online?

So if I have a non-nav '17, will adding carplay give me the ability to use Waze on my PCM screen? I use waze normally and would love to be able to have it on screen vs. glancing down at my phone in the cupholder.

Guess we are specifically referring to retro-fitting?.... my ‘17 GTS has no NAV, but does have CarPlay. Works great/Love it... can’t stand factory NAV systems. And if I ever do for some reason need Satellite GPS, I use my (constantly updated) Garmin.

Apple CarPlay Hardware vs Software?

Does anyone know if special hardware is added to the PCM for the Apple CarPlay $360 option? Is there some special hardware it needs? Is it just software? Is the money for the license fee from Apple? I'm wondering what the money really goes towards. Thanks.

Not sure, I am guessing APPLE gets a piece and Porsche gets all the rest.

Probably a licensing agreement with APPLE

The only thing absolutely required is the software. That’s all I needed to retrofit it into my car. The other piece is the voice activation button on the turn signal stalk which brings up Siri, but not necessary for apple carplay to work.

IS it possible to get Apple CarPlay retrofitted into a 2015 Macan? I just found this online and it looks amazing but unfortunately they are located in the UK. Does anyone know how to get that done in the US?

Yea I’ve done it. Wireless and wired options. I got the one from aliexpress. Not an easy install though. There are a couple of threads here on it I posted instructions.

How do Carplay software updates get to the Macan if you don't have Connect (i.e just Carplay).

My mind on Carplay was changed last month when I was in Spain and rented a new Citroen C3 small SUV/crossover vehicle that had Carplay. The C3 was just OK, but I was really impressed with how well Carplay worked in that vehicle. Maybe it's just because I have an iPhone X now? or the Carplay software in general has improved? It was just so easy to use Google maps for navigation, and the map display was good. I'm thinking of getting Carplay added to my 2017 Macan, hoping that it will work just as well in the Macan, One thing I'm wondering about though is how would the Carplay software on the Macan stay up to date? My phone will get new versions of Carplay through iOS updates, but how do new versions get to the Macan? through my phone somehow? or will I have to go back to the dealer to get them to update it?

As long as Apple plays nice with CarPlay updates, I don't think you have to worry. My iPhone XS was just updated to iOS 13.1.2 which apparently made some updates to CarPlay, and the new CarPlay screen appeared automatically as soon as I connected the phone to the car (no update to the PCM).

Had the CarPlay install completed today. 17 Macan Base w/nav. Ordered the software, which arrived in the form of a laminated card containing the install code. Took the card to the service department and had them install it. Read through the directions with the tech and success. Initially it didn't work, but once you reload the modules, everything talks and CarPlay appears as a touchscreen option. Billed for one hour of service. Very happy with the results.

Cheers..

Hello, I have a 2018 Midnight Blue Porsche Macan.. I love this vehicle. I bought it used and apparently it is a base model.. I am a little bothered that it does not have Apple Car play.. I have tried to plug it in and upgrade phone and every video I can think of. I don't understand how this is not standard. My last vehicle it was. Does anybody know if I can upgrade the PCM. I have an iPhone 11 as well.
