MY 17+ Apple CarPlay retrofit

Last Thursday evening I left my tiger at the dealership I bought it from to have Apple CarPlay and S+ retrofitted, now that both upgrades have officially been released.

Yesterday I picked it up in the afternoon, and it all works nicely. We had a brief scare when my phone would not bring CarPlay up on the PCM display, but we finally figured out that it was an issue with my (non-Apple) cable. We used a Porsche lightning cable (which I had also bought during my visit at the dealership) and it worked wonderfully, for anyone interested. Just be aware that this retrofit is just adding the Apple CarPlay functionality; it's not (or in my case it has not been) a full Connect retrofit. The Sport Plus button also does what it's supposed to do, and the retrofit also adds the SC screens on the main display and on the MFD. At the same time they also updated the PCM software to the newest release; very nice of them.

Whereas CarPlay is very nice and useful, the S+ button just transforms the car. I think I have mentioned a couple of times that in my GTS I was missing that kick in the back I had experienced when testing the turbo back in the day before buying the GTS sight unseen, and I thought it was down to the additional displacement, horsepower and torque, but now with S+ I also feel that kick on acceleration when PDK shifts gears, and even if the car may not be much faster, it definitely feels faster; totally another beast. I start to understand those who say that once you try S+, Sport becomes the new "normal".

For the sake of completeness of my report, I had a pretty well optioned Macan S as a loaner (full black leather, SC, pano roof, PSE...), and my salesman is such a nice person that he left me a little note with a chocolate to "sweeten up my pitstop", as he wrote. Talk about customer service!

Pics or it didn't happen? Of course it did happen :)

I purchased a 2017 Macan GTS with NAV and failed to add CarPlay to the package. It appears now you can add it but I am not sure what the benefit is - mostly want it to connect to Waze and show the Waze screen on the PCM display rather than my cell phone.

I have just picked up my 2017 Turbo PP on Friday and it is awesome (see photo). It has "connect plus" and the latest PCM 4 but no LTE slot because it was delayed for the Australian market. The PCM screen shows an LTE symbol with a strike through it indicating no SIM card installed. You can buy an LTE modem but it just delivers a WiFi hotspot. I take it the software is all there, but there is no SIM card slot on the interface between the 2 smart card slots. The latest turbo PP has the same PCM with an LTE SIM card slot and the functionality. That version is available for order now. Does anyone know if I could have the Sim card slot installed as a spare part and get the LTE function of my PCM working? It is important to me because of the internet connectivity delivering accurate traffic updates and rerouting to the navigation, and internet location searches, calendar - phone app synchronisation etc...

Hi, i have a 2017 Macan S.

My dealer says it's not possible to add the CarPlay software.

What should i tell them to do to see that it's possible?

Thanks!

Just show them the link to Suncoast Porsche part where it shows the kit/product is available. However like other stated it depends on your VIN#. When my Macan arrives in couple weeks, I will request the dealer install the CarPlay before I take delivery.

I added earlier in this thread the part numbers that correspond to the CarPlay retrofit; that may help. I had to provide the VIN before the dealer confirmed that the retrofit was possible, so it might also be that there is some difference between my MY17 GTS and your MY17 S that precludes the dealer from confirming the retrofit to you.

Hi ,

I have a MY 2017 Macan S without NAV ( no voice control of course).

It kills me not to have Siri in the Macan (my wife's car,) while my 2013 Dodge RAM has Siri support! The Macan was a low mileage CPO.

So after the installation as below

https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/SKU95BAPPLE.html

Does that mean I will have SIRI support as well as CarPlay? Is the extra $95 to add the "SIRI" button to the stalk on the left?

Thanks!

I finally heard back from my dealer about CarPlay. There seems, on the surface, to be a disconnect between whatever the part listing on the SunCoast web site comprises and what my dealer **thinks** needs to be done to upgrade my 2017 Macan S to have CarPlay.

The dealer basically wants to replace the steering wheel stalk assembly and miscellaneous other parts for a cost of $>1120 ( w/o labor) which is sadly getting a bit expensive. The software $ seems to be price gouging at its best.

The parts are
95B-044-900-07 Software ($621)
9A7-035-504-01 Antenna ($70)
95B-035-550-DD Connecting...($49)
95B-953-502-M Steering Stalk ($445)

I do not believe that the steering stalk is required unless you want to activate Siri through the voice command button on the stalk rather than by pressing the home button on the touchscreen or simply saying "hey Siri" if such function is activated on our phone. I also wonder about the antenna. And not installing those parts would reduce the labor content of your quote too.

I resolved the confusion with SunCoast - they are basically bundling the same parts, but with a discount over Porsche retail. They do quote a different part # for the stalk assembly - that would need to be resolved. I might beat up my dealer to match the price.

I had a Sport Plus retrofitted earlier this year and mechanically everything works as described but I never saw an upgraded Sport Chrono screens on PCM or MFD... it's MY17 Macan S... tech guy at the dealership said that it was everything that came with the "package". Am I missing something or US retrofit kit is different from European one?

I just got off the phone with Porsche of Westwood here in MA. I have a 2017 Macan S. I asked if my vehicle can be upgraded with Apple Car Play. I was told, no way, no can do, not a chance. I explained to them that there's a whole discussion about it on a forum. They said again, not possible. Am I missing something here? Is there a secret code word??

Our SA accidentally forgot to add in the build for our 2018 Macan S, our original request for the Porsche Car Connect. We were not billed for it, but to add this now as an aftermarket it was upwards of $7k USC.
So the next best option was to add the Apple car play. To have it added at this point, the dealer told us it was almost $2k, but we are getting charged $1k for the install. Not sure on the cost thing, since SunCoast charges $800 for the kit and dealer labor here is $149.00 an hour. They had to order parts to do the retro fit, not sure exactly, but I hope to find out later this week.

I will advise once I get the car back.

Well, we picked up our car this morning for the Apple car play install. All I can say is that it works perfectly. The dealer had a difficult time getting info from Germany to do install. The hard parts arrived pretty quickly, I say the box and it was rather small (kinda small ladies shoe box size). I did not open the box, but I could see the laundry list of part #s on the outside of it.

The SA said it took the tech over 6hrs for the install of hard parts. So for us, the 1k was worth it, plus no having to get the system updated every few years if we went with Porsche Nav. is saving us $$$$ in the long run.

Thanks for the information.
6 hours labor is roughly $1K, so with the SunCoast kit it sounds like full price would be about $2K.
I do find the # of hours hard to swallow. That are just taking off the steering wheel and replacing a stalk. Modern cars are meant to be plug-n-play , especially components like that with easy access.

6 hours was a bit too much. My dealer took 3 hours for the installation of CarPlay this Wednesday and the the software was $621.45 for the license key.

I showed my service advisor suncoast website and he proceeded from there. I was the first one in Buffalo to request this install and the tech said it was a breeze.

So on my 2018 build I ordered Voice control
PORCHE deleted it, the car will be ready this week.

What I want to achieve is telling the Nav where to go instead of inputting it.

I use iPhones, I do use waze but, but I prefer not using up data.
Suggestions?
Thx

Did you order Connect or Connect Plus? For CarPlay the navigation is through the Maps app so it still use data from my understanding. I have Verizon unlimited data so I am not concern with data usage. To install CarPlay the dealer will actually install the vocie activation stalk that was deleted from your build and can only use for Siri input. I did use Siri for NAV input and work well. The stalk is additional $464 on top of the $621 software key.

CarPlay

I purchased new MY17 Macan Turbo in August 2017 and was disappointed to find CarPlay was not included as
standard.
I would have expected this to be a standard item. Cars in Australia are expensive so after forking out $160,000 you can imagine how I felt.

I am trying to retrofit carplay to my 2017 GTS, I have seen where people have added just the software and the dealers are willing to do it. I live in NH and am willing to travel to get this done.
Has anyone had success at a dealer installing only the software and not the voice activation stalk? I have gone to 3 dealers near me in MA and NH and all will only install it with the stalk. We don’t use voice activation so don’t really want to pay for it. We already have the software license key, but now can’t find a dealer to code just that. They are all saying it won’t work or code without the stalk.

Any insight here as to a dealer that will do just the software? Anyone reconfirm they have done the retrofit with just the software?

You absolutely do not need to add the Voice Control. I had the CarPlay software only installed by the local Porsche dealer on my 2018 GTS - works perfectly. I access voice control by using the "Siri" white button (lower left on the screen). I'm in Austin so that doesn't help you much but there are other dealers in Texas that install CarPlay without adding the voice control. There are others on the forum who have done this too - maybe they will respond...and maybe they are closer to NH. Good luck.

I also just purchased a 2017 volcano grey gts last week! Love the car, almost fully loaded, but no apple car play. Is adding apple CarPlay functionality literally just a software upgrade, excluding the voice control stalk? No additional chips or connectors? Is there no way to install the software yourself?
