Approaching 5,300 miles and I am almost at the low oil mark. What brand and weight to add?

I live in the Bay Area, and the foreman at Burlingame Porsche told me Porsche fills the cars with 0W40, and the dealer uses 0W40 year around here. So that's what I used. I found the 5 qt jugs on Amazon for about $25 each, which is a really good deal. Plus, the large jugs are easier to use and you can recycle your old oil in them.

I'm worried about the Pennzoil change -- have not seen a word about Porsche changing from Mobil 1.

I also know of one documented case where the car suffered performance in many ways -- until the techs discovered that the owner had switched to an entirely different oil from Mobil 1. Porsche's new cars are so critically designed and engineered across some critical points.

I like having a warranty -- and would not relish a denial of any warranted repair service....

As long as oil is Porsche A40 approved, you should be fine.

I use Mobil 1 European 0w-40...
Not for long , discontinued by Mobil1!
Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 is the replacement, as I mentioned.

Ahhhh. The benefits of Porsche ownership. New owner here, will post thoughts and photos later. Loving my 2017 GTS!

I am at 5,000 miles, called my dealer to schedule an oil change and for $525 they will gladly change my oil and throw in a filter and a free coffee while I wait to boot! $525? My BMW dealer charged me $150. What are you all paying for oil changes? Money is not the issue for me. Just curious.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Macan is excluded. Says to consult owners manual.

Very interesting - Ill have to call my dealer and ask. But after reading the article and Mobil 1s website, Mobil 1 "ESP" stands for Emission System Protection "formulated to be compatible with cars that have the latest gasoline catalytic converters" - I wonder if this is only spec for new European models that now require gasoline particulate filters? - I dont know exactly what the new emissions laws are there and what cars they apply to, but maybe someone overseas can chip in.

#50 ·
So, Porsche now wants you to buy Porsche brand oil, instead of much less expensive other brands, that until now, have been approved by Porsche?

#53 ·
The link describes an oil specification for the newest Porsche gasoline vehicles using a
particulate filter in the exhaust system (something previously only found in diesel engined
cars).

It notes it is not backward compatible. Do not use this newer type of oil for your non-2019
vehicles. The Macan does not appear in the article.

You are free to roam about the cabin...

Mobil 1™ ESP

For vehicles with emission systems that have diesel particulate filters
Mobil 1 ESP advanced full synthetic motor oils are made with a proprietary blend of leading-edge components. They are designed to help deliver outstanding performance and protection in conjunction with potential fuel economy benefits.
Mobil 1 ESP oils help prolong the life and maintain the efficiency of emission systems in both diesel- and gasoline-powered automobiles. They are formulated to be fully compatible with passenger car diesels that have the latest diesel particulate filters (DPFs) and gasoline catalytic converters (CATs).
Of the product lineup, Mobil 1™ ESP X1 0W-30 and Mobil 1™ ESP 5W-30 oils meet or exceed the requirements of many leading industry and car manufacturers’ standards required for newer modern diesel- and gasoline-powered passenger car engines.
Of the product lineup, Mobil 1™ ESP Formula 0W-40 is the first and only dexos2™-approved motor oil developed specifically for Chevrolet Corvettes. I cannot get direct verification that Mobil 1 ESP 0W-40 is available in USA or meets Porsche C40!

Right, but I thought Porsche calls for 0w40 or 5w40. Never seen that at Costco, at least here in New Jersey.

#57 ·
We have 5 vehicles that use 0w40 including 2 BMW's for which Mobil 1 no longer meets the factory spec (unless something has changed in the past year or two).

So to simplify I use Castrol as it meets Porsches, BMW's and MB's spec. Every once in a while Walmart runs a sale on 5 quart pails in the $18-$19 range and Amazon matches their price, at which point I load up as I need more than 40 quarts to change the oil on all the cars.

Wanted to start some DIY of my 2020 base macan to learn a few things. When I got ready to search the oil (the manual does not specify type), I found some conflicting data. The dealer said they use 0W-40 Mobil 1 but Suncoast specs Mobil 1 0w-20 ESP. I am assuming either is OK but wondered if anyone with more experience had any other thoughts?

What does your MY2020 manual state for the viscosity?
And what is your climate? Usually you are given a range depending on typical temperatures you will experience.

Don't worry about the brand name as long as it is a major, well regarded, full synthetic brand; Mobil-1, Pennzoil, etc.

#60 ·
The manual doesn't call out a viscosity at all. First time I have seen that. I wonder if it is an effort to push you to the dealer. Part of the reason I asked the dealer what they would use but then when I went to order on Suncoast I saw they were recommending a different weight. I live in Chicago so highs in the summer can be in the 90s and lows in the -20s if its really a cold winter.

#61 ·
Mobil has an oil selection guide on their website:

#63 ·
0W-40 s/b fine for you in Chicago.

#65 ·
I would not use 0-w20 on my car. Unless maybe you were going to change oil 2x/yr & use 0w-20 only in winter & 0w-40 or 5w-40 in summer.

You may want to peruse this:

And their forums.

#68 ·
Can they point you to somewhere where it is in print from Porsche? I did see some suggestions of 0-20 for the 2.0L engine on Rennlist.
