Macan 2022 - Tinted LED headlights option?

Hi All,

Silly question perhaps,

Description for tinted headlight option is:

“LED main headlights with same functions as PDLS in distinctive design. Selected internal parts differentiated in Black. Same function and geometry as LED main headlights including Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus)”

I was looking at a standard Macan headlights and the lens seemed to be tinted and the light elements were black (apart from the lLEDs which were silverish).

What does this option actually bring to the table?

Yes, GTS LED lights already come tinted per your description above. The option adds the PDLS PLUS feature, which is:

"PDLS Plus also offers with this configuration a dynamic main beam control with continuous range adaptation based on prevailing traffic and navigation-based Intersection Assistant that activates the left and right static cornering lights for improved illumination of the surrounding area at intersections and junctions"

I hope that helps.

I have done so much research in this area !

PDLS+ mainly refers to the option of having the high beams on all the time and the car automatically tailoring the beam to not annoy other road users.

All lighting technologies for all German car makes are actually from Hella. A company older than any car maker !

PDLS+ for Macan in USA uses a very basic system whereby the high beam simply switches on and off when it sees a car in front no matter which direction the other car is travelling. This is called "High beam assistant".

PDLS+ for Macan just about everywhere else uses what is called "dynamic main beam" which Porsche describes as a stepless adaptation of the main beam depending in traffic conditions.

In reality it is a step up from the US on/off but still quite primitive. It uses a rotating piece of plastic in the headlight with exact cut outs to tailor the high beam as to not dazzle other drivers. See the video below. It is actually the Hella VarioX system. (BMW used a slight modification whereby they split the high beams in combination with the VarioX).

Better than this is the system used in audi with a 25 element matrix of LED's to tailor the light. Even better is the 84 element LED matrix used first by Mercedes benz and is what is currently used in the Cayenne. The best Hella system is used in the Audi E-tron and future electric Mercedes Benz EQ models with 1+ Million element LED's whereby they can draw patterns on the road ahead.

Yes, Porsche charges us a mint for the most primitive tech. The VarioX system. I would have thought that with the second refresh we would be upgraded to some form of Matrix High beam but it is not to be :(

Bottom line. Get the PDLS+ if you live outside of the USA and do a bit of country driving.

Hi,

In my opinion this is a classic rip off from Porsche.

I have a GTS, with the optional PDLS+ .. which in real world use is just an automatic on off like the one my Mercedes C class had in 2004.

No cutting shadows as it should do in theory. Whenever there is incoming traffic, close cars in front, or anything the system identifies as such, it switches to low beams.. that’s it

Also not very clever in mountain winding roads, where I have to use it in manual mode

Sad .. and expensive

Aside from the high cost, my major complaint is that the auto high beam on/off isn’t active until about 35 miles an hour. This is an arbitrary setting by Porsche and reduces the usefulness in the area in which we live. Past BMWs with this option worked when you turned it on, regardless of the speed you were driving. I simply don’t understand why Porsche would cripple the system with the non-adjustable speed component.
