With the new facelift of the 2016 Porsche 911, Porsche has also announced a new generation of Porsche Communication Management. Here are details to-date about the new PCM.

New Porsche Communication Management including online navigation
A standard feature of the new 911 Carrera models is the newly developed Porsche Communication Management System (PCM), including an online navigation module. The PCM can be operated by multi-touch gestures on the seven-inch display, similar to a smartphone. Handwritten user inputs are recognized. Mobile phones and smartphones can now also be connected via Wi-Fi. Also new is the option of connecting an iPhone® to the PCM to utilize Apple CarPlay™.

Real-time traffic information is available for significantly enhanced navigation. It gives the driver a quick overview of the traffic situation and guarantees dynamic adaptation of the route to this information. Google® Earth and Google® Streetview are also being integrated for the first time to offer better orientation. Porsche Car Connect and the Connect Plus module can be used for remotely controlled vehicle functions, transferring destinations to the PCM for navigation and streaming music using third-party service providers via the PCM.

And some information for Australian readers:

New Porsche Communication Management including voice control

A standard feature of the new 911 Carrera models is the newly developed Porsche Communication Management System (PCM) including voice control. The PCM can also be operated by performing multi-touch gestures on the seven-inch display, similar to operating a smartphone. User inputs by handwriting are also possible.

While mobile phones and smartphones can now also be connected via Wi-Fi in some markets, mobile phones and smartphones can only be connected via Bluetooth (or USB) on new 911 models sold in Australia. This means new Google Earth and Google Streetview navigation functions will be delayed until later in 2017 when a new LTE telephone module is certified for Australia.

The smartphone tray being integrated for the first time in the centre armrest offers battery-saving charging and optimised mobile phone reception. Also new is the option of connecting an iPhone to the PCM to use Apple CarPlay.

However, the new Porsche Connect app – which can be used for functions such as remote control of vehicle functions, transfer of destinations to the PCM for navigation and use of music streaming services by third-party providers via the PCM – also gets delayed until the necessary back-end systems are in place early in 2018.

Have you tried this from my previous post?
I have a MY17 S with Navigation only. If you go to Tuner>Option>SET SiriusXM>Weather and traffic market, it allows you to pick specific regions. Then in the map upper right is an icon that looks like 3 sheets of paper. Tap that and pick Traffic. Haven't actually tried it to see if it works.
Has anyone got it to work?

Writing works fine, but I find it faster to use carplay/siri

Because it was before I found out whoever set up Porsche electronics ... Why have the ability to turn it on and not have it work.
The PCM has to work in multiple markets. In Aust. at least, turning traffic on does work.

Possibly it's related to satellite radio access.

I was so surprised to find this here that I had to go downstairs to the garage and try it out. You can indeed write on the screen with your finger!

Here's a quick video:

What I'm unclear about - and so far my dealer has not come up with an answer - is whether the Navigation pack for PCM bundles Connect (in Europe). You can't order Connect with the Navigation option; only Connect Plus. That suggests that Connect is bundled with Navigation, but no-one seems to actually know.

2017 Macan S here, No Nav, No Carplay, Bose System. Love it, but maybe thinking of putting in a nav with Carplay, now that new features are coming.

Anyone thinking of, or have replaced the head unit themselves? What are the top of the line units these days? Any sites you can point me to? Risks/Pros/Cons?

Thanks!

According to Porsche you can't "upgrade" the PCM to add voice, connect or connect plus...yes, even if you have nav, you can't just add voice. I don't know if they support an upgrade to add navigation. Remember like other cars these days, the electronics is linked and everything must work with everything else. It's pretty high risk and of course high $'s ($5000 range) to get a replacement PCM....even without installation.

This thread seemed as good as any ... I hope. Question for those few that have VC and Connect + on their 2017 Macan with PCM 4. Has anyone found a voice command for the Google online search function? I can certainly type it on the display, works fine, and I can send to car from the iPhone PCM Connect app, but neither the app nor the car seems to have a command to return an online Google search. All of the VC command in the manual for Navigation apply to the PCM nav unless I'm really missing something here. Thank you for any thoughts!

Audi MMI VC did this with the command "Online destination" and I could just follow that command with an address or business name, etc.

I usually plug-in my phone. As such, after I plugged it in I click on the "iPod" option for connection (not CarPlay). Once the system was connected I went to the apps section on the PCM to no avail.

Do I need to connect the phone to the car over wifi instead of through the cable?

Hey,
so in the 2017 macan with nav-- does it not have any traffic integration without the SIM card?
how much time comes with the sim card before they start charging to get it to work? how much is it a month?
I have a MY17 GTS. If I remove the SIM card the navigation screen asks for a wifi hotspot to connect to. While parked in my garage I have connected to my home wifi and traffic data and google maps work. While you are driving you can set your phone as a hotspot and enter the password on your navigation screen.
The AT&T sim you got from your dealer is for 3GB of data or 3 months from first use, which ever comes first. Once you use all the data or the time runs out it will stop working, and you need to visit att.com/Porsche to sign up for a data plan.

As far as I know, most inbuilt car Nav's suck because it's a money grap. Why can't they work with Garmin, so map updates could be lifetime through a single subscription and via a USB or something, and traffic free through the FM system?

#447 ·
I am OK with the data usage since Google traffic is available on more roads then the Sirius traffic I had on other navs (including my previous Cayenne). I found Sirius traffic to be very limited in coverage in my area and well as when I travelled.

Since I am essentially the only driver of my Macan, I am not sure why I would ever want a separate, dedicated SIM in my PCM when I can always tether the PCM to my (Verizon) phone which is always with me in the car.

However...that sounds too simple...and I'm sure I'm missing something. There isn't exactly any useful information provided by Porsche on this topic....so it's apparently learn as we go (or should I say learn as we pay).

Here are a few reasons for using SIM:
-Faster initialization time. I've tested both and when I use the SIM the RTTI and Google services are available faster after I started the car then if i tether
-Better reception since the SIM uses the cars external antenna
-Faster transfer rates. I noticed slightly quicker loading times for google services with the built in SIM. This is compared with tethering from a iPhone 6S with the same mobile operator.
-More convenient and you don't need to have internet sharing activated on your phone and hence not drain batteries. My use case at least is not to connect my phone for charging each time I drive and tether will drain batteries more.

Here where I live, using a SIM is a no-brainer instead of tethering. I have 3 SIM-cards connected to the same subscription and don't pay extra for extra SIM-cards. So it doesn't cost more to have a SIM-card in the tray. Maybe it is completely different in the US.

I also used to have the Sirius traffic in my previous BMW and Mercedes, and this version via online connection is WAY better. Very happy with it so far.

Possible to dim CarPlay at night?

2500 miles with the car and I'm starting to build a list of "issues". In the main screen in PCM mode (not CarPlay) the screen seems to dim automatically at night to a comfortable brightness. However, when in CarPlay mode I find the screen much brighter, and haven't found a way to adjust. Anyone know if it's possible?
