Hello,
I already read a lot of posts in the forum about CarPlay retrofit but did not find any comment about my problems.
I have a Macan S 2015 retrofitted with Joyeauto (well, a clone, anyway) since yesterday.
Well, I lost my center box usb power and both 12v plugs, I am not able to charge my iPhone through those...?
Also, when I am in Carplay mode, the parking sensors do not show on the screen, is it normal?
Thanks for any help...

Ye you can use Waze or Google maps via android auto with radio or jukebox playing no problem. The problem is you won't be able to hear commands from Waze or Google maps.

I tried your connecting Bluetooth audio to pcm first, played some music via BT aux then switched to android auto, but as soon as android auto loads the audio drops from Aux BT and is only available via aux.

I have found you can do mirror via USB cable and the mirror app, and then I can play audio via BT Aux. This proves its not necessarily the unit but the way android auto routes all audio.

BT Aux audio quality is sooo much better than Aux. Aux has some minor hissing and crackling.

One pro of the unit, is even if I am listening to radio, but have waze via wireless AA on screen, Google assistant still picks up commands such as call xxx and switched to Bluetooth call. Pretty Kool.

So just the audio quality is the issue still.

So, I finally received my CarPlay module yesterday…. My plan was to install it next weekend. But that plan went astray… you know me, I could not wait that long.

Besides, I have done this before, so it would only take like 1 hour. At least that’s whatI thought.

With that in mind, I started the installation yesterday night (at about 7pm). Remember I’m changing the Joye module by this Ebilaen module.

Well… it took 4 hours and a divorce threat 🤣…. Not what I had planned.

A couple of unexpected issues….

1. Taking the head unit out was OK. Opening it, I had to refresh the process, took longer than anticipated, even though I had done it 3 times before.

2. Took out the old board, installed the new one over the same stands… No issues. Connecting wires and passing them through holes, no concerns.

3. This is where issues started. After assembling everything, I connected the head unit to the car, and could only see half of the screen, like everything shifted to the right. That concerned me, so I disconnected everything and re-opened the head unit to check all wire connections.

4. When reseating the wires, I disconnected one of the ribbon wires that goes to the screen and the whole connector came lose (I accidentally removed the whole thing - leaving the pins exposed). That concerned me a bit, but I know that these connectors can be reassembled. It just takes time and patience because the darn pins are so small. That took about 30 minutes.

5. Assembled everything back and got it to the car for testing, and this time it worked well. However, there were a few times during the installation that the screen when blank, and only got resolved by disconnecting and reconnecting the main harness. I hope this is not going to be an issue going forward.

6. I reinstalled the head unit (not the trims at that point), but forgot to test the microphone (Siri). I thought that I had the factory microphone. So, when I tried it, it wasn’t active. I took the head unit out again (fortunately I had not reinstalled the trims)… and connected the provided microphone. I could not get it to work. The microphone doesn’t work. I need to figure that one out yet.

7. While I had the unit out, I decided to test some additional items, like the backup camera. So… backup camera didn’t come on when I put the car in reverse. Spent 30 minutes before I remembered that I needed to take the emergency brake off…. 🥴. Even then, I had to activate a few options in the settings for the system to switch to backup camera.

When everything was all said and done, it was 11pm… (4 hours!!).

Should’ve waited for the weekend!

Now, for the review….

The improvements over the Joye:

1. Speed of readiness. With the Joye, I had to wait for about 10 seconds before the system recognize my phone and hence CarPlay. With Ebilaen is basically instantaneous.

2. Audio: Audio improvement with Ebilaen is nominal, but it is improved. I still need to tune it, but sound is not as attenuated. But still not as good as with the direct iPod input.

3. Response: It seems that Ebilaen is more responsive and quick. When you change from AUX to iPod and back, it is very responsive.

4. Connection: so far, connection had been solid with Ebilaen. No dropped connection so far.

5. Compact: the installation is cleaner with Ebilaen. Just the board and some wiring vs board, module, wiring and dummy connector with Joye.

6. User Interface: much improved over Joye. Setup is easier.

The Quirks (so far):

1. When in iPod mode and using CarPlay over WiFi, I lose the ability to control volume with the head unit volume knob. However, the steering wheel volume knob works well. Fortunately, this is not an issue, as I have both the steering wheel knob and the Helix Conductor to control volume. I think this is due to the fact that the Ebilaen module takes control of the head unit volume control for CarPlay and it wants to control CarPlay volume when you are actually with the iPod.

2. Related to item # 1, when I connect through AUX, then I can control the volume in the head unit, but is different than everywhere else. The volume intensity is maximized by the steering wheel volume control, and the head unit can’t go above that max volume set by steering wheel. It can go down from there, but not up. It basically disconnects the two volume controls from each other. Hence why I lose control when in iPod. But don’t despair, everything goes back to normal when you get out of CarPlay. The only benefit with this is that it display a volume bar that goes from 0 to 40 (if that can be considered a benefit).

As for how I’m using it, I’m using it the same way as I was using the Joye module. Audio through iPod and displaying CarPlay wireless. Still no audio from GPS apps (other than Google Maps).

More to come on this, as I continue to learn and experience it.

What I can say for sure is that this is the last upgrade I make on my head unit…

PS: By the way, I didn’t bother taking a lot of photos or doing a DIY on this one, as this was masterfully done by @Don16. See earlier posts for a great video on how to do the installation.

Great work Santirx.

Should have re-watched my video lol! [emoji23]

I have been using for a few weeks now and absolutely no issues experienced.

Like you, when using wireless android auto I haven't experienced any dropouts in connection which seems much improved from joyauto. I had a 3 journey and used Waze via wireless android auto and it was spot on the whole journey.

The good news is there is a guy on rennlist who is a software developer and is likely to be able to resolve some of quirks such as volume control, 30 FPS, and investigating the audio quality issue with potential workarounds (bluetooth audio card).

I have no modules installed. I just fell down this rabbit hole this week.
initially I contacted a guy on Facebook who does the updates to pcm. Then was Told the 3.1 he can’t do. But that update uses the USB for wired CarPlay so I’m SOL cuz mine malfunctioned.

after a weeks of trying to understand stumbled and finally ended up with this thread and look promising.
Yep.. you need either a Joye module or an Ebilaen/Isudar type module, which you need to install inside PCM in order to add CarPlay to PCM3.1. There is plenty of documented procedures on how to do this DIY.

Yes thanks. I guess my initial ask was just about the USB , if it used the car’s USB to do updates and wired CarPlay etc then I’m doomed.

glad to know that there is a USB do these upgrade units, and I can proceed.

so, u would recommend the latest one? Ebilaen?
Yes. It is a cleaner installation, you don’t have the box module outside, and is quicker than the other module. I’m still in testing mode, but so far so good.

Correct.

But what I understand is that the issue is not necessarily the CarPlay module, but rather the native PCM AUX input that is user by the board, which is crappy.

Konkab is trying some solutions that you can try to improve audio quality.

Thanks. I agree. It stands to reason that if all the CarPlay/AA add-on modules feed PCM AUX, and if all those boards produce subpar audio, the problem lies in the PCM's signal path rather than the add-on boards' DACs.

BTW - in another recent post of yours (#184) you suggest that if a car has Bose then selecting AUX is OK. I have Bose in my car - but why would that matter? If the signal is the same crappy analog from AUX, then wouldn't the sound be similarly degraded from what it could be even with Bose?

One additional aspect I just noticed when in AUX BT and having Google Maps. The music will go down and if you have the NAV volume up, the turn by turn navigation will come out of the phone speakers. It sounds strange, but it does the work, because Google maps actually lowers the volume of the music, then you can hear your phone.

Only works when you disable “Play Voice over BT” option in Google Maps.

Question - did you get interference/hissing in standard form using intended Aux? I'm trying to remember if I always had interference/hissing prior to modifying cable to route audio via aux to usb adaptor.

I know factory AUX setup (when not using CP module aux) there is zero interference/hissing. But I can't for the life of me remember if I had the issue before I messed with wiring.

I'm starting to think the solution is to disconnect the ground wire going to the CP module board, only because the interference/hissing starts when car is started and changes pitch with AC fans switching on.

I don’t remember any hissing from AUX.

The interference I was referring to was the conflict between “Joye” Auto board Bluetooth and the AUX BT.

My board is similar to Joye but rebranded as MediaShoppe. I didn’t have to connect a wire to the fuse box like many Joye modules seemed to require. That was different.

Check the Macan CP video below for an alternate approach. I have not tried this, but it looks good.

It may save the Central Hook on the long dash piece long term as well…….see the video.

I checked out the method on the video and it does work but you do still need the same amount of force to pull vent. My guessing is like that video and like my vents, they had already been removed recently.

The force required to remove the first time is a lot! #

I agree. First time (virgin) a lot of force required. Once they lose virginity, easier to take out… not that much force…😊

This is comparable to the first time you are trying to get the gas hose tube inside the fuel tank. It just would not go in without a big push…. But after that, easier.

@santrix can you do me a favour and see if you get the below noises at high volumes when using wireless carplay via CP aux.

1. White noise
2. When connected to WiFi and Bluetooth, Interference noise, noticable when playing music at higher volumes. Definitely signal interference as noise goes if I disconnect or don't have any audio playing.

@Don16, I didn’t notice any hissing or interference when playing through CarPlay AUX. Not while music is stopped nor while music is playing at high volume.
