I've been staying in a few hotels/motels lately to be with a family member who is about to enter a clinical trial. as usual, I peruse the supply carts that the housekeepers have stationed in the hallways in the morning. More often than not, I palm a few shampoos and bar soaps. Is this stealing or dishonesty? If it's either of these, should I offer to compensate these establishments for the pilfered merchandise or should I be made to clean an entire hallway's worth of rooms as penance? If others have committed such thievery over the years, perhaps we should organize a "Pilferers Anonymous" group and clean an entire hotel/motel, give the staff the day off and pay them for their time plus a healthy tip...This reminds me of the time that I went to hear Buckminster Fuller speak. A man of many talents and a large worldview, Bucky invented the geodesic dome and the Dymaxion, that wonderful teardrop-shaped automobile, which I saw many years in Reno, Nevada, at Harrah's Automobile Collection. He spoke more about living right than he did about his accomplishments. One of the things that he spoke about was that when he used a public bathroom, he always left it cleaner than when he came in. I've embraced that behavior ever since, and that was around 1971. In the last week, I rode Amtrak twice and visited several bathrooms in world-renowned hospitals. Every time, there was paper trash on the floors and in the sinks and "liquids" on the floors, and every time I took a minute or 2 and tidied up these messes. As Bucky said, wouldn't you rather walk into a restroom that was clean than one that was not?

Your unpaid janitorial work may make up for your thievery
;)

If you're really serious re opinions on the 'pilfering," only take what you will use while staying in that motel/hotel. Then it is NOT theft, IMO, just saving the maid an extra trip to bring it to you.

If you are taking supplies to use at home, it is theft.

People probably steal everything not bolted down from hotels/motels. Some will charge you for stuff missing from your room like towels, robes, etc.

Do you really need their shampoo, soap? You can buy travel size stuff at stores (Target for example) You can buy (or reuse) small containers & fill with your preferred brand shampoo.

You're stealing. Pure and simple. Is your ramble about cleaning up after others your attempt at offsetting your character flaw? Seriously - only on this forum do you see stuff like this written.

So when I was a kid, going back 50 years, there was a place in upstate NY called the Jewish Alps, also known as the Catskills. Oh, it’s still there, now with casinos. Back then it was filled with resorts: Grossinger’s (my favorite), The Concord, Kutscher’s, The Raleigh, you get my drift.

These were huge, affordable hotels for weekend getaways for us po’ city folks who went on “vacation” once a year, often times with a club from somewhere (in my case, a women’s handball club) which “group buy” helped make it affordable.

So I’m about 10 years old in 1967 and we are in Grossinger’s and Jenny Grossinger, the doyenne of the family, is making the rounds of the thousand or more guests. We are in the nightclub watching the great comedians of the day and my mother, whose name, Penny, derived from the depression where she’d wait for her dad to come home from work to hopefully give her a few pennies to buy a stack of candy, was in the process of purloining whatever she could get her hands on: silverware, a drinking glass, you name it towels with the hotel name emblazoned on them which they encouraged you to take so others in your home would see them.

When all of a sudden Jenny comes over to our table, and my mom has a lap full of forks and knives. I’ll never forget it.

Jenny didn’t notice, or pretended not to. The show ended, it was a late Saturday night, and I get up, hug my dad and say I’m tired, lets go to sleep.

I look up and it wasn’t my dad but a perfect stranger.

You see, my dad slinked off so as not to be associated with my mom’s pilfering.

You’re stealing.

The rest of your message is somehow akin to asking for permission for your theft due to some unrelated good deed you do elsewhere. Not good.

Imagine if Bill Cosby tried to distract from his patterns of abusing women by pointing out that he donated millions to charities for children? Not good.

Agreed.

If one takes something without asking first, it's stealing.

Now if those toiletries were IN your room, then they are fair game.

I can relate to your story @MDJAK as my trek from the Bronx to the Catskills also brings back funny memories. I asked my Mom once why Grandma always carried a huge pocketbook, her reply was shhhah.

I couldn't believe how people acted at the Porsche Driving experience grabbing more than one bag of goodies at the end ( it was supposed to be one bag per participant ).
Glad that we taught our children right from wrong and not to take what didn't belong to them.

Seriously - only on this forum do you see stuff like this written.[/QUOT Your characterizing me as having a "character flaw" is generous. By such a strong reaction, don't you think I merit "kleptomaniac" or "recidivist"? As you may have noticed, this was in the "Off Topic" section. Given that many people travel a lot, I thought this might be a shared experience... As far as the 2nd part of my thread goes regarding Buckminster Fuller, this was in the "Off Topic" section as well. It was just another example of everyday life that many people experience. No attempt to make up for any of my shortcomings was intended.

Wow, I have FINALLY made the big time! Being in the same league with Bill Cosby has been a lifelong dream of mine. I don't know about you, but I think there's a wide gulf between pocketing some soap from a motel and drugging/molesting women. As I have said before, theses 2 separate topics that I mentioned were in the "Off Topic" section. I'm sorry if I may have conflated the 2.

I see nothing in the OP that breaks any forum rule and it was posted in the correct subforum. It's not my place to judge the actions of others but its probably not a good idea to let this thread continue.

OP, I'm sure you know what's right or wrong, what's legal or illegal, what moral or immoral. Otherwise, you wouldn't have posted this.

Time for this thread to die. If you really want to continue discussing this, let me know but a bit of reading a few laws might help you out.
