AutoGuide Tested: The Kenu Airframe Pro Smartphone Vent Mount

It’s no secret that there are a TON of smartphone mounts on the market right now, and given the sheer volume of dirt cheap offerings available across the web, it’s not always easy to separate quality from the junk that isn’t worthy of holding your long-dead 1st gen Motorola Razr. With that in mind, we recently got our hands on some gear from Kenu—the California-born smartphone mount company—for a closer look at how they’re trying to distinguish themselves from a huge pool of competition.

Rather than looking at their basic Airframe model, which realistically looks like just about any other vent-type smartphone mount, we went with the Airframe Pro. Retailing for $29.95, the Pro model is designed for larger/heavier phones, with a spring-loaded gripping jaw that opens from 2.3 to 3.6 inches wide. According to specification, this means the Airframe Pro can handle the massive iPhone Xs Max and Samsung Galaxy Note 9 with ease, but for our testing purposes we fitted it with a more mid-sized Huawei Mate 10 Pro.

A problem with these (and yes, I use one) is when your heat is on high it will turn your phone off. I hang mine as low as I can mount it to avoid this.

Prefer an Older Kenu

My wife and I use an older Kenu in the Macan, and are pretty satisfied with it. This is the one we use:

Let me note that we also own, have tried out, and relegated to a garage shelf, these:

Now, the newer Kenu ...

... has a spring-loaded clip. I don't like such clips. They may secure holders better during an auto-cross or off-road adventure, but we don't use the Macan that way. Also, we don't use a GPS of any sort very often, which means that our (non-spring-loaded) Kenu gets put pack in the center console most of the time. I find the spring-loaded clips a minor irritant, and unnecessary for our use. YMMV.

Regarding those other two holders -- the cup-holder mount and the no-touch mount -- there are some good attributes. The cup-holder has a nice flexible gooseneck ... but positions the phone too low for my liking. The no-touch mount is super-easy to work with, just plop the phone in, and the weight of that brings the sides in (a bit); but that mount has a spring-loaded clip, which means you have to reach behind it, and squeeze, to remove the mount -- that's the part that I don't like. I find that awkward, and I was afraid that I'd brake a vent slot during that procedure.

So that leaves the older (non-spring-loaded) Kenu. In addition to no-springs-attached, I like it because I can put the phone at about eye level, and also because it provides a choice of two vent-slat widths. You rotate the back -- once -- to align your preferred thickness.

I'd like a drop-in mount (like the "no-touch" one) with no spring, but those don't seem to exist. So, with the older Kenu, I put the phone in the Kenu (easier with two hands), and then push the Kenu/phone combination onto a slat (having closed the air off in that vent).

Here's what that looks like, first with just the mount, and then with an iPhone 6 in a case:

BTW, I would prefer a slightly higher mount, but I won't be putting anything on our expensive leather dash; I tried that on our Camry over the years, and mounts invariably left marks.

I consider myself fairly fluent in phone mounts, and that's what I've come up with, for the Macan, for occasional and on-road use. In the realm of motorcycles, for instance, I wrote a phone-mount article for webBikeWorld two years ago that any bikers here might find useful:

https://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-phone-mounts-reviewed/

But back to cars. If your requirements are different, then certainly a different mount might be more appropriate. For us, however, I'm reasonably satisfied with the older Kenu.

I have one and you are absolutely right, in the winter it will overheat the phone.

Not trying to be a smartass here, i.e., a legitimate question: are you talking about a vent-mount holder and, if so, do you close off the vent (via the thumbwheel above it) before use? I ask because, as I noted above, we use a vent mount, and haven't had any such problems (and have the heat on in the car half of each year, mostly using the foot-oriented setting on the panel buttons).

Yes to both, I know it's no big deal, but I just don't like having to shut off a vent, lol. I originally used it in my Honda which has blowtorch hot heat, and even with the vent closed on that, it got too hot.

Okay, thanks.

Hey, we still have to get together sometime. Going to 30 Lake for dinner next Wednesday ...
I have been using a magnetic vent mount holder with my Iphone 6+ for quite sometime with good results. But I need two magnets as my phone is relatively heavy, especially given the Otterbox case I use.

I use the vent closest and to the right of the steering wheel. As Bill mentioned in the winter I turn the vent off, and I've had no issues with the phone. Sure, it's not ideal to be blocking or turning off a vent, but I have not found it to be a big deal. In fact, I have never even given it a thought in many months. I'm under the impression that the auto climate control uses mostly the floor vents to heat the car.

What's most important to me is that it keeps the phone up closer to my field of vision while driving. I definitely don't like having to look further down to see the phone screen.

Having never liked the idea of a vent mount, as it blocks airflow, I bought the Scosche MPD Magic Mount Pro Dash phone holder from Crutchfield for $24.99, shipping included. This magnetic dash mount phone holder is about 1-1/2" high and I have it mounted just off center in my '17 Honda Accord Hybrid Touring for my iPhone 6 with Otterbox. It has a swivel mount that holds tightly, so you can point it in any direction. You remove the Otterbox, place a big, thin, wide magnet on the back of the phone, re-place the Otterbox and just click it onto the dash mount phone holder.Works great horizontally or vertically. Others available from Crutchfield, but this suited me perfectly.
I have two of these; one is always on my computer bag so I can use it on rental cars wherever I go. They work very well and do not take practically any space.

Replaced Cheap Vent Mount With Better Cheap Vent Mount

Okay, I thought I'd update this particular phone thread (there are -- alas, and no doubt to the dismay of the moderators -- a lot of such threads) because I had cited the vent mount my wife and I used.

In any case, we recently replaced our Kenu vent mount -- see pics and link in post 4, above -- with this one, which we used the other day:

This Scosche mount ...

Product Musical instrument accessory Material property Technology Beige

... at about the same price, has these advantages:

 • The holder part does not have to be positioned right in front of the vent flow.
 • That plastic ring around the rubber vent insert is for stabilization, and seems to work as intended.
 • There are (friction-based) rotation points by both the phone holder and the vent, to facilitate positioning it, e.g.:

Vehicle Car Luxury vehicle Center console Vehicle audio

Again, let me note that we use a phone holder only occasionally. If you prefer a more permanent sort of mount, there may be better choices, such as the one from Rennslist and others.

Also note that Scosche has a lot of other mounts, including one like the above with Qi charging, and on and on. See Truck and Car Accessories

In any case, for those interested in light-duty use, this is our new favorite. YMMV.

So I changed to get away from the heat problem using the vent approach:
Cheap and does the job.

That looks reasonable.

It won't work for me, however, because of a full-leather dash (and I don't want anything stuck to the windshield, to cut down on the view).
