2022 Macan S, Dilemma with Fast-Coming Lock Date

8477 Views 60 Replies 29 Participants Last post by  rgranger
Hello everyone,

SHORT STORY: (1) After engine break-in, will the 2022 Macan S w/ Sport Exhaust sound even remotely similar to a 2018 Macan GTS? (2) "full leather interior w/ standard exhaust" or "standard interior w/ Sport Exhaust?" (3) any general build critiques?

LONG STORY: A dealership I went into happened to have one of the last few allocations available for a 2022 Macan S for delivery in late August or early September. I immediately put a deposit down to secure my spot, and it locks in 5 days. Since the configurator only shows MY23 now, this is my MY22 build below (as made with the dealer's internal configurator):

95BBV1Macan S$65,400
0QWhite$0
VKLeather Interior in Black$3,630
0NADelete Model Designation$0
1BKAdaptive Air Suspension incl. PASM$1,390
1D6Trailer Hitch without Tow Ball$660
3S5Roof Rails in High Gloss Black$410
5TEInterior Trim in Brushed Aluminum$0
6FJSportDesign Exterior Mirror Lower Trims and Base in High Gloss Black$0
8T3Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)$990
KA6Surround View$1,200
QJ4Window Trim in High Gloss Black$240
PU2Premium Package Plus$4,790
Destination Fee$1,350
Grand Total$80,060

The MY23 equivalent of this build is as follows: PPAKT7N8 (for visual reference)

My absolute constraint is $80,000 of which I barely managed to meet. I am debating between the Leather Interior and the Sport Exhaust System. The dealer had various 2022 base models with the 3 levels of leather (side note: was surprised to see base w/ full leather!), but there were no 2022 S/GTS models at all. They did have a "performance-loaded" 2018 GTS I was able to test drive (another side note: wow that air suspension; were it not for the exhaust, I would never have guessed I was going 90!). After engine break-in, is this a similar exhaust note to what the 2022 S will be making?

I also read somewhere, either here or Rennlist, that the 2022 standard exhaust is mechanically the same as the optional Sport Exhaust System except for the console toggle and an inactive valve. Is this correct? If this is correct, this might swing me to the leather camp entirely.

Serious responses sincerely appreciated!

Notes: I used the search function and saw a similar debate for an older model and a more recent discussion but only regarding the exhaust system itself. Lastly, if it matters at all, I am coming from a lease-end 2020 GLC300. This Macan will be my first long-term, non-lease purchase and will be my new daily driver. I am based in Silicon Valley.

Thank you for your time,
jbdelac

Looks great!! Only other suggestion would be to select white gauge face - the OEM dark face is almost unreadable in the daylight hours.
BTW, my SA confirmed on the test drive that optioning ParkAssist gives you extra sensors which widens the radar coverage over where the bumpers meet the wheel wells. For discussion's sake, let's say standard sensors are 120 degress, whereas ParkAssist is 180 degrees (hope that makes sense). I thought to mention this in case it sways your thoughts (SA mentioned same to me, but I know I want the cameras).
The extra sensors are appealing but I could only order Park Assist if I also ordered the PSE as the lack of symmetry of the centre console buttons would do my head in. Sad isn’t it.

That scares me. Pushing the boundaries for an SUV. Be sure to get some info about maintenance . . . I just replaced a headlight . . . about $3,500. PDK service every 40,000. . . . .just saying . . . know before you go.

Do you NEED that tow hitch ?
I love my trailer hitch but I have a bike on the car about 3 or 4 times a month. If you are going to put one on, there are reasons to have the factory do it. If you are not going to use it . . there are options to add it later. Roof rails CAN NOT be added later. If you are a kayaker or skier . . . maybe.

I agree... it's about the only thing I regret not optioning on our GTS. I thought at the time it was just "bling" but it really would be a functional addition.
I'll agree with everyone who says PSE on the 2.9L engines isn't worth it. I have it on my '21 GTS and would not pay extra for it. It gives you some pops and crackles but I think the engine sounds better with it turned off.
Not criticizing here. It just shows that all of these choices are very personal... I would not give up the PSE... love the sound. It makes me smile every time I drive the car. :)
Build locked :D

Thanks to everyone that chimed in! I read through everything! I note that my build is 2k more than the 22GTS base price, but it won't have the options that I want, and there are definitely no 22GTS allocations left (at least at my dealer).

I actually was going to order a 23S 5 days ago, but the dealer surprised me with available 22S allocation. I jumped on that and now here we are!

95BBV1Macan S$65,400
0QWhite$0
VYLeather Interior in Black/Bordeaux Red$3,880
0NADelete Model Designation$0
1BKAdaptive Air Suspension incl. PASM$1,390
2PJHeated GT Sport Steering Wheel in Leather$590

Gotta love the Porsche ordering journey. You'll be happy with a leather interior. But unless you're planning on using them, I would ditch the roof rails. They serve no purpose unless you plan on putting something on top of the car. I went without and it looks more like a car than an SUV. I did option the hitch because I have a bike rack I plan on using. It's not a great look but it's not horrible and I WILL use it. And unless you drive in the city and have parking issues, the surround view is something you could do without. I thought I wanted (needed) it but I don't have it and don't miss it. The crests are a head scratcher too. You probably wouldn't notice them on a regular basis and say how much you love them. Delete that, surround and the rails and you're back to being close to on budget. You'll have a great car no matter what you do.

I just picked up my S today and I am sold on the sport exhaust. I traded my 2018 S. The 2018 sounded awesome on start up and okay while driving with the little burb between gears. The exhaust while in sport mode on the 22 S is awesome throughout. I’m glad I got the option. It rumbles a bit here and there and even sounds great while idling. It’s a very classy sound.
Also I selected the leather option, not the full leather but the one that was ~$1300. It gives you leather on the dash, armrests, storage compartment and I’m not sure what else but I really like it on the dash over the standard package.
Just my opinion. Good luck and please ask me any other questions cause my new 22 S is right here.

What makes the black dials hard to see? Is it a specific lighting condition like when the sun is behind the car or is it just generally hard to see? I think I would be okay if it's the former.

I test drove various 2022 Macans in the morning (9-10AM) and in the afternoon (4-5PM) the past week and the black dials seemed fine, though I admit I was not paying special attention to their dials.

I swore I would stay off forums to avoid this type of curiosity but here I am...

Black dials are OK in the daylight if you have the headlights on so that the instrument backlighting is on. Otherwise I found them very difficult to see in any daytime lighting. If you get a chance sit in the car during the daylight and focus on the dials...but then again maybe it's my eyes. Anyway based on my experience I configured white dials in my newest order,

I agree. Admittedly, I don't have a 20 year old's eyes, but I would have optioned the white or mojave dials if I had been experienced driving with the black. It's not that they are unusable, it is just a contrast issue that I find a bit annoying. As jeffbtx said, sit in the car if you can and form your own opinion.

I thought I would want the white dials (and white on the clock/stopwatch). But I didn’t see that much bang for the buck doing that option. The only thing that I watch on the dash is the speed (digital) and the gas level and they’re not hard to see. If you do change color, only the center and left dial change. The right one is a display. The symmetry is off for me as well. It was $1100 dollars I put to good use elsewhere. ymmv.

Another ride in our stable is an '04 WRX STI Subaru. It has orange lighting in the gauges. When turned up it is impossible not to read exactly how fast you were going when the blue lights enter your rearview mirror.
A blessing and a curse: SA notified me my lock was this Friday not last Friday. I changed to carbon fiber trim because of this thread: Garnet Red / CF Interior (specifically this Flickr album therein).

I put this thing together to track my changes and to propose modifications to myself. My current build is marked as such. I know I'm probably going to modify it at least one more time before it officially locks because I will inevitably find some random person with a random thread praising some random option.

Nothing but praise for my SA: he has been nothing short of wonderful with the patience of a saint.

Be aware that typically Porsche locks builds a few days before the estimated date your SA sees in the system. So if you make another change on say Wednesday, your SA might log in to then discover it is too late.

Seems like there's a disproportionately high number of MA based members in here! (Myself included.)

Clear taillights look good on white. Wonder how they'd look on Night Blue...

To the OP, your spec looks awesome. I wish my car had the sport exhaust, although I've heard both positive and negative reviews on 2019+ with PSE vs. the older 3.0 twin turbo engine.

I am happy for you. Now the wait🙄. Worth it though.
In my opinion, you received something(VIN) extremely valuable. A check of the vehicle identification number (VIN) is absolutely necessary if you're considering buying a car as well. After checking the vehicle identification number (VIN), any differences indicate a suspicious feature. If that is the case, you should walk away from the deal. You can follow a vehicle shipment by VIN using a secure application, website, or SMS association rather than relying on contradictory driver correspondence and insufficient data. That's a fantastic business. Additionally, the best vehicle delivery companies promote it for this reason.
