Default Rear hatch rubs paint off top of car??

Hello everyone,

New Macan S owner here. Bought my wife a 2018 Macan S last week and just a couple days ago we notice a popping sound when opening and closing the rear hatch. We first thought it may have been the struts. However, upon closer inspection there is one area that is rubbing the top of the car as if there is not enough clearance between the two areas and the paint is coming off in a couple spots. Im taking to the dealer Monday, but curious if anyone else has had, seen or heard of this issue before? Please see attached photo of the paint. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello there. Indeed, that’s not normal. I hope the dealer will fix it for you.

Is that the vertical seam on the L or R of the rear hatch?

Let us know what the dealer says/does.

Really seems like a misalignment, factory defect.

It is not the vertical seam. It's on top of the car. Taking it in tomorrow to see what they will need to do to fix and repair the paint.

Looks like the top rear portion of the rear hatch is not aligned properly, causing the friction damage to the paint and the popping sound of the hatch rubbing the roof until it closes shut. Your picture shows the spacing between the hatch and the roof to be wider at the top and narrower at the bottom. If you bought the Macan as a used vehicle, you may want to check if the rear hatch was ever repaired or damaged because that would explain the misalignment. Doubt it had this problem from the factory. It would take several openings and closings of the hatch for the paint to wear off. Luckily the paint damage is in an area that is not noticeable because it is on the top of the hatch along the roofline. I would not have the entire hatch repainted for those rub marks. Touch up paint would be my choice.
Good luck with tomorrows visit. Keep us posted!

Thanks for your reply and comment. We bought the car new with less than 100 miles on it so definitely no wrecks that were repaired. I don't think I would have to have the entire back hatch repainted as I think the little top part on top of the rear window comes off (SEE ATTACHED PHOTO)......That is what would need to be repainted I am not sure touch up paint would survive the car washes, etc. over the years. We will see what the dealer has to say tomorrow morning.

So, in your 1st photo detailing the damage the left, undamaged side is the car roof & the right, damaged side is the hatch, body colored, roof spoiler part.

If yes, than it will be an easy fix for Porsche to simply remove this part & do repair/repaint as simple body work.
However, I understand that body shops frequently do a lot of paint blending, even when the damage is only on one panel. They need to blend paint with neighboring panels.

If for some reason, you end up paying out-of-pocket for this, you can opt for the black colored spoiler and avoid having to do any type of blending.

The hatch plastic spoiler would normally be black, right? If painted by a body shop it may not have been refitted correctly and not actually be hatch adjustment.

No, that part is body-colored in America.
