Heat and noise insulating glass option - Worth it?

Do you think that this option is worth it? Especially considering it comes standard with the below. $2,500 plus LCT
"Air conditioning
Tinted heat-insulating glass all around with grey top-tint in windscreen"

Is the optioned glass Solar Attenuating Glass or something to justify.

I've read that in the Cayenne it blocks a lot more heat than noise; the latter being a negligible difference if the stereo is on.

This is another option I'm keen to get. Anything to help cool the interior here in Texas has a value. If it also helps lower the interior noise floor, great, bonus. Helps to better appreciate wide dynamic range music like classical and jazz. Those cranking Wolfmother (for my Aussie friends ;)) probably won't notice.

Also why I'm not interested in the sunroof. More greenhouse effect, more noise. And I don't have numbers to support this, but I'll bet the alcantara headliner will be slightly quieter than the simple cloth, as well.

Hot|Ice,

Why are you mentioning PDLS here? Did I miss something in the configurator that interacts between PDLS and the insulated glass option?

#13 ·
That's what the window winding buttons are for :) (wonder if kids these days know why we say "wind the windows down")

A bit of reading suggests some good tint will be more than effective enough at blocking heat. Some more reading suggests the noise difference isn't night and day either. If there was an air gap between the two layers of glass then it would be substantially more effective.

Looks like I'll give the option a miss :) (I'd rather have air suspension which I can enjoy all year-round, not just in extreme hot/cold)

Also, if the windscreen is heat/noise insulated (as on other P models) then toll road / e-tag passes need to be put in a very specific spot behind the rear view mirror otherwise they won't work

I have Rangr a Rovers version (Solar Attenuating glass on my Evoque - std in AUS) and yes you have to place tag in specific spot plus portable GPS struggle to work. Have not noticed mobile phone reception issues. It does make a huge difference especially through the front windscreen. So much cooler... Have never had a burnt bum on the leather!
Think I will have to pay for on the Macan, could not go back.

Sorry to be repetitive but it's $3.4k (gotta add LCT and stamp duty)

Maybe not relevant when comparing to other options, but quite relevant when comparing to aftermarket tint and bang/$.

There is also the noise blocking to consider which makes it an even tougher choice. It is something I want to tick but don't have ticked under my current 'ideal' config...

Maybe if it works well enough then I don't need 3-zone? :D

The description for the Macan thermal glass is:
"Sound- and heat-insulating laminated glass with enhanced
reflectivity all round. Tinted rear side windows and rear
window similar to privacy glazing."

So we can ignore the comment from one of those links where a dealer said the windscreen wasn't insulated (which conflicts with all the transponder issues anyway).

I can count only 2 or 3 people who have actually compared with/without. All the other opinions are moot as the placebo effect comes into play. Of these few, there is a noticeable difference in heat and noise but only in extreme weather, without additional tint, and without the audio system playing.

What are you thoughts on this option?

I wouldn't want to cut down on the sound of that sweet exhaust note. Reviews have all said the Macan is quiet without it so I can see spending $1000 for thicker glass. I'm hoping to read some positive feedback from someone who has had privacy glass in another Porsche.

Thanks!

I think you are referring to the heat and noise insulating glass which is something like double glazing and is a thicker glass that stops the heat and noise.

The privacy glass is the tint on the windows that is darker from the rear doors back and I would think would have a minimal impact on sound if any.

I've never had the heat / noise insulating glass so can't comment on that I'm afraid.

I have the equivalent of heat insulation glass on my ML, it does make a difference. Here is how I know:

I drove to work the ML (with heat insulation glass) and my 335d (without) on two consecutive days with about same temperatures in mid to high 90s. After about 9 hours of sitting in the sun, the ML was bearable and was able to simply get in and drive while the 335d was unbearable where I had to lower the windows and get the AC on max. Note, both cars are white.

Having said that, since I don't plan to drive my Porsche to work , I did not get this option.

Can anyone confirm if the privacy glass has UV blocking features similar to most of the higher quality tints? I've always tinted all windows as a) I prefer darker than the factory and b) for UV blocking (sun is pretty intense here), with the front driver/passenger side windows going darker to get a closer match to the rears.

TIA.

I have both and have been driving both faster and slower with temperatures around 45C.

I do not need to tint the windows. The pano shade is good enough to keep cool. The AC fan is obviously on all the time, but only at around 40-60%.

If there are no regional differences in AC systems, don't worry.

In my old M3 I used 3m Crystalline 90 on the front windshield to help block out some of the heat. I've used Huper Optik 70 in the past and for me I didn't like it because I could see the tint. With the 3m I could not tell it was there.

Thermal Insulated Glass and Toll Device

I thought I'd put this here instead of starting a new thread.

After 2+ months of ownership my travels finally took me on a toll bridge where I was able to test it out.

I placed the EZPass in the exact location described in the Macan owners manual and it worked perfectly both times I crossed the bridge.

OK not a very exciting find but hopefully it will help others feel more comfortable if they go that route.

I had added this option into my built but after driving a Macan without it decided it wasn't necessary and took it off. The one I drove had the pano roof and it wasn't hot inside and plenty quite while driving...almost too quite.

Been on this forum for a while, the general complaint is that the Macan is too quiet and can't hear the great exhaust sound. Earlier reviews of the Cayenne indicated that the noise/heat insulated glass created a little bit of haze/blur through the windows. The only windows that aren't tinted are the fronts - may be better to just get those tinted in the aftermarket which I have done with all of my cars (and will do with my Macan assuming it ever gets here :))
